Mary Weiss was ADORABLE! The Shangri-La's we're guests on tbe "Lloyd Thaxton Show", a really cool dance show on every weekday in Los Angeles in the '60's. The host was clearly overwhelmed by her. At the end of the interview, he put his arms around her, and told the cameraman to get off them, and go to a commercial. Kidding, of course. But I think if she'd have given him her number, I think he'd have taken it...
That's Ian Witcomb, British performer, producer, and all-around scenester from the early '60s. He'd already performed his hit, "You Turn Me On." He's being a good sport here, as was expected of all performers on this show.

Four months earlier on December 26th, 1964 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #18 and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100... Between 1964 and 1966 the group had eleven Top 100 records, with them of them reaching the Top 10 and one peaking at #1 {"Leader of the Pack" for 1 week in 1964}... R.I.P. I don't think in this video they're lipsynching. The tempo on this one is much faster than when they did the same song earlier in their other performance on Shindig. & Shindig was knowng to be almost all live singing. The music was pre-recorded a day or two before the show. Goal was not to be a copy of American Bandstand where everything was fake. When the show was released on DVD this info was shared for the first time.
maybe, but i don't see a mic dangling from the sky over Mary, and the vocals are steady as she moves about. it may've been recorded for the show before hand, with a live mic for Mary Ann (Margie?) (or a prop mic)
Producer/manager Shadow Morton once said of Mary, "She's the hardest working 15 year-old in show business." But he was impressed with the work ethic of all the girls.
I wanted to be a Shangri-La. I STILL love those clothes! But,at my age, well......I look good, but not good enough to wear a fringe top or white go-go boots.
@gemmagirlxoxo Exactly!! You and all these great people know better. It's only natural we'd want to share what has given such joy and get ticked off at the hollow crap that takes it's immortal place. We'd better teach the children well.
It's a shame they hadn't better advice around them, after a few hits they could've muscled in on their act a little, at least laid more claim, that would've stopped all the mess down the line
Why is it only 3 of them are featured, not just in this clip but single sleeves and publicity photos from back then? BTW I understand one of the twins died of drug overdose in the '70's or '80's.
Imagine waiting 7 years for an answer. Anyway, 10 years now, Betty Weiss had a daughter in 1964, and didnt like being on stage anyway, she was more a studio performer.

@@DzaVideo I have to disagree. It's definitely a different music track from the studio version, but there's no way Mary and the Ganser twin who doesn't have a mic could have been picked up, even with an overhead mic. In the spoken sections, each Ganser twin's voice is of equal strength, even though only one of them is close to a mic. If the one mic is live, it's possible that Mary was singing along with a vocal she recorded earlier, so you would hear her faintly echoing her previously recorded singing. Her vocal has the double-tracked effect you heard on most Shangri-las records. In short, not "100% live," but a hybrid at best.
