Valerie, over the years I subscribed to several "soapers". You most definitely are my very favourite! How many out there freely share their knowledge and their recipes? How many answer each comment and question? Can't think of any but you. So thank you so very much for your videos, for your willingness to help others. May God bless you, each and every day :-)

dear Patricia -- i'm overcome with this compliment; very humbling and all I can say is , glory to my Lord, as He is the one that makes a change or guides and leads me all the time - when I was doing these videos the Lord helped me to think about how I would like it or how it could would help others, and in all honesty, I make a lot of mistakes on there; I've noticed silly things I've said, and when I was saying something I would use the wrong word, when I mean't to use another word, soooooo , if these can help anyone or encourage anyone at all, that is wonderful --- and sharing formulas, well, I just don't see why not--- a couple of times I've been asked for a formula to a certain bar I make; one of them I didn't give out, but told them all the ingredients in it; not sure why, but I felt I would hang onto that one a bit longer :-); but other then that I've no problem with giving those out; it was my Lord who gave me the ideas, sooooo really they are His --- thank you ever so much, for this big encouraging kind comment, I truly appreciate it! God bless you in being so generous!

Valerie...you are such an inspiration to me. I love how casual and easy you make it all look. For me, hot process is stressful right now. Perhaps with 100 more of your videos I'll get this. The lather looks amazing and it is so kind of you to share not only your video by also recipe. You are the best, my lady and I wish you much success.

Hello Valerie, today I made my first Hot Process soap. I wanted to thank you so much for all of your videos and detailed instructions. This soap recipe is bubbly, creamy and just perfect. With all of your guidance, I have successfully achieved a Blueberry Garden Soap. Three layers of color, blueberries on top and without fail. Your the best and thank you again.

Because of your videos and help, I'm not afraid to attempt this venture so late at in life. I figured out how to print your words of wisdom for this feeble brain of mine. Thank you again for all you do. May the Lord bless you and all whom you love.

Hey Ellen and thank you ever so much. You are most welcome. The way this one cooked was a bit different because I had about 62 percent hard oils versus 38 percent soft oils, so went to real thick trace, and folded over right into Vaseline stage. Plan on doing another all natural one soon and hopefully I'll see all the stages, who knows eh?! lol

You are so calm and in control as you work your art. I have to work on that part because once I started to pot my cooked soap, I start to panic and hurry to plop whatever I;m working on into the pot. Love your style. Thanks for sharing. De'

@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello De and thank you again for such great encouraging words. I've had a few times where I've had big messes (where it volcanoed everywhere) and I felt extreme panic for sure!!! but, I do try to roll with it, and I have learned that the batter does not have to be pourable to make a great design, it just has to be manageable, and then of course I've swirled some mighty thick soap, like a ocean brine soap and still managed to get a swirl. The thing is not every time will work out perfect and then you go from there, I just truly like to have a "great for the skin" soap, high conditioning and low cleansing/stripping type of soap for the body, and I love putting a lot of good things in there too! Hope you have a great day!

I love this low temperature hot process. The marathon one goes through in normal hot process is discouraging. I can get a good design with this method without going through the hoopla.

Dear Friend - I followed your recipe almost exactly and was so pleased with the results. (omitted silk and SL) It traced quickly, despite the fact that I did not use a sb. I only spoon stirred it. It remained moist and fluid after the cook - it was perfect. Pouring it into the mold was a breeze. I used what was left in the crock pot and made a soap ball with it. Great lather! Thank you.

Hello michi and thank you for your lovely kind words and for watching. I like to save some of the amount of liquid used for my lye and add after the cook, and adding yogurt at 1Tbsp per pound of soap really helps too, the sugar water as well, it all goes along to help have a more manageable batter. Don't give up keep trying, you can do it for sure!

Hello Janet, I love soaping and I love using my soap even more, but after 6 years I still have soaps that are really just plopping them in, and when I have those, you just have to deal with it the best way you can, and if im using individual silicone molds , then I will always heat them up as I find that helps them some - but, the main thing to me and it always has been from the beginning is to make great for the skin soap! big hugs and thank you again so very much!

