Presentation of Shakti`s appearance at Kongsberg in 2023: One of jazz's supergroups and pioneers within the world music genre, are ready to celebrate their 50th anniversary with a new record and an extensive tour where they continue to plow new musical ground where the boundaries between East and West are broken down. Shakti stands for this year's opening concert at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival - the only opportunity to hear this year's big jazz comeback in Scandinavia.
In the late 1960s, John McLaughlin was on a couple of jazz's most important records, the Miles Davis records In A Silent Way og Bitches Brew. In all the years since, he has had star status. After the formidable success of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, McLaughlin met the tabla player Zakir Hussain and the violinist L. Shankar, and eventually the group Shakti emerged. The meeting between an English guitarist with a background in jazz, rock and fusion of Indian musicians with deep roots in both classical and traditional Indian music should result in a completely unique and fascinating musical amalgamation that would appeal to large audiences. This was innovative music; it was new and fresh with an immediate and positive effect on an appreciative audience, and became the origin of the genre often referred to as world music.
50 years after its inception, Shakti has been resurrected, still with McLaughlin and Hussain from the original edition. For large parts of 2023, the band will tour the world,
with only one stop in Norway and Scandinavia: at Kongsberg Jazz Festival.
