Amazing skills for storytelling. The creatures you talk about is very simular to our old norse myths about "Nøkken" (the nixie). You are a living commercial for your country and these films really made me interested in the rich Scottish culture and history. You really made me love Scotland and the nature and scenery is just breathtaking. Keep up the good work - love your movies. Greetings from Denmark

I've heard you can identify a Kelpie by their hair because no matter what form they take they can't fully change their mane. Though, different stories I've heard vary on what the giveaway is. Some say that their mane/hair always has a green tint to it; others say that no matter how long they've been out of the water their hair is always damp. I've also heard some versions where it's not really hair, but rather their mane is made of rushes or some other water plant.

My first exposure to the concept of the Selkie came from a Tom Clancy novel of all places. A character who was a hired assassin took on the name of Selkie, due to it's ability to change forms. I really liked the character and molded several roleplaying chars after her in my late teens/early twenties. Of course as I learned more of the actual myths I realised how poor the portrayal of the creature was in my original exposure, but I have kept a love for the myths.

Oh Yeah that's great story telling! Back in the day after walking the WHW I took home two cheaply issued booklets with Celtic and Scottish fairy tales. I was imedeatly gripped as the stories were dark and black and absolutely terrifying. They must still be around somewhere, I'll have to look them up once more.. Cheers and thanks, abfab dozi!!

My great grandfather was from Mexico City and when he would visit us for Christmas he would tell us stories about witches that would turn into dogs and birds the size of humans. We would all sit around him eating popcorn and drinking sodas, his stories were scary, sometimes I would have nightmare but I loved every minute of it. My great grandfather was a great story teller, I'm glad he shared all his stories with us, I started writing them down so that way when I have grandkids I can tell them his scary stories... Great video and thanks.

for some reason kelpies and selkies are both present in icelandic folklore. kelpie is called by several names, 2 that i remember are Nennir and Nykur (important!) its physically described to look like a normal gray horse except for having backwards hooves and a cows tail always found uncomfortably close to a deep freshwater. kelpie is less aggressive but is instead very cunning in icelandic myths. Selkie is unchanged, sometimes genuinely in love with a human, sometimes seeking vengence.

That's probably because of Irish and Scottish slaves that viking warriors took to Iceland. There's a bit of Icelandic folklore that's a blend of old Norse and Celtic myths. I'm not surprised to hear that both Kelpies and Selkies are in some stories of Icelandic folklore.

That was fascinating Tom! You're a really great raconteur. I can imagine you in the laird's hall 1,000 years ago keeping all the folk enthralled on a dark knight, everyone a bit dim in the smoke from a huge peat fire. And you, maybe with a wee harp too. Aye, a harp. That works.

I love the diverse content. It makes the experience you give us more emersive. When I was young; and there was no internet, dinosaurs roaming; I had a CD90 audio tape of folk tales. The Fairy Flag of Dunvegan, Arthurs' Treasure and Cap of Rushes. I'd listen to it over and over whilst painting lead elves and orcs, or Judge Dredd figures. Now with many careers behind me, I see the connections between stories, how they adapt in oral traditions, how the tropes and motifs can show anthropological data. It's fascinating to see how we still structure our societies according to our fables and myths. Anyways... I thank you for your Telling, nice delivery... you are multi talented indeed Sir! m out

This was fun, Tom. Hope you'll tell more Scottish stories sometime. And thank you for the setting you chose for the second one. It's a near dead ringer for the setting I've been trying to create for a scene in a story I'm writing. It's as close as if I'd asked you to go out and find such a place.

I have never heard these stories before but heard others about both these creatures. The one I heard of the Selkie was it had to remove it's seal skin to transform into human form. It also needed it's seal skin to return to the sea. A fisherman fell in love with a selkie that visited him often and to stop his new very beautiful girlfriend from leaving he stole her sealskin and hid it. Making her In effect a prisoner on land. After sometime and while he was out fishing she found her seal skin and escaped. In the stories I learned of Kelpies , they usally take the form of a beautiful horse which entices people to try and ride the horse. The people become stuck to the horse which then heads into the water and drowning it's victim. There are many tales that follow that format.

As I’ve said in another comment, the Scots who moved to East Texas and other parts of the South had a big influence on the culture. Ghost stories were very big in my childhood, including one about an ancestor who killed a soldier to protect her milk cow. Supposedly if I go to where she lived he will show up and shout “we’re’ s my milk!” Very scary at age 6…pretty funny now. Love Silkie stories.