Valerie, sincerely sorry for your loss. You are an inspiration to many. Your nice will be remembered in the soap dedicated to her memory. I have a question about this Soap: why do you put the finished soap in the freezer/fridge? & Does it take longer to cure because of the extra liquids you add? Thank you, for all you do!
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello Hippy Nerd, thank you for watching and thank you for your very kind encouraging words, I really appreciate them. When I'm using log molds I normally put them in the freezer or fridge so they harden quicker, so I can cut quicker; you don't have to put them in there at all. But one thing it is good for is when you are using a lot of liquid, say 40% or above that, then putting in the freezer helps them not to sag in the middle. But for this formula or any formula using 38% lye liquid, I'm pretty sure you wouldnt' have to worry about it sagging in themiddle. The extra tbsps. of water and yogurt are not really that much, and if you have a fairly hard formula say at 38 or up for hardness and 138 and up for INS, there is no worry, and using 5% sodium lactate really helps that hardness too, along with the tsp of sea salt. I have found that most of my soaps are ready to be sold in 2 weeks, some in 1 weeks and I've had a couple over the years that took about 4 weeks. The other thing I found interesting is that one time I cut open a 3 month old soap and it was moist inside, not wet, not soft, but still moist and I have found that with some CP's too. A lot of milk liquid , I have found to take longer to get hard, but then again, your formula plays a big part in that as well. I read where someone did a 35% lye liquid HP and it worked great for them, but I've never tried that yet! Thank you for your question, and it is sure my pleasure to help and share if I can.

lovely channel first time watching and just subscribed, the soap even in doubt it still came out beautifully, the lather WOW! i'm kind of scared to use castor oil in soap because of the hair growth factor it has, being that i don't want body hair, i wonder if lye gets rid of those properties, what does silk do for soap?

Once you mix the lye with the oils and butters, it becomes a different product, basically a salt product, and the lye saponifies the oils and butters, so now you have soap, you just get the great properties for skin from those. I've been using castor at a high percentage for over 3 years and have never had a problem with hair growth. Silk is "supposed" to give it a more silkier feeling a glide to it, but you can also add kaolin clay to help with that, or you can use rice milk or tapioca powder. I believe the silk is not necessary at all.

Lovely, quality video and so helpful. Your camera helper and clear audio helped a great deal in learning from your work. Many thanks to you and hubby. Soap looked beautiful in the end. I tried this today, my first time doing HP. Not sure how it will turn out, but it just never (20 minutes+) seemed to reach that vaseline stage. Since it was at trace, and past, I figured proceed ahead and add extras, then put it in the mold. It looks pretty good, but tomorrow will tell it all. Any suggestions on this experience? Thanks you again for the clarity and excellent video + passing along your soaping experience. Sandy

Hello George Moertel, thank you for watching and for those very kind generous words of support! Was your crock pot hot enough? crock pots can differ in temps between models and even the same models. When soap comes to a trace, it will harden up "before" going through stages. I t should cook hot enough so that it bubbles around edges, and then eventually work through to the center. But, you can stir it up as well. Maybe the crock needs to be a higher heat. Did you cover it with plastic wrap? make sure you check your soap so that there is no lye left before using it. Some formulas will take longer to cook then others, maybe your soap just needed more time. But it should always go to Vaseline stage. Maybe you could email me with the particulars, i.e. formula, water %, add ins, what temp your lye and oils were before stick blending, what temp your crock was on etc. and that way I can see better what happened.... or if you try it again, Please do :-), then take pictures of the different stages and then if you need help I can see the pics..... You are so welcome for any help these videos give, and don't give up , keep trying and take a look at other HP soapers videos as well, Kimberley McNutt has some great ones for beginners as well. It's always good to check different ways and find the one you like the best. thank you again, big hugs

Hi Valerie: Sandy here. Tested the soap I made 1 week ago and it tested at #8 (ph scale) the day after it was made. Soap looks quite nice and I'm wondering if it did go to vaseline and my inexperience with HP didn't recognize it. If I can figure out how to shoot you some pics, will show you how it came out. Yesterday, tried a second batch. It clearly turned vaseline like. It never volcanoed and just took its time turning to vaseline, slowly folding into itself., never stirred it until completion and kept plastic wrap on the top. You may have hit the nail on the head thinking it was the crockpot. It needed to be turned to( high) to get the action going, then, it would be lowered to medium. The second batch was nice and flowing and with your instructions, it could be called a success. To me, HP seems to take more planning than CP but, it certainly has advantages, too. I make more mess with HP. Maybe, with time it will become a bit less so. Again, Valerie, your videos were the best viewed to understand the process. If it hadn't been for your easy to follow instructions, my soaps wouldn't have gotten made. Except for the rougher top it looks like Cp inside when cut... A big hug! Thanks.. Sandy

