One day will be the day I get to maybe meet him in person! I’ve learned sooo much from watching him and watching this channel. His comeback 10-3 down taught a very important lesson never give up til that 8,9,10 is down. Thanks for the tribute to one of the best !
haven't watched the video yet but i'm so glad that it was created. Shane is the GOAT and not just because of his ridiculous trophy cabinet but because of his mental resilience and ability to handle pressure. that's what separates the good from the great..
@@jeromelarson6732 If you want to see more impressive breaks by SVB and others, check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6jYtFvOUzbk.html
Efren is the greatest all around player, but I don't think he is the best eight ball, nine ball, or 10 ball player. But when you factor in all of the major games Efren is clearly the best. I think guys like SVB are a slight bit better than Efren was at nine ball. Both Efren and SVB are great ambassadors for the sport. I have met Efren numerous times in the Philippines and he is about as humble as a human can be.
At 11:16: ‘winning his second World Championship…’, hasn’t SVB only won the one World title, with the World Nine-ball last year? If you’re referring to his first title being the Dragon ‘World 14.1 Championship’ in 2019, whilst billed as a ‘World Championship’, it wasn’t sanctioned by the WPA, which ultimately lead to the demise of the tournament the year after Shane won it; the WPA threatened to revoke participants from renewing their player licenses for 2021, which proved effective, but led to the 2020 event’s cancellation, and it hasn’t resurfaced since. Having said that, just because it wasn’t a WPA-sanctioned event, unlike every other World Championship event, it doesn’t hinder Shane’s ability as a player, he’s incredible to watch, and very much a worthy world champion. It’s only a slight disagreement as to how many world titles he has to his name.
@@cakins1986 Whilst you are correct in that it wasn’t sanctioned by the WPA, that event wasn’t specifically billed a ‘World Championship’, rather an ‘International Championship’, a name which the WPA would leave alone; look at the name of the series of tournaments at the ‘International Open’, for instance. However, it does appear that the WPA caught onto the absence of an official ‘World Championship’ tournament, which the International Championship effectively held the place of at the time, fairly quickly, establishing the World Ten-ball Championship the following year.
I should have been more careful with my fact checking. Strictly speaking, this was his first "World Championship" title. I've added a "CORRECTION" to the video description and pinned comment.
Anytime a player (even a pro) makes a shot that is very low-percentage for them, it is a little lucky when it goes (even if the shot is called). I am sure Shane would agree.
I think I have already honored Efren enough with all the videos featuring him here: billiards.colostate.edu/videos/pool-shots/ and here: billiards.colostate.edu/videos/pool-matches/ Enjoy!
FYI, I retired from my university gig several years ago. All I do is pool now, but I stay busy enough already with RU-vid videos, private lessons, group courses, and website maintenance. I appreciate the vote of confidence though.
Shane actually was down 0 but managed to get 3 racks in to get his unbelievable win. Mika unfortunately somehow got amazing 10 racks but just couldn't get that 11th
Agreed. Efren is a good example of that also. They are competitive and have an unrelenting drive to win, but they are not obnoxiously arrogant or cocky in the process.
Got to love Shane, such class and humble demeanor. Very happy and impressed with everything he has done thus far. I'd love to get a chance to play some pool and speak with some of these great players who have dedicated their life to the sport🙏
He is the greatest of all time. No-one comes close in terms of changing the game with the break, sheer quantity of titles, or longevity at the very top of the sport. He doesn't have a lot of youtube-reel-friendly fancy shots because, unlike other supposed 'goats', he rarely makes positional or safety mistakes.
He is superb in terms of positioning and safety yes. Accolade wise, he stands high in that regard. But I still lean towards Efren as GOAT not because I’m a Filipino fan but just that he tends to take even the most difficult and unimaginable shots at Championship point. He takes even 1% of probability making the shot
I was just watching the tail end of the WPC this week and seeing SVB finally win it was utterly satisfying. Great tribute video to (arguably) the best American player of all time.
@@Blessed.2.Teach.4God American GOAT, but Efren still the undisputed all-around worldwide GOAT of all time. Shane has a lot of work ahead to surpass Efren, but I hope he does.
@@DrDaveBilliards It is tough to argue against Efren being goat... Shane is just literally the embodiment of pool throughout his entire being in every way, and as tough as it is find exact language to say what I'm trying to say, hopefully it still makes sense. Anyways you've been a cornerstone to our beautiful sport - God bless, Jesus love you.
