If you are worried that people may not be frequently checking their SharePoint for new discussion items, is there a way to notify them of a new discussion? Or does it just depend on them checking the Discussion area? Thank You!

+Perry Senjem Click "Alert me" on the top ribbon - you need to have permission to do that

Hello, Is there a way to view the discussion replies as a "tree" ( similar to standard forums view) and not as a flat list?
@directorcia
@directorcia 5 лет назад
Not really. Discussions is a 'classic' web part that really isn't popular any more. Better to embed something like Yammer.

Thank you for the video Robert. Do you know where I should be searching to find out how to have the discussion board fill the entire page horizontally? It's super restrictive and only uses about half the page. It makes it very difficult to share images and screencaptures done on screens with 1080p resolution. Thanks.

I would not use a discussion board as it is old tech and I reckon will be depreciated at some point. For chat, I'd be using Teams.

@@directorcia Discussion Boards themselves aren't old tech. Just SharePoint's implementation of them. We already use Teams at the office, but that's a terrible platform for ongoing topics that should ideally last for years. There's no way to reference information inside of a Teams chat nor Team. I'm part of quite a few motorcycle discussion boards. That's the only reasonable platform that would work for this type of training/information exchange. The equivalent would be using Discord for live chat type things. It's... it's not good. Honestly if I could just get the discussion board web app to actually fill the entirety of the zone it'd probably be okay for our needs. I'm just unclear on how to modify the behavior of the web app to do so.

@@matttriestodothings Yammer then. I strongly recommend again using Discussion boards.

@@matttriestodothings But if u must. Create a new blank web part page with a single column format. Embed the discussion board at the top. Edit properties as needed. Then u can make this new web part page the home page.

@@directorcia Robert--I really appreciate the replies. I've actually gotten our company fairly involved with Yammer. I'd argue we're one of the better ones at using it; however, it's more of a "facebook" type interaction for trying to grab a quick answer from a collective of people. You can't even link a Yammer discussion to someone else nor is there a good way to catalogue discussions. So it's not a great platform for carrying out technical discussions on specific topics for potentially years on end like a discussion board/forum is capable of. I've seen a few companies that sell a canned program to add a legitimate discussion board to SharePoint, and I've got a demo setup next week. I really don't know if I want to pay for it though, but it may be worth it. However, honestly, if the discussion board Topic and Reply screens would just EXPAND TO THE EDGE OF THE ZONE!, then I wouldn't need anything else. This may legitimately be two lines of code. I just am not a SharePoint developer. I've gotten quite a bit done through trial and error for our small company, but I just can't figure this part out. Got SharePoint Designer connected to the site but just can't figure out how to modify the web part to expand to the edge. Any images added in excess of 600px width end up breaking the whole thing. If I knew a SPO developer, I could probably pay them for an hour to fix this. If you happened to know anybody or a group that does that, I'm open to suggestions. Example of what I'm talking about: i.imgur.com/PGPdfQW.jpg i.imgur.com/22oMXjg.jpg

what if you answer to Robert? would he be notified that you answered to him? I need a way for people to get notified if someone else answers to one of their answers

You should be using another tool I suggest like Yammer not discussion boards which are more static in nature

Hello- is there a way to assign permissions so that visitors can add a discussion but not delete discussions? I only see the option for "Contribute" which allows the user to "delete list items and documents." We are trying to make a "Question and Answer" portion of our site and we would like people to be able to ask questions but not delete them (theirs or others).
@directorcia
@directorcia 3 года назад
Not easily. U need to create a new permission level using the 'contribute' as the base and then remove the 'delete item' option when creating the new level like so - sharepointmaven.com/how-to-create-a-custom-permission-level-in-sharepoint/

How do you make the users icon show in the discussion list? Not just the author?
@directorcia

This is a basics discussion board. It only records users who have made comments

Would communicating in the MS Teams be the same as a discussion board in the Sharepoint site? Pros/Cons?
@directorcia
@directorcia 4 года назад
More features in Teams, easier to manage, plus many benefits. Discussions are old tech now basically inside Sharepoint when you consider alternative like Teams and Yammer
@aarontheyoung

Teams and Yammer both have a long way to go as far as my review shows. You can’t even create a Teams posting that has formatted text and inline images. Yammer doesn’t either. I imbedded them both in my Sharepoint 2019 test site and found them lacking.

I've never tried Yammer but Teams is extremely resource intensive and unstable from a DoN point of view and from the perspective of someone who has to use Navy supplied equipment (limited memory, etc). I really don't like Teams in the DoN environment because you can't reply to a previous chat in thread or at least as far as I can tell. I run a SW COP and would like a better approach than email. I'm hoping a Discussion Board would help. I need to be able to "tag" and improve the default view.

I would suggest Discussion boards is old tech and you should be using something like Teams instead.

Can this be made anonymous as in an "anonymous suggestion box"? and don't show comments?
@directorcia
@directorcia 6 лет назад
Okan Korsal no. You need to authenticate to SharePoint to gain access and that means all your interactions are recorded so. Somewhere in the system.
@Okikor1
@Okikor1 6 лет назад
Robert Crane yes, my users authenticate but can I make the replies to a discussion board show up as anonymous?
@directorcia
@directorcia 6 лет назад
Okan Korsal no, becuase once they are in SharePoint they are identified by the system as I said. Everything they post is marked as done by their account.

@@directorcia Humm...i thought you might say that. So MS is moving important collaboration components OUT of sharepoint when they just figured out how to get them in? Everything is so mixed up anymore...how dows anyone know what to use for and when when and where? It all overlaps with no clear definitions. Seriously, how does any company actually use this stuff? SP or teams or any of the other new apps. Its maddening. I called and asked MS what to use when. They COULD NOT GIVE ME ANY GOOD ANSWER as they didnt even know. Its just bad and so many I see complain about it. How are we supposed to use something that the producers are not even sure about?
