Tough call. They are both great lids. It's comes down to if you are a Snell or ECE helmet person. The Arai is Snell 2010 rated, is better designed to take a hard impact and is slightly heavier. The Race-R Pro has a smaller profile, and has a slight weight advantage, but the ECE rated outer shell is not as rigid. Most race and track day organizations in the US require a Snell 2010 helmet to get on the track. Something to keep in mind. ~Ali
The Race-R Pro is proven at the track. That technology certainly applies in reverse to street use. Competitors would include the Bell Star, or Shoei RF-1100. -CK
Excellent point. Many folks want "race" helmets because they are the best of the best or simply because they are race oriented. When a helmet is built for racing, it might not be the best performing helmet for street use. It's always best to define the primary use of the helmet to start your selection process. ~Ali
The Arai RX-Q is a neutral to slightly round fit and the Shark Race-R Pro has a neutral fit. The Race-R Pro also is more peaked at the top of the head, so the fit feels quite different from the RX-Q. I suggest giving our Gear Geeks a call for more details on the fit of each helmet. ~Ali
The faceshield that works for both the Race-R Pro and the Speed-R will be available in Light Smoke, Dark Smoke, and Iridium Silver. We do not have an ETA when our Shark distributor will have them in stock, but we are hoping to see them before the new year. ~Ali
The GP Tech uses a Cool Max liner. The Shark also uses a sweat-wicking, anti-microbial liner, but it's not a name brand. I still think the Shark Race-R-Pro is a great helmet and would be my pick over the GP Tech. The helmet that could blow both of these out of the water, however, is the new AGV GP Pista which hasn't hit the market yet. Stay tuned for that one. ~Ali
Personally, I'd go with Bell, but you'd find just as many people here that would disagree and recommend Shark instead. AGV is the other brand to throw in the mix. We've got a comparison article on AGV vs Shark - if you do a google search, it should pop up. -CK
Between the Race-R Pro and the GP Tech, I think the Race-R wins. The Race-R Pro uses newer, more advanced technology. I think another top notch option is the Arai Corsair V or the Schuberth SR1. ~Ali
Thank you! I am pretty loyal to Arai when it comes to helmets, but I think Shark did a stellar job with the Race R Pro. If I still had my road-race license, I would definitely rock one of these lids. ~Ali
We hope to have the images up on our site soon. In the meantime, you can enter your email address on the visor you want to be automatically alerted when they come into stock. ~Ali
Unfortunately, we have not been provided product images. You might be able to do a simple Google search to see if someone out there has an uploaded image. ~Ali
We currently only have the clear shields on our site. There are tinted options, but they are currently not available. I suggest adding your email address to your preferred visor on our site so we can alert you via email as soon as they come into stock. ~Ali
The X-Lite helmet isn't really distributed here in the US, so it would be hard for us to make that call without knowing all its features. We do know the Shark Race-R Pro is a great helmet and is a big step forward from Shark. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with the X-Lite helmet that can share their opinion? ~Ali
Excellent point. The Race R is a great option for the street. The review for the AGV PistaGP is already live. Have you seen it yet? Check our RU-vid Channel for details. ~Ali
Thanks Ali ill keep that in mind, 14 years ago i had a Shark foggy rep which was a fantastic lid in its day, but since then i switched to Arai, but i gotta say the 2012 Shark range is phenomenal great designs too.....keep up the fantastic vids...
I've been riding with the Race-R for several months now (had it in Aus for a while now). Absolutely amazing helmet. The airflow through it is great and the distortion free visor works a treat. Cannot recommend this helmet enough.
Yeah bought one on sale recently. It fits snug it's pretty well ventilated when moving. It's a absurdly hot when still. This wouldn't be a issue if moving the visor up didn't require so much effort. It's held in place with a small notch that needs a lot of force to delatch I am constantly worried about snapping it whole trying to open it up. Apart from that small grievance the helmet is league's above anything i've worn before and makes riding such a joy. There consistently on sale (older models) so keep and eye out for a good deal.
does the shark race r feets right in the medium size or we need another number...because sometimes the numbers doesn fit right to the head...i like so much the race r because it gives everything you need...and how about extra parts...are all avaliable...?
