Shaq moving to the Lakers was not championship focused nor was he joining on to a super team. He was honestly, keeping in mind we didn’t know what Kobe would become, switching to a team that wasn’t as good as the one in Orlando. The Lakers at the time he signed there hadn’t contended for a championship since the first Jordan Finals when the Bulls beat the Lakers. Since then the Lakers were an early out. Shaq wanted to be in Hollywood and get all that it offered to him and the Lakers offered him the contract he wanted after the Magic had tried to throw out a lower offer towards the end of the negotiation that he was upset with. The really one time Shaq ever chose his destination he went after the fame abd fortune he felt LA would bring not stacking a team. Every other move was a trade outside of the final year he played where he signed a one year deal in Boston. He demanded a trade out of LA over a money dispute while we all thought it was Kobe. The Lakers tried to get Dirk from the Mavs which didn’t happen and then the Heat swooped in to grab him. The Heat traded him off to Phoenix because he was old, had an expensive contract, the Heat weren’t good, and he was injured a lot. The Suns dumped him to the Cavs basically to escape his salary. Shaq just happened to land at decent teams in the trades because the only teams ready to take the gamble on the potential ceiling if Shaq was healthy and played to his potential with a large contract attached were contending teams that felt that adding him could tip them over the edge to winning a championship rather than falling short. Would’ve been interesting to see a prime Shaq ring hopping back then - granted he never needed to.