Hey there Sandy, your post makes me so very happy; sometimes it takes a bit just to get to the exact place/stage. You don't have to volcano to get Vaseline stage by any means, and truly letting it roll over on itself until it's all Vaseline is a great way to do it. I still use that way once in awhile, so nothing wrong with that at all. Crockpots work differently and i'm glad you got it to work for you, sounds to me like your a fast learner for sure! I'm also thrilled that these videos have helped in any way at all, and you can always email me at : valeriemosher@ns.sympatico.ca by the way, i'm sorry i'm just seeing this now, big hugs

Hi Valerie, I have been enjoying your wonderful videos, you are an awesome teacher! I'm new at this & have had success with several CP soaps thus far. I know that if I tried this using the colorants you used, my soap would have been a success, however I tried using some clays (mixed with water) as the colorants (all I had on hand) and the soap wound up drying & hardening rapidly. No way to attempt swirls. Plan to rebatch. I did make a small ball out of some of the soap and wow, it's absolutely amazing...it'll be a terrific rebatch soap, haha! I'm definitely going to retry this one with colorants that will hopefully work better for me. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could have used the clays & had them work out ok? Thank you and your husband for these videos, they're wonderful learning tools for those of us just starting out on this soaping adventure.

Hello Bonnie MacGlaflin - thank you for watching and thankyou ever so much for those very kind and supporting words, i'm so glad my videos can help in any way! I've used clays many times, i.e. French green clay, kaolin clay, pink clay, bentonite clay, red Moroccan clay --- I usually mix mine say 1/2 tsp to 1tsp and mix with a teeny bit of glycerin and then about 1tsp water, I let them set on my stove by my heated water so they can be lukewarm when I go to mix them --- I always heat up my containers that I will be separating soap into, and cover with plastic wrap, also heat up my spoons and swirling tool if using. You can always mix 1 tsp of hot water into your separated containers if they seem to be too thick;, and you can also have a spray bottle with warm water in it and a couple of sprays on top when layering soap, but not too much. Remember just to cook until Vaseline stage and make sure that all the lye is used up-, then add your addtiives etc.

Hey Diane! Take your time and enjoy... I do find that HP does retain the scent better, but you can definitely SF as you please, I normally always SF some up front and then add the rest after the cook with choice oils, but you can use what you have in the soap as well. Sometimes I super fat all up front, it jus tdepends which soap i'm doing, how i'm feeling that day, lol, etc. You are so very generous and kind with those encouraging words and I humbly thank you, i'm still learning too, but hope that these can help in even a small way, big hugs

Thank you for sharing, you make great videos! How long does this soap (with all the extra added liquids) need to fully cure?
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello seashorecanadian, thank you for watching and for the kind words! This soap was done at 38% lye liquid, 5%Sodium lactate and 1 tsp of sea salt. The hardness number of the formula was 39 and the INS was 140. This soap is ready to use immediately and this particular formula would be good to sell in a week, but I like to keep them 2 weeks. Adding the 2 tbsp. of water with the sugar, the 2 tbsp. yogurt and 1 tbsp. maple syrup does not really add enough liquid with those particular numbers to make a longer waiting time, especially using 5% sodium lactate, SL really helps with the hardness factor.

Hi Valerie, I love your soap! I want to try your recipe, I like how fluid and creamy the batter turned out. I made HP soap the other day (someone else's recipe) Mine didn't look like hers at all,her's was creamy and loose like yours. Mine was yellowish tan, nothing white about it at all, more like dark vaseline. I colored it. turned out alright, thanks for the tip to loosen the batter by adding 1 tsp warm water. I cooked the batter on high, switched to low, off and on. That was my 2nd attempt at HP. What do you suppose happened, got it to hot? Thanks!!
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hey craftyladydi! thank you for watching and thank you for such generous kind words! :-) I'm not sure what would have caused that, I would need to know the formula, what your ingredients were, what were your add ins etc. For me soap can turn tan when using goats milk and buttermilk, or different types of teas...sometimes the type of butters or oils may cause it...definitely high heat with sugar and milk with sugar in it, will give you a tan color, but even cooking on low can give you a tan color as well. Please, for sure try out the formula and not all of my formulas are loose by any means, but I do like to try to get them manageable! You are more then welcome for any help or tips! Hey, forgot to say, let me know how it goes when you try the above formula, would love to know.

@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello Candy Baker and thank you for your kind words and for watching. I would encourage you to take your time and have fun and be safe. If I can do this, anyone can, we all start at the beginning for sure. I've been soaping around 3 1/2 years, and I'm still learning every day. The reason I put my log soaps in the freezer is so that they will harden quicker, and I can cut faster. You don't have to put them in the freezer or fridge, you can just let them set out and cut them the next day if you like. It won't hurt anything to leave them set out, the milk and yogurt will all have become part of the soap now, and once your oils/butters are all saponified it becomes , basically, a salt product, soap!