Dr Dave, what is with the Colorado aversion to pool tables in bars? I live in NoCo, but can't find a table... I'm a frustrated SD Transplant who wants to play pool.....
Man, those 6 balls always causing great players to make Z shots. I always wondered if that cue ball being stuck behind the 6 like that is what reminded Shane of the famous z shot and made him think to shoot it. Just food for thought. I mean, it was almost identical. Including positions of the cue 6 and 10. Weird stuff lol
Shane is, undoubtedly, the second greatest player of all time behind Efren. If we were to make a list: 1- Efren Reyes 2- Shane Van Boening 3- Earl Strikland
Amazing reel collection. SBV is one of the most consistent players I came across... Also I think you meant Albin Ouschan as in the vid at @10:53 , unless it was just a video over your caption. Cheers
I was watching his match against Albin for the World 9-Ball title earlier today. Once he pulled away at 6-6, it was just a complete master Class. Absolutely my favourite player to watch
I think new tribute video for Fedor Gorst should be done. He has been master of table at DCC 2022 and 2023, which is a great accomplishment for such a young guy.
Agreed. His performance the last few years has been extremely impressive. If he keeps this up for a while, a tribute video will certainly be forthcoming.
I am sure he would agree with me. Anytime anybody makes a really low-percentage shot, some “luck” is involved. But the better you are the luckier you get.
It's not all that meaningful to compare athletes across generations but I can't help think of Bata vs. SVB. Bata grew up dirt poor in a third world country where he had to drop out of school to go to work. Slept on pool tables at night at his uncle's hall to supplement his family's earnings. Hustled and gambled and honed his craft mostly on his own. He went on to become one of the GOATs of the game, and inspired many of his countrymen to take up the sport. And inspired and awed many across the world. SVB didn't exactly come off a royal blood line but he at least grew up well in the US and must have had access to good coaches, leagues and tournaments and a whole pool ecosystem as he grew up which helped him get better and better with time. He's now one of the GOATs of the game. I feel Efren's game is different because of the artistry and magic he brought to his game. His precision kicks and banks made my jaw drop open back in the 90s when I first saw him on ESPN. SVB, OTOH, is very precise and calculated and almost mathematical. His shots don't always seem to show the artistry and creativity that Efren brought to the sport. Each a great, awe inspiring, and inspiring player in his own way! A nice tribute to SVB. As always, thanks for all your contributions towards the sport in your own way!
… in 9-ball, but Efren is still the undisputed all-around GOAT. See my Efren Tribute video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RQQtDIwCFvw.html
@@kerrmoney I'm not sure what you mean. If you are suggesting Earl was a better all-around player than Efren (in all games), I think most of the pool world would disagree with you (including me).
SVB is my favorite player. He does EVERYTHING really well. He is humble, not overly cocky and arrogant like Filler and Shaw, just seems like a good guy. When guys get to that level there is no doubt there is a born ability to be good at this game. I could practice 10 hours a day, practice everything the right way, have the best coaches - and not come close to SVB and others.
Sorry, but I don't know anything about them. I'm not really a "cue guy." I like what I use and don't like experimenting and changing unless there is a compelling reason.
@@DrDaveBilliards I was watching your carbon vs carbon I didn’t know so I thought I’d leave a comment on a newer video to see response thanks for feedback
… even if you pocket a really “low percentage” shot that you would miss the majority of times? I certainly consider myself a little lucky when I pocket a shot I would typically make only 1 in 10 or 1 in 100.
I would like to do similar videos for many of the greats. If I do, Efren would probably be next. I would prefer to do players for which there is lots of good video available online, preferably some recent video.
I really think SVB is in the conversation for the GOAT. I've said that to a few ppl and was laughed at. If you look at 2010s, he was player of the decade. Idr the exact numbers, but he won around 50 tournaments. Next closest professional? Orcollo, around 20. I love Efren, such a sensational player. Changed the game with his kicking. But SVB changed the game with his break. They're neck and neck in my eyes.
Shane's a good player but he's not the conversation for the goat I can name 10 players now that we're better Earl Strickland as far as tournament 9-ball was the goat efren it's definitely better all-around player Buddy Hall at his best would have killed Shane in money game in fact Bustamante would have drilled him at his best so let's not get carried away.
