The founder of Sober in the Country was named ‘Local Hero’ in this year’s Australian of the Year awards for her advocacy.

I cried all the way through Shanna's story, (& am still crying now), for her battle, and the awful ways she was betrayed. She emerged as a beautiful, honest, resilient woman with a kind strong man by her side. Her story resonates with many & will continue to , what a wonderful ❤️ legacy😊.

I think Shanna's story resonated with so many . I think most of us know or have known someone with an addiction & it's no party 🎉 I lived with an alcoholic for 8 years, an insidious disease that has the potential to destroy people ,if they let it. I think Shanna's bravery, generosity & honesty helped her escape this awful thing & make a beautiful legacy. Love ❤️ you Shanna, your story is the story of many relate with on so many different levels.

It's a shame how it's become entrenched in the Australian psyche. Happily most people only drink socially and it's not really a problem, but it always has the potential to. I lived with an alcoholic and it was no party🎉 ! I believe many addicts develop a narcissistic personality which prevents them from seeing the truth. My life was basically ruined in many ways, left in tatters. So insidious how you can get drawn into their world 🌎 until you realise it's sucking the life out of you by degrees. Even Spiritually, it's like he sucked my life from me yet , somehow, l couldn't leave. I managed to finally walk out January 2020, and I'm still, slowly picking up the pieces. I hope your journey gets better x

Watched today on abc aust. The Australian story . Approaching her attempts.. this can be studied in soci Work MSW syllabus. . Her home shown in the last scene, is beautiful home.

My dad was an alcoholic it’s so hard to watch as a child growing up seeing the awful effects of it but I get respect from friends that they know I don’t go out to pubs and clubs etc for that reason I do t put myself in that situation not drinking because of my dad it’s not a bad thing to not drink,my children are grown up now to 2 sons aged 26 and 20 and 2 daughters who’s 18 and 16 the boys don’t drink the girls have never tried it and don’t want to try it my children don’t like it we can break that cycle of alcoholism I’m so proud of myself and my family my hubby does t drink either 🙏❤️

My father wasn't an alcoholic, but he didn't need to drink ! We lived in fear of him and his volatile moods. I'm still managing the aftermath and trying to put things into perspective. Thank God for the internet and all the information one can find !...😂

As a person from the "outside", I can see a lot of the same, recurring issues all Anglo-Saxon countries experience. Hint: stop sending kids to boarding schools.

I grew up with an alcoholic in the family, it basically destroyed any normality in the home, all focus went towards this person, for years which simply wore us down. Constant rehab, huge family support was never enough. Sorry to say, that I would rather walk barefoot over coals than to be in company of an alcoholic. Wishing them the best of luck

The highly regarded TV sit-com As Time Goes By amused me. The series centred on very middle class people with very progressive outlooks in a very trendy part of London. In almost every scene they would be drinking alcohol. Always middle class boozing - wine, so much wine, and whiskey. The fictional characters' lifestyle was much admired by their real-life peers. They were mimicked. It became cultural. A glass of wine as soon as get home boasted an inner-city TV celeb who would walk through her front door at 10am. Alcohol is a problem across the whole of society. But only middle class progressives sanctimoniously discuss it as a problem for other people. Over a bottle of wine of course.

At a buffet, I personally sneak corn into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 boiled corn ears in my jacket pockets. It is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corn thinking they were part of the buffet.