Hey. Here in Poland at the moment this shark Race-R pro is same price as Shoei RF-1200 (NXR). Witch one would be better - I want race oriented premium helmet. My biggest factor is safety.
Well, since you probably have a few there maybe try it on , and use sunglasses? Also if you lift visor and look where the cheek pad meets the top liner you could determine if theres spacing . Like for example on the Arai RX-Q. Thanks
Hi i have an 2010 arai rx7 corsair v hopper replica as i live in south-africa...and i was asked if i want to swop my arai for a shark race r pro 2013. My arai is like new...should i swop or not..??? Wich is better as i ride agressive on the road...and safety. Use to have the rsr2 what a gr8 helmet. Pls het me...
Tyronne Bonthuys If your Arai is from 2010, it's about time for a new helmet, even if it still looks new, so swapping for the Shark might be good, since it's 3 years newer. Both are safe helmets, so go for the Shark! -DrewZilla
How does this helmet fit compare to the Arai RX-Q? I bought my RX-Q from Revzilla a few months ago but unfortunately I had a lowside and I am looking for a new helmet. Race-R pro SCREAMS GSXR for me =) I'm seriously considering it, another RX-Q or a Corsair-V. I would love some input on the fit compared to the RX-Q Thanks =)
Id like to get the Shark Race-R helmet but the cheek pads in the Large (Medium crushed my forehead) don't give enough support so the helmet moves side to side more than I like. Can you get larger puffier cheek pads for this helmet or do I fit pads from the smaller model?
You can change the Large cheekpads (35mm) to Small cheekpads (40mm) for a better fit. -Hi-Viz Brian www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-bamboo-cheek-pads
It is, without a doubt, a great piece of quality. And according to the kind reviews from RvZ, further improved for 2013. BUT, there is always a but :) It appears that, only at night, some double vision can occur with upcoming lights. Some people can "see" it, some can´t (like ufo). This is related to how thick the visor is. Anyone "seen the light"?? (this is important for pp who ride at night, like me ;) ).
external noise and comfort + aerodynamics? Now moving away from Nexx or something else and considering this. are these new too? or a few years old? (this video is 2012) is there an updated version of this for 2015 or 2016? whats that loop under the chin curtain? thanks
The current Race-R Pro model has been in production for the last few years, so it's not a brand-new model. The loop at the chin curtain is a cinch with a toggle. You pull on the loop to open the chin curtain. There's a hidden toggle you can release to then fully extend the chin curtain towards your neck once the helmet is on. -DrewZilla
I gotcha. thanks. Ok so when are the new ones coming out? I'd like one i can use for the full 5 years. I'm diggin how the Shark helmets look and all the tech thats in it. I've moved away from looking at the nexx and agv to looking at shark. On an RC51 but might consider the SpeedR over the Race-R
+Pedro Carapeto Both have composite fiber shell construction, and both have a wide field of vision. The main differences are that the HJC uses 3 shell sizes, whereas Shark uses 2 shell sizes for the size range. The Shark has a thicker, more durable face shield, though. The Shark is probably the better race helmet, but the HJC is the better value and is better as an everyday helmet. -DrewZilla
I am considering the Shark Race R Pro and the AGV GP TECH, I can get them at the same price because of a special discount I got. Which one would you suggest? (I ride a Yamaha R125, intermediate oval head).
Netanel Sounds like you could benefit from talking to a Gear Geek! Give us a call at 877-792-9455 or shoot us an e-mail at cs@revzilla.com. My personal preference is the AGV GP Tech. There has been a ton of research and development done on this model specifically for MotoGP. While the Race R Pro is also used in MotoGP, you definitely see more AGV atop the heads of the riders. -CK
Hello REVZILLA i really Need your help. SR1 by Schuberth - RF1100/XR1100 by Shoei - Race R pro By Shark they all felt great with my head shape, my ride style is 70% touring 30% sport, please advise me what to buy. no budget problem. i didn't test any of them on riding and looking 4 the quiet one combined with quality materials. Regards, Barak
Im interested in buying this helmet i have a shark rsi and my size is M and fits perfectly ,but my ring around the head is 59 so iam not sure about this one ??
