Thanks for this video of knowledge, fun fact ,the monk getting the 3 bricks broken over his head is a kung fu movie star now in days,he was in kung fu hustle he was the kick master
@@ShaolinLT THANK YOU VERY MUCH! (bow in respect to you) I'm a 35 year student of martial arts and Shaolin has always been a moral North Star and a beacon of why we study. (bow in thanks)
I was ever taught the Shaolin Kungfu(performance) by the local people learned from the Shaolin Temple when I was just 5 years old. 50 years later, now, I review it as the fundamental elements of martial arts. Too many people have the misunderstanding that the capability of its performance can be already undefeated, which is not correct and enough. In order to be powerful in combat, the persistent exercise on combat is necessary.
@@spectator4786 😁The fighting methods are basically the same and have nothing to do with the traditional martial arts of mainland China. The traditional martial arts from your mainland shithole will be beaten to the ground if you enter MMA.
Whatever negativity written here , it is widely acknowledged by most Chinese martial art Xifu the gungfu originates most likely from Shaolin . This is a very valuable video filming various real gungfu styles which is a privilege to watch & share .Thanks for sharing
My prayers upwards and fascination of a beautiful nation, heritage and people of China. I loved this account of early chinese tradition. May your people be blessed and happy.
I remember taping this documentary from the Discovery Channel in '94 or '95 - no later than '95. It's the exact same documentary, more or less the same script, but with a different narrator. And different subtitles, as well.
@@itskarl7575 ahh okay. I want to find a good documentary on the ancient monks. As I can’t find much info about them orally, or written . Id love to know their traditions, their lifestyle and what they looked like . And did. And maybe if they ever had to defend their temples?
First time I went to the Shaolin Temple in 2002, there were no authentic warrior monks there. The performers were from some local wushu school who were dressed up to look like monks to fool the tourists. Second time I went was in 2005 and again, no authentic warrior monks. Both times I went, it was with one of the cast members from the movie "The Shaolin Temple", which was filmed at the temple in 1979-1981. He told me that there were no warrior monks there at that time either...just a few old non-martial monks who were actually in the movie. By the time I went, they were all dead. Now, there are "warrior monks" at the temple teaching wushu to those who are gullible enough to pay. People believe what they want to believe.
Shaolin means little pine forest, they learned everything from mushrooms they ate daily. No mushrooms no shaolin. The mushrooms they ate are symbiotically related to pine trees. We find this over the whole world, religions, arts, technologies of all sorts taken to triviality by the forgetfulness of their true origins in fungal dissolution of boundaries and heightened plasticity. Do you know any more you’d be able to share? I’m very interested in real martial arts opposed to todays ubiquitous showmanship.
@@AudeROndt In the case of "Shaolin", Shao = young, lin = forest. There is no mention of "pine" in "Shaolin", although evergreens grow around the temple. I have friends who are current and former professional provincial wushu team coaches in China. If you ask them what they teach, they will say "Shaolin". I don't know why. There are remnants of the original Shaolin gongfu still in existence today and there are teachers who teach them, but there is nobody who knows the entire repertoire because the tradition was broken so long ago.
You’re correct! These Temples are funded by the CCP for Tourism. Real Shaolin Temples would not allow cameras and Movie productions. Shao meaning (little, young) Lin meaning (forest, trees)
Yes he played in Ip Man and Kung Fu Hustle. He's always killed off as a fallen hero though but you can tell his Kung Fu is legit! He's featured here @16:24 in the Documentary
These man have incredible strength .. incredible. Don’t believe me? Try to squat and keep your legs tight while remaining upright. Practice some of the movements and try to remain still. I am currently training in the great mystery and the calcification of the body. One trained in this could end a man with one blow.
I may say there are strict codes of rules & conduct served to discipline all attendees . In olden days ,the Monks would test the sincerity of those who are keen to come to Shaolin temple to learn .It is traditionally accept only Buddist Monks & not opened to public at all . One need to read up the stories related to Ching Emperor YongZh, who feared the Temple harbor rebellions & waged war on Shaolin Temple ,there is a real episode happened & a film was made to depict such cruelty to destroy Shaolin Temple & eliminate all the Monks & learners there .Too long to discuss here .Do google & check it up if keen
from what I know , True Kung Fu was refined by MERCENARIES ... they fought for a living , needed it to defend, attack and all that. It was a way of life. A monk does not need to fight. Even in Bruce lee time, the history of Hong Kong was it was run by street gangs, fights and knife attacks...violence was a way of life, that is type of place where practice and innovations take place. Much like UFC environment nowadays , although highly skilled but not as violent as the past fighters, cause of rules of engagement. I also have read how the old masters would practice eye gouges on monkeys and animals and would repeatedly and methodically break their own knuckle bones to make them extra calcified and hard. Many other such practices. A sedentary monk will only do demonstrations.
@ShaolinLT Amazing! Thank you so much. Do you know the complete name of the taolu at 11:44. I came across the same monk doing the same form, but I couldnt find any information. Funny thing, the video mentions the Snake, but I'm pretty sure this is Tang Lang... but... what do I know. Please, let me know. Amituofo!!
You leave out he returned to India and made the single largest development of Yoga in history based on what he learned from the Shaolin monks, including medicine and nutrition.
Jest bolshaja dolia pravdi. No po sei den mnogo realnich nositelei tradicii v narode. V Shaolin sechias takoi kompromis - mix iz tradicionnovo i sportivnovo wushu. It is very difficult to leave the animal realm, it may take thousands of lifetimes, human birth is difficult to achieve, a good human rebirth is even harder.
Figure the hutu slaughtered the tutsi in Rwanda, 1994, their kung fu and sword training could work provided the monks have underground means of moving and hiding.

Question: who built those massive stone temples in 1533.werent they there before him and he restructured it? Was he alone so rich to finance it.or were there numerous investors who believed &supported him.im not a tartarian suggestor, but who really built such structures at that time?
The architecture of the temple changed numerous times. It was always supported by the government. Plus monastery had a big amount of farming land and a mill (which, by the way, was the latest technology of that time:)