@@richardcerritelli9657 no way. I am a huge Strickland fan, still am. But SVB is as good, or better of a 10 and 9 ball player as Strickland. SVB just doesn't it differently. And if you are naming 10 players that are better overall than SVB then you are a bit delusional. The guy is just an insanely good player.
@@jamesdavis8731 buddy hall at his best would have destroyed Shane in a money private game at his best in 9 ball. Don't get carried away with Shane people in the moment have a habit of doing that in fact of the nine-ball game I thought Luther Lassiter was even better we're not talking about 10 ball I'm talking about 9 ball 10 ball wasn't played much back in those days. But as far as tournament Players in 9 ball Earl Strickland was better than Shane I totally disagree with you.
@@richardcerritelli9657 You can't quantify how good a gambler was. For pool, we can only base it on tournaments won, and their skills on the table. Due to the era, SVB has way more videos to compare than Buddy. Those facts alone, Buddy isn't in the conversation. But let's talk skills. If you're talking gambling on a 7ft table, Shane is the king of the 7 footer. So it's a 9ft table then. Shane's break alone, he'd have to give Buddy a spot. Enough said right there. But then you add his jumping ability, and sheer offensive firepower, it's not close. You say Buddy is better at gambling. Is there anything else he's better at than Shane? I say no. Modern game is played on 4.25in pockets, or tighter. Need I continue?
@@jamesdavis8731 efren overall better player at his best when I say better player I'm talking about all the games Harold worst definitely better player at his best I am not a SVB hater I'm just stating facts you say better play without knowing what you're talkin about you probably don't know who Harold worst is I will tell you he could be the greatest player who ever lived just know what you're talkin about and don't be in the moment do some research on Harold worst.
If SVB continues his dominance in 9-ball, he would definitely be considered the 9-ball GOAT. However, Efren is still the overall GOAT (for now). For the reasons why, see my "EFREN 'Bata' 'The Magician' REYES TRIBUTE" video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RQQtDIwCFvw.html
@@DrDaveBilliards Yea, I've seen a LOT of Reyes. Just the difference in cueball control. Reyes is top 3, at least, of all time. May have the best shots of all time. But to me, SVB, just my opinion. SVB clearly has amazing shots of his own, and we don't even know if he is at his prime yet. Calling Reyes best of all time is perfectly acceptable, I love watching that guy play.
Hope you have the chance to invite him back to make a video breaking down his 10 ball break as you've previously done on his 9 ball. It is a work of magic which I've personally been trying to replicate for the past 3 years
@@DrDaveBilliards Dude... That was top drawer. Not just from Shane. It would be very popular if you did other players too I think. Especially some of the American guys - like Skylar and Corey - Inc stuff from non matchroom events. For many fans around the world most of what we've seen is the matchroom stuff
@@DrDaveBilliards You’re Welcome! Fun Fact; Aramith Black pool balls are long-lasting and durable. The color combinations of the Aramith Black pool ball look great, doesn’t it?
@@mosesng6050 I honestly don't like any of the non-standard color combinations. People (like me) expect the 4-ball to be purple and the 5-ball to be orange. The standard colors were chosen for a reason: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/ball/colors/
I have already honored Efren quite a bit over the years, featuring him in several videos here: billiards.colostate.edu/videos/pool-matches/ and here: billiards.colostate.edu/videos/pool-shots/ but maybe it is time for another.
@@DrDaveBilliards, I know. I have watched them all. But going so deep (as of today last 4), in DCC 2023 1PKT at the age 68 is great. That's why I asked
6:54 is not a lucky shot. It's an intuitive shot played with speed to reorder the game. It's called a reset, and it's not luck. You need to be careful when you say a shot is lucky. There is also a certain flow that happens when players are on a roll, when everything they touch goes in. That's not luck but inspiration.
@@DrDaveBilliards Do you think pool players always have a clue where the white ball is going? Sometimes you play with feel, and that can't always be categorized as luck. Anyway, I don't want to nitpick at your videos. Thanks for the content.
@@exhainca I get your point, but it is tough to have a feel for where the CB is going with a thin hit (where pocket cheat makes a huge difference in CB direction), and where the CB is flying around the table hitting many other balls. You're welcome.