+Gixxer It's hard to know for sure without trying the helmet on, but you may need a size L for the Race-R Pro. It's worth starting with a medium (M) though. -DrewZilla
Hi guys. Im having an issue with my face shield. If anyone has a helpful comment it will be greatly appreciated! So i got my race r pro and a dark smoke visor. It fits fine but the locking mechanism on the right of the helmet wont turn back in. It fits in the groove but just wont turn. (The left side fits well) can somebody help me out? Thanks!
Make sure you're lining up the circle on the side of the shield with the side plate retention bolt beneath. Also make sure the T-shaped post of the locking mechanism isn't misaligned with the locking lever. Reference the left side locking lever and post for symmetry with the right side. -DrewZilla
RevZilla thanks guys. I figured out the problem. The small allen bolt on the locking mechanism was tightened too much, resulting in the stretch of the locking t shape not being able to reach the helmet. Sadly, the allen bolt has a rounded head. Trying to figure out how to get that small screw out now. Sigh
Yes, you can install both the size large (L) cheek pads and size large (L) helmet liner to make size XL into size L. Please note: there are two versions of the pads. You must read your helmet manual to determine whether your pads are bamboo or non-bamboo. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-bamboo-cheek-pads *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-cheek-pads *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-bamboo-helmet-liner *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-race-r-pro-helmet-liner
The helmets you've selected are the top end race helmets of AGV, Shark, and Bell. They are all up for the task. I personally fit best into the Bell Star with my intermediate oval head shape. What's your head shape? -Hi-Viz Brian www.revzilla.com/motorcycle-helmet-guide
I would also consider the Shoei X-12 and Arai Corsair V. -Hi-Viz Brian 1. www.revzilla.com/shoei-x-12-helmets 2. www.revzilla.com/arai-corsair-v-helmets
sorry, in my last response i havent actally given my head shape, is intermediate oval, and thank you for the recomendation! the chin curtain on the corsair V is removable?
The rule of thumb is 7 years from the manufacture date, 5 years from when you start using it. While this isn't an exact science, it is a conservative estimate that ensures your helmet will remain effective. Will that 2012 helmet be toast after 2 years? I think that depends a lot on how you use it between now and then, but you may want to evaluate whether the savings are worth feeling skeptical of your helmet's condition. -TeamZilla Chris
Might come as one hell of a late response, but still; Race-R is in large part identical to the Race-R Pro. However the Pro has an additional rear spoiler that really does calm things down when tucked away at speed. Even on track you need to be seriously shifting, but, blimey; it does work. Most of my riding is still done on the road, but I'm onto my second Shark Race-R Pro now, doing roughly 50.000 kms a year on average since 2015, and it's my go to crash helmet still. Spoiler doesn't add much on the road, but it does makes you look the bizz, if that's your thing!
Thank you very much for reply.. I bought Yamaha R1, dos these helmets goes With this typ of bike. I have been lookin in your website for 3 dayes now, so i Will be sure what i'm buyin because i live in Denmark europ..:)
Really dig my Race-R Pro. Great weight, air-flow keeps my neck comfortable even on my Bobber. Comfortable with in-ear headphones as well. Dig the Arma graphics as well. Noticeable but more subtle. Highly recommend it.

+John J It's optimized for a race position, so in upright to 3/4 riding, you won't get as much ventilation, and it won't be as aerodynamic. For upright and 3/4 riding, consider the Speed-R, which Shark specifically designed for your riding position. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/shark-speed-r-helmet
Thanks. I am not a fan of anything that has sunshades built (would rather have full eps) Can you recommend something that is ECE that would fit the bill?
+John J In that case, I'd probably recommend the AGV GT Veloce. Or just go for the Race-R Pro with the understanding that the ventilation might just be a little bit diminished when upright. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/agv-gt-veloce-helmet
+MrAndreppc Unless you ride your F800GS in a full tuck race position, the venting just won't work well. It's really designed for a sportbike. If you want similar features and venting in an upright design, consider the Shark Speed-R and Vision-R. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/shark-speed-r-helmet *www.revzilla.com/shark-vision-r-helmets
ha, complementary, seen another review by visor down I think, and the tester also complained of getting a red forehead, due to the central air intake which directs air directly against the forehead. Red like a mosquito bite he said :)
Really wish they hadn't put the skirt around the bottom, completely pointless IMO for a race helmet. Apart from the ventilation and liner quality, I'd much rather ride in the RSR2 my previous lid. Just my imput!
