Like a lot a folks with curls and coils, I tried the no-shampoo Curly Girl Method. Unfortunately it wasn't right for me, and I returned to using a more tradiitonal shampoo.

So glad to hear your opinion here. I agree, the curly girl method is so time consuming and uses such a large amount of products. And btw, I think your hair looks gorgeous!

I love your handle, Senseofwonder. 🤩thanks for the kind words! I agree about the volume of products required by that method, too.

Hi, Beth! I watched your video mainly cause I was curious as to why you quit the curly girl method. You do have valid reasons (and glad to see it wasn't the bashing I see on some channels). I do still use it and it's working for me, but my hair seems to be very different and much curlier than yours, so that may make a difference. I don't find I use a lot of product, as some of your commenters said and I don't find it super time consuming (what's time consuming is how long it takes my mess of curls to dry). I've experimented with a lot of their products but narrowed down my routine to just a few products. Always looking for new ideas though.

Hi! 👋 Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I definitely didn’t want to bash anyone. I think it’s good to try new methods to see what works and what doesn’t. It turns out I just need to shampoo more often. I’m so glad it works for your curls 💗

I too have curly, coarse hair, and have assumed my hair is dry since I remember so I always use super conditioning shampoos and thick heavy conditioners and masks. Your hair is gorgeous and I love it that you wear it long. I use L'Oreal purple shampoo. The pigment in it is so strong it is crazy. I wash and quickly rinse it off because I'm afraid my hair would turn purple. LOL. Hope you are having a great week.

Thank you for these videos. They have really helped me enjoy my natural colour coming in and the freedom from hair dye. I am in agreement about sulfate shampoo. I have fine hair in transition to my natural colour and I need that clean scalp. I used to wash and condition my hair everyday when I was in my 30s but now it is down to twice a week. For my natural hair colour transition, I use a DIY colour correcting conditioner on my ends only instead of a purple shampoo. I have tried purple shampoo but find it is too harsh on my fine hair. My DIY recipe for purple conditioner is using any conditioner and adding Manic Panic Ultraviolet semi-permanent dye. A little goes a long way since I use it with every hair washing cycle.

I love that you are going to grow your hair long, at least I’m assuming you will. I’m growing my curly, graying hair long too - never died it or chemically treated it. So.....I’m enjoying this journey. Though I did use the curly girl method for awhile, I found that it did not work for me. I’m a swimmer and a recreational triathlete - and I have 3a,b and c curly hair. I am very careful with sulfates, but because I put a little coconut oil on my hair to coat and protect it from my 3000+ meters daily swim (the chlorine is brutal) I find I still need to use the sulfates to thoroughly get my hair clean. I enjoy viewing your videos and have loved watching your journey. You look gorgeous! Isn’t it amazing how the gray hair, when taken care of with upkeep and flattering hairstyles - regardless of length - makes us look younger? It really does! Thank you for being a wonderful example to all of us. Your hair is beautiful.

Hi, Kim! Yes, I’m going to grow it long after my final chop. I love that you’re taking such good care of your hair and still swimming. I love swimming laps, but I have been reluctant the last few years because of the chlorine damage. I’m going to try the coconut oil trick next time. 😍😘 thanks for the kind words. I really love this community.

Even though I am a good bit older, we are just about hair twins. The only difference seems to be that my scalp isn't oily. Right now I'm trying the Redken acid bonding shampoo & conditioner, but I want to try the cherry and almond duo you recommend. I adore that fragrance! Not to be negative about your room rearrangement, but the overhead light fixture behind you makes it look like the moon is rising out of your head. A little distracting, but not enough to make me abandon your videos, which are excellent. I love your quiet, elegant presentation style. As I mentioned I am older (65), and frankly I am tired of being shouted at or confronted with a presenter who reminds me of a yapping, bouncy chihuahua.

LOL, you’re not wrong about my light fixture 😆😫 I’ll figure it out. 😂. I used to use a Redkin product I liked but was discontinued. Thanks for the kind words. I’m like you-I’m definitely tired of being yelled at. 😘😘😘

I just found your site. Don't know when this was made. I have silver hair like yours. It was thinning and I was trying to figure out some solution like a hair piece, but I did lose about 30 pounds last year. I'm on vacation, and on looking last night, I noticed I have a lot of baby hairs art the front hairline. I may just try to work with my own. Thanks for the product recommendations. You should have a larger audience. Great video!

