MY LOOP PEDAL [leetownsend.com...]
Shape of You by Ed Sheeran is one of two new singles from forthcoming album "Divide" and was released today so I did something I have never done before. I made my own Shape of You Cover on the day of its release! It's taken the best part of all day to learn, arrange and record the song and then edit the video but I'm quite happy with the result.
I recorded this cover using my Boss RC30 Loop Station.

The loop sounds great! Definitely a different style to approaching the cover, I enjoyed you keeping the vocals simple too. Gives it more of a raw sound! Keep up the solid covers - MoonroofMusic (Dan)

Nice. Just got the rc 30. Thanks for the tips. You should do "somebody i used to know" Ive seen some good fingerstyle. Curious how a looper would do. Maybe ill try it when i get comfortable with mine.

Amazing cover, when will there be tabs? and do you also other pedals then the BOSS RC-30?

Hey! Thanks so much for the kind words. I will make a tutorial very soon, hopefully this week. Other than the RC-30, I use the GE-7 Graphic EQ on the entire song and OC-3 Super Octave for the 4th loop layer at 0:42. I also use the RV-5 Digital Reverb pedal but I switched that off for this song to give it the dryer hip hop sound. Glad you enjoyed it :)

Already learned it by hearing and watching. Really easy to only learn by that. I'm using for looping a RC300, the big big brother from the RC30 (I have both) but im looking for a simpel eq to combine it. I also have the OC3

+Eppo Good work! Yeah it's not too difficult if you're familiar with looping :) I tend to set my highs and lows slightly higher than half way and my mids slightly lower than half way if that makes sense.

Ever thought about using the direct out and normal output of the OC3 in the mono and stereo input of the RC30, then you can layer by choice the 1st and 4th layer at the same time

+Eppo I actually could do that because my guitar has 2 pickups with separate outputs. See my video "Installing an endpin jack" for more on that. I only send one of my signals through the OC3 because I wasn't sure what the pedal does with the 2 outputs. I think I also set it up this way because I didn't have enough patch leads. At some point, I'll experiment more with my board setup and maybe even do a video on that too.

Good job! I have to tune down 1/2 step to even think about hitting those high notes. I've made a few videos of myself covering some Ed Sheeran songs and a few other artists. Do I need to get the artist's permission to publish?

Thanks for your comment. You can publish covers as long as you don’t try to pretend it’s your work as far as I’m aware. The original artist’s record label will probably monetize your videos with ads too but they’re entitled to. Not sure how this will work with the new RU-vid policy...

Can I ask, how often do you use the features that the RC 30 has that the RC 3 doesn't? How often do you use the second channel, and do you ever use those loop effects etc.? Can you not use the RC 3 to loop vocals?

Hi Thomas, thanks for your comment. I never use the loop effects and to be honest, I’ve never been able to understand what possessed Boss to put them there at all. I do use the second channel a lot though for the more complex covers such as “Castle on the Hill”, “Shape of You” and “Let’s Dance”. Pretty much, it allows you to record a beat in one channel and then a riff which is only used in the chorus. You can then drop the riff out for the verses and bring it back in later. I’m not sure if you can plug a mic into the RC-3, I’ve never even seen one, let alone used one. Do you know if you can or not?

Lee Townsend Thanks for the reply! I don't think you can use a mic with the RC 3, but I wouldn't use that anyway. I'm torn over weather I'll actually use the second channel, and whether I can justify £150 on my first pedal.

If you want a looper, the RC-30 is definitely the way to go but it’s like anything. If you don’t think you’ll use it, it’s probably best to wait. I earn my main income from performing live so for me, it wasn’t a big expense. If you’re buying it to play at home, it’s a bigger price to pay, I understand that.

+Adam Brown Thanks for the feedback man. Yeah I kind of made this one sound a bit dry on purpose as I felt that the style of the song doesn't lend itself to loads of reverb or anything. By fx, are you referring to reverb, eq, compression or something else? Studio sound has never really been my strong point but I hope to improve over the coming months. Cheers again for your comment!

Just the drop off on the body part was a bit flat. Bloody good cover imo. Not an easy song to cover and sing especially after hearing it only a couple of times hahha
