To be fair, after he knifed them in the head, they clearly were put off by that and unlikely to try anything again. He's probably learned to expect certain responses from sharks. Plus the whole reason he fought so hard in the first place WHILE holding onto the tuna (instead of giving it up) is because that catch took hard work and makes him serious money. His priority was the job, the whole time.

The blood is what attracts them too. Probably too late, but getting what they viewed as the meal out if the water and stopping the blood could make them lose interest.

Also interesting, there was another HUGE hazard present. With the way the fish was swimming, he diver seems to have gotten wrapped up in some line (or he certainly could have). That will easily kill you if it constricts your movement and holds you underwater. Even with a knife, you might not be able to free yourself.

Yea...I think it would have been much safer to just give them the fish, but on the other hand...maybe sharks should start learning humans are dangerous. This guy was amazing!! I always tell my son not to go into the ocean without a knife...or even the woods for that matter

Some consider not giving up the fish in this situation to be selfish and dangerous, but the truth is it is very, very SELFLESS. By giving the shark the tuna, it sets a dangerous precedent that “human/diver = free food”. That is not only super dangerous for the next person to come along, but for the sharks as well. By fighting them and keeping the fish, hopefully the sharks now realize that “human = fight” and have a lower chance of trying this again.

These are Galapagos Sharks, these sharks are known specifically for chasing/hunting Sailfish and Swordfish (the Sailfish is the second fastest recorded fish on this planet behind a Black Marlin btw. Clocked at a recorded speed of 67.85MPH.) Now the fastest recorded speed we have of a Galapagos shark is 32MPH, however there are accounts of them going much faster 50-60MPH (which makes sense when people have seen them chasing sailfish.) Now the fastest recorded speed for a Yellow Fin Tuna is 47MPH. Meaning that a hungry galapagos shark would more than likely hunt yellow fin tuna (also you mentioned sharks go for bigger prey, you understand how big and meaty Tuna get right? Like yellow fin by themselves are like the middle child of Tuna and grow to be as big as 400lbs+ (The biggest ever caught to date is a 445Lbs & as an interesting side note buddy used a live Skipjack Tuna as bait to catch this behemoth fish.) Now a galapagos shark is about on averagec100Lbs give or take like 30lbs. Now lets say for fun these are the biggest Galapagos sharks ever at like idk 150lbs, this tiny maybe (and I use a huge fucking maybe here because wieght is hard to judge by a video) 75lb Tuna would still make a decent meal for the 2 of them too share and the sharks dont see it as a threat. My opinion this spearfisherman 100% stole their prey (it would be like watching a deer drop through your scope as your lining up your shot, youd probably go talk to the other hunter and be like "aye") Now with all this being said I'd like to acknowledge that Requiem Sharks (the species Galapagos belong too) do pose a minor threat to spear fishermen and are KNOWN to chase/harrass them and be incredible persistant trying to steal their catch. However that being said we also know that they are incredibly curious of Humans, Swimfins, and Hands. We have also noticed that they like to gather in large groups near fishing opperations (almost as if these fisherman throw guts & garbage in the water and these sharks are just waiting >.>). I'd also like to mention while Galapogas Sharks are listed as one of the most threatening sharks to humans, there are boats that go to the Northern Part of the Galapagos islands everyweek to allow people to dive in open water with SWARMS of Hammerheads and Galapagos and no one ever gets attacked.
