Shanks: The Sage Of One Piece 

I think another great part of his character is his willingness to not only tolerate the younger generation, but to actively encourage and be willing to step aside to their growing importance and power.

This video made me fall in love with Shanks all over again. What exceptional writing from Oda. Also incredible is the fact that in this 12 minute video, you basically covered all the screen time of Shanks since Chapter 1... like pretty much ALL of his dialogue and presence. 12 minutes, over a span of 25 YEARS. It's like the Usain Bolt story: Usain Bolt's total run time at all his Olympic races is just above 2 minutes. For which he had to train for 12 years. The perspective alone is NUTS. Shanks gives pretty much the same vibes.

My favorite Shanks line remains "[my arm;] I gave it to a kid." Truly chilling, 4Kids dub

This now is one of my new favorite one piece analysis. Shanks is one of the best written characters in the series and one of the most crucial pieces that make the story what it is, all of that while appearing less than most secondary characters. He's definitely one of Oda's biggest flexes as a writer. It's s always so exciting to get a RU-vid notification for a Morj analysis video.

This whole video is the perfect rebuttal to the "Shanks is secretly evil and is only using Luffy to get to the One Piece" idea. Thematic consistency is a huge part of Oda's writing, he is not going to compromise the decades worth of valuable messaging that Shanks's character represents in his life's work for a quick twist.

People don't understand how hard is to write a character like shanks, oda literally doing a perfect job with him.

When you think about it, Shanks and Mihawk's relationship is kinda like Superman and Batman. Like Superman Shanks has a more optimistic view of the world and trust in people and like Batman Mihawk is skeptical of everyone and prefers keeping to himself. But despite their differences they share a camaraderie.

I dont think the community understands how well morj does with character analysis. Excellent video

Shanks just has that IT factor in him. Everytime he appears the fandom just goes crazy.

The way Oda has restrained himself from showing Shanks too much for over a thousand chapters is why Oda is so good. He has patience and knows that it's best to build up to him. If this was any other manga, Shanks would have had a bunch of fights and been defeated before chapter 100

Shanks is like Urahara in Bleach. Appear to be cool, reckless, not care a bit, easy going. But every villain has some respect to him due to the unknown limit of his power/understanding.

the wisdom of Shanks consists in don't let his power consume him. he seems to be the same guy of the early episodes even when he is a yonko. being an apprentice or one of the most powerful pirates in the world didn't make him change. Not in a naive way. He knows who he is, what he represents, the power he has (in all senses), and what he can do. but that didn't make him change, he uses the same cloth (now he uses a cape, but that's it), treats everyone with the same respect, and does not demand anything from anyone (just those who attack him)... means he won't use his powers to subjugate anyone, to explore anyone. he is the ideal leader.

I have never even considered Shanks from this point of view, and yet after watching this video it seems so natural, so obvious. Great video, analysis Worj strikes again

This extends to Rogers greatness as well when you consider he essentially raised Shanks as a son. All of these qualities were instilled in him from the Pirate King

Mr Morj, you're an absolute professional. This is what you call a beautiful and well-thought analysis. The one thing that is really interesting to me is Shanks's personal journey. Events he experienced to be who he is today. For me, that's more exciting than the current storyline. Oda sensei is a genius.

Also in typical Oda writing Shanks personality is derived from his experiences of course he would be humble but strong being raised by Roger and silver Growing up looking at those monsters he would know that he is strong but far from crazy strong like his captain and childhood hero he probably idealised and romanticised the idea of the perfect invincible pirate in Roger and he is simply trying to catch up with that idea of the perfect Roger he has in his childhood dream With that in mind it makes sense that he grew up like this

Something interesting to note is that all of the characters mentioned have a fall within their stories which leaves a opening for the protagonist to fulfill.

Love this analysis of Shanks, definitely one of my favorite characters of One Piece

Shanks is Roger's apprentice. What he knows, what he does, and what he seeks to accomplish makes every Marine and Pirate fear and respect the Red-Haired Yonko. Regarding Shanks' skill in swordsmanship and combat, I think all of the skills he utilizes are similar to how Roger fought. Shanks to me is Roger's herald who paves the way for the future Pirate King who will accomplish Joy Boy's dream of a unified and free world.

Great video. If im honest, i always feared that Shanks ends up as a very flat character because the theme that was established in chapter 1 and thats, well, 25 years old. But Oda always gets me - he has a plan for everyone and Shanks will fit into the big frame perfectly once we reach the climax. Each move has a meaning.