I’m so glad you’re here 🥰😘 how encouraging to see some new growth. I know that thinning hair is a common concern-I’m not particularly knowledgeable about how to combat it but I do know the body will shut down new hair production during times of stress. Maybe more vacations??😎

I’ll probably share my thoughts on that when I’ve had more experience with it. So far, so good. Today I used the Natasha Denona Glam palette. Have you tried it? It’s all neutrals and mostly cool-toned. Lots of pretty shimmers shades.

Hi Beth , I only wash my hair once a week or ten days , I wash with shampoo twice . If I go too long it gets itchy and sticks to my head . I don’t use sulphates 💕

I just love hearing what works for other people. My scalp is too oily to go ten days, but in the winter I can stretch it out to a whole week. 💗

I never used a "no-poo", I used a co-wash that had a mild surfactant in it. Now, I just use a sulfate free shampoo for my 2x/week wash and then a hard water shampoo once a month. I like not using so much soap in my hair. I used to think that my oily scalp needed daily washing but it really doesn't. Twice a week works good for me. And I just love using a scalp massager! I wish I'd had one of those when I was 12! I think if Massey had been more lenient about the Method, more of us would embrace that moniker. But, now I just call whatever I do "healthy wavy hair care" 😊😎.
@InfinitegardenbyBethK
@InfinitegardenbyBethK Год назад
That’s such a good point about the strict rules. I learned so much from Massey’s method that forever improved my routine, but I just want a little surfactant in the mix.

Once a month I use the Matrix Brass Off Shampoo, it has sulfates in it. I have several sulfate free shampoos that I alternate between, and one of them is the Olaplex No 4. I do a clay wash once a month with either Bentonite or Rhassoul clay. I DIY my clay washes because you can get a big container of the powder for cheap, whereas most ready to use clay wash products are unnecessarily expensive. When I straighten my hair I typically use Pureology's Hydrate line which is sulfate free.

You truly are a hair scientist 🤩 I’ve been curious about clay washes. When I was still babying my damaged dyed ends, I was worried it would be too drying. It might be okay to try now. I like the idea of switching between sulfate-free and sulfate-included.

@@InfinitegardenbyBethK Lol hair is what drew me to RU-vid in 2009. I'm still here over a decade later watching hair videos (along with a bunch of other things). So I named my channel after my obsession hair, and my profession science. I don't have a master's or PhD in the sciences, I call myself a scientist simply because I've done work in both fields throughout my career and I'm equally good at both which is rare for most people in the scientific field. In regards to my clay mix, I typically add the Lily of the Desert aloe vera gel, and distilled water, as well as a little apple cider vinegar. Some people add oils and humectant ingredients as well. Blackstrap molasses is a great additive that I use on occasion. But clay washing in general really helps the curls pop. Most of us who clay was follow it with a cowash (such as As I Am or Eden Bodyworks for example) to help remove the clay particles that get left behind.

Experience has shown me that I usually have to waste some money experimenting with products bc we dont know how the chemistry of products will shake out on our own hair. I tried the leave in Miracle conditioner (25 something (?) and so far its way too heavy on my own hair. But it might work later on down the line or just be used for overnight conditioning. I stumbled across some great generic products at Sally beauty so I keep repurchasing those for my new silver short hair. I was able to tame the coarseness finally and by christmas it should be plenty long. I should have tried this many years ago.

I know exactly what you mean about having to spend a bit to experiment. I really need to get back into a Sally-I used to love them when I was teen/college aged kid. My texture is pretty intense and I known that things that work for me won’t work for others. 😘

I tried - briefly - the conditioner only method - and I hated it. I wash my hair every day - I use mild shampoos and feel that my hair is quite healthy. Once a week I use a shampoo - like Giovanni's Tea Tree - that is a bit more cleansing.

Interesting! I haven’t settled on my favorite length. Last year in the winter I had a big cut where I went above my shoulders. I liked it but thought it was too short. When it gets long it gets very thick and heavy which can weigh my look down. I’m going to explore a new cut style this winter.