Hi Valerie, I made this last night and it seems to have come out very well although I am waiting for the cut to make final judgment. One question: When adding SL and AVJ to lye solution, is there any advantage to waiting until solution is less than 112 F or that’s just the way it turned out when you did it in video? Sometimes you add SL before the cook and sometimes after. Why? Again, love you videos and thanks for answering!
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 5 лет назад
So glad you tried this and that it is working out for you... great questions about SL and the AVJ --- I have been experimenting with when I add certain things in HP, this one happened to have it added to the lye liquid as I was doing low temp, and I was in the testing stage (and probably always will be in some sort of testing stage, hahaaa, as I hope to always be learning something new eh?! ) But, now when doing HP I will probably always add the SL after the cook, AVJ , I do add to lye liquid and as well I will add after cook, or mix with the sugar I add, so that is just personal preference --- I had read an article about 4 years ago where a doctor said that AVJ will not lose it's properties in high heat...sooooo, to me it doesn't matter, and there will be discussion on what lye kills and what it doesn't , but I do know that with certain teas mixed with lye it does come through because of properties in my shampoo bars....you will find and can find by not looking to long, debates on everything i'm sure, sometimes it is just personal preference and what people have experienced...so I try to encourage others to do what they feel is the best, right now for me, I have found that the SL is working better for me in HP, after the cook ---- and ask any question you like, im not sure i'll be able to answer them all, but if not, i'll try and find the answer for you too! you are very welcome for any help I may be able to give!

@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello and thank you for watching and for your lovely kind words! If anything can help from any of these videos, it makes me very happy and you are most welcome! If i'm mixing micas I will normally use water to mix them with and sometimes a tiny bit of glycerin, if it is oxides I will normally use a tiny bit of glycerin first then a tiny bit of water. Too much glycerin can cause glycerin rivers even in HP, so I try to be careful with that for mixing colors.

I made soap according to your recipe, only I do not have an aloe gel, I replaced it simply with water. Made in a stainless steel saucepan to go through the Vaseline stage, place the soap in the oven at 70 degrees Celsius. Then just the pan stood in hot water (so that the mass did not cool down). Everything turned out just fine! The swirls are made. When the soap cools, I can show you the photos! Thank you very much for your lesson! You helped me a lot!!!

Hello Lisa and thank you so much for watching and your kind words of support. Once HP is cooked, all the lye should be gone from it and it is ready to use right away. How long it takes to get hard enough to sell, does depend on the formula and the type of soap it is etc. But 90% of the time my soap is ready to sell in 2 weeks , sometimes 1 week, and on rare occasion 4 weeks.

Hello all well? Could you help me with the hot process? I can not get the temperatures right, and could you tell me if this clay pot is plugged into the electric current? How to cook only with the heat of the formula. Thanks. Neila Martins.
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello Neila and thank you for watching. For this particular formula by the time I combined the lye liquid with my oils, the lye liquid was at 108F and my oils were at 135F. In "low" temperature hot process, I do like my lye liquid to be around 125F and my oils around that as well. Because this is low temperature hot process I had my crockpot plugged in and was cooking with the crock on low temp. Whether you have your crock on low or warm or high will depend on the temperature your crock pot will keep the heat you want. As far as cooking with only the heat of the formula, that is "high" temperature hot process and I have videos of that on line as well, one in a glass bowl and one in a crock, but either removed from the element or left in but turned off and how you do that will depend on what the temperatures were of your oils and lyes when you started...... but this particular video is not high temp, but low temp. You can click on the "Show More" text below the video to get the formula and a description of what I did. Thank you for your questions.

Hello Gail Menne and thank you for watching and your kind words. This particular formula was done at 38% lye liquid, and even though I did not discount the yogurt, sugar liquid (1-2Tbsp wtr) or sodium lactate, there was absolutely "no" warping in these bars. If I had done 40% lye liquid, it's possible there would have been. I have found warping depends on the formula as well as how much liquid you use. In all the soaps I have made over the last years, I've had maybe 3-4 that have warped , and that is explainable because of the formula and liquid amount for sure. So I would say "at least" 95% of my soaps "do not" warp. Great question, thank you and thank you for watching.

