Written for CoMA Singers as part of the nonclassical AIR scheme, SHAPENOTE was inspired by the tradition of shape note singing, a type of social and congregational singing originating in 18 th c. England but popularized in the American South. In early shape note handbooks such as Sacred Harp, solfege syllables were linked to visual shapes - circular, square, and triangle noteheads - which enabled those unable to read standard notation to still participate in a “singing”. The CoMA Singers have collaboratively realised the score, with the understanding that other performances, and other performers, will yield very different results.