Since the yogurt wasn’t part of the saponification process won’t it spoil quickly in the soap? It’s just been suspended into the other molecules, not chemically changed

Hi , I really really live yr videos , i haven't seen anybody humble and open hearted more then u...xxx I learn alot from yr videos .. Pl pl keep it up have a question if u cud answer pl ...Can we add lye direct o solid oils and mix our liquid into soft oils ? I wonder in this way we can safe the properties of our liquid (milk , aloe vera jel etc) xxx

Hello and thank you for watching and for such kind generous words, I appreciate them. Lye cannot be added to oils, it has to be added to a liquid where it can dissolve, and it will not dissolve in oil. Tea, water, milks etc, but not oils. But you can use just enough liqud for your lye, for example say your lye amount was 4 ounces you could use at least 4 ounces (not less) I would use 5 ounces of water etc and then use the rest of the liquid amount after the cook if you like. But I have read that properties of aloe vera are not lost in the cook or with lye.

Love your recipe and videos, will be making this today but not sure what you used to colour green, is it mica? What did you use for white colour, more white clay or titanium dioxide or mica? Thanks again

Hello Jenni Kelly and thank you for watching and so glad you enjoy them. For that green I used a Chromium green oxide, but wished I had used a mica or natural botanical , like spinach instead. and for the white I used TD water soluble. You are most welcome for sure!

Hi Valerie, thanks for your informative videos. One question, should I test the temp before adding my EO/FO ? If so what temperature should the soap batter be. Thanks again
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello Nancy McGaw and thank you for watching. I do not take a temp before adding my EO/FO. There are small debates on this...but , from what I've read the flashpoint is the temperature at which a fragrance can combust if exposed to open flame or spark; so you can add your EO/FO when you like and mix in and it will stick and not burn off. Although mine don't usually get added until they are around 175-185F, and probably sometimes around 165F.

It's okay to only cook it for 20 minutes? I watched other hp soap videos and they cooked there's for three hours
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello kim nguyen, thank you for watching. What you want to make sure of in HP is that your soap is at "Vaseline" stage and that the PH is good OR no zap. So , in my opinion there is absolutely no need whatsoever to cook for 3 hours.... unless there were issues with the soap etc. I've never done that, not even when I first started soaping. HP soap needs to go through stages, and sometimes not all the stages will happen , as that can depend on your formula and your temperature and your crock pot etc. But the final stage is the "Vaseline" stage, and that would be where "all" the lye has saponified your oils/butters and it is now "soap". But to be sure you should always check the PH (should be around 10) OR there should be NO Zap.

Hello Cynthia and thank you so much for the kind words and for stopping by ---- i dont always put it in the fridge or freezer, but when i'm real busy, i'll do that so i can take it out of the mold sooner, cut sooner, and dry sooner...that way if i'm making more soap i can just continue with that particular mold etc.... for sure, it is not necessary. thank you for the question!

Hello i am sorry i am late asking questions but I am just seeing your video's which are great. I have a question on how due you check for the zap or when you you know that the soap is cooked. I cooked my soap until it is translucent, am I cooking it too long. I see some HP soap makers cook their soap until translucent but yours does not look fully clear. I never thought that I could swirl HP until seeing your videos. I am loving them. thank you

Hello Valerie, thank you very much for sharing this, very helpful. Question, is the total cooking time 21 minutes or the slow cooker was already on when you were blending? Do we not need to test the soap to make sure it is cooked as I am new to this? My last question is the curing time. Thank you again
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907

Hello Felly Mounga, thank you for stopping by, your kind words and your questions! How long you cook a formula will depend on the formula, the heat of the oils and lye, and the heat of your crockpot, and the amount of liquid etc. But this formula cooked on low heat for about 20-25 minutes and yes, the crock pot was on low by the time I added the lye as I heat my oils up in the crock pot... I do always always test my soap even now after 6 years, and now I usually tongue zap to see if any lye is left, but you can get to know your soap really well after awhile, but I still test...when your soap reaches Vaseline stage, then your soap is cooked, but you could always have measured wrong or forgot to add oils etc, so therefore it is good to always check to make sure there is no lye left. For Hot process, I usually let mine set for 2 weeks althought they are ready to use when no lye left, but 2 weeks gives them time to dry and harden up more.

Thank you for your reply. Your soap looks great but too advanced for me right now. I have made it twice and both times my soap has a discoloration could you tell me what causes that? Thank you so much for your reply.
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 7 лет назад
Hello Kim, when you say a discoloration do you mean when it is cooking? or after it sets for 2 weeks? Did you use "sugar free" coconut milk, and "sugar free" yogurt? Were your temps on low and did you add them in the cook or after the cook? or did you add coconut milk with the lye? Trying to think of all the things that could cause discoloration - the natural batter will not be "white" but a sort of off white because of the oils/butters used. You could still do this method and just use a 3 oil formula with no xtras at all, and that way it would be not advanced at all. Hope this helps :-)
