Shark upright vacuum repair - Easy DIY hose replacement
Replacing the lower hose on your vacuum is an easy fix. Instructions are similar for almost any model. One of the hoses linked below will probably fit your vacuum even if your model number is not listed. What is important is the diameter of the hose and the length. Remember Amazon has a wonderful return policy. ;-)
Your vacuum may have Torx screws or even Torx security screws. You can get a security bit set at Harbor Freight or from the link below to deal with odd screws.

Thank you so much for this video! Some tips for newer models: there’s a single security torx screw on my model just outside of where the bottom part of this hose connects. Other posters mention 2, mine had one. Do not force the cover off, if it seems like there’s still a screw somewhere there is! My ring security screw bit worked perfectly (I *forgot* to replace the torx screw with no ill effects to the vacuum cleaner.) If it’s your first time replacing there is some glue on the inner part where the hose connects. Don’t pull, just unscrew, it will be tough at first but it comes apart with a little effort. Also- you “unscrew” this piece to the right! So don’t be like me whispering ‘lefty loosey, rightie tightie’ over in my head and wondering why it’s not budging. Finally, pay attention when putting the bottom part of the hose back in place- the plastic piece it connects to slopes on the bottom, if its wrong the brush cover will not snap back in place. (Look at the brush cover and the direction it slopes where it connects to this piece) There are two plastic pieces that jut out on the bottom plastic hose connector. The taller one goes on top and the shorter one fits into a hole on the underside. Finally, Mine seemed to be “missing” the same screw you mentioned, but I know I’ve never taken mine apart so go apologize to your kid/wife/or whoever you thought lost it:) Pro tip: the filter sets are cheap on Amazon, you may as well replace them too, your vacuum will work like new. Thanks again for taking the time to make this extremely helpful video!!

My hose split on my Shark UV795. I've had several Hoovers, Dysons and a Kirby and this is the best vacuum I've ever owned. Lord knows how long I've been vacuuming with a broke hose and spewing dirt and dust in my home. Was cleaning the filters and noticed the split hose. Went to a local vacuum repair shop and the owner gave me a hose for free. Just finished repairing it by watching your video. Thanks for the great instructions!

Dysons are crap aren't they. They clog up inside at the most inaccessible spot. I was always down the appliance repair shop with it. Sharks are a pleasure to use, easily steerable and so much lighter. I've just gotta replace the lower hose to get it going again. I may reinforce the new hose with gorilla tape in the hope it won't split so soon. No idea if it'll work, but anything is worth a try!

Thanks for explaining it all from step 1. The trickiest part is knowing if ALL the screws have gotta come out. Many videos start with it all in pieces, which is no use to me! My Jack Russell used to attack the vacuum, she'd actually grab hold of the head, lift it and drag it, pulling me across the room!! She hated it along with hairdryers or anything noisy. Teeth marks were etched into every vacuum appliance we owned! Nothing else wound her up, bar those things. 😂

I have a shark hv320w. The hose was split like yours. Ordered the hose you posted below. (the 1.25 in diameter one). Followed your instructions and with a lot of elbow grease....viola! Perfect, like new suction. A $10 hose from Amazon beats a $110 new motorized floor nozzle suggested to fix this problem via Shark online. Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for very informative video. I watched several before I found yours, which was the best, straight to the point. I have a HV301 and can't find the replacement hose. One repair shop told me I would have to make one because they are not available (????). I called the Shark customer service number and was told that I would have to pay $89 for a new motorized floor nozzle. My vacuum is 5 years old, so that was not about to happen. I found a shop that said he has had that part on backorder forever. He told me to bring it in and he would see what he could do. He found a hose that would fit. The part was $6 and $30 for the labor. It would have been better if I could have found the part and done it myself, but I was more than happy to pay $36 vs.$89 for floor nozzle or $160 for a new one.

The Shark we have requires some kind of Torx lock tip. You need to get a handled tool, as the bits and holder are much larger than the screw holes. Thanks for the video. I've been applying duct tape through the gap, but I'll break down and buy the extended torx bits and the hose.
@ramixnudles7958
@ramixnudles7958 Год назад
Just checked against my Torx lock bit. Ours takes the T20, with the hole in the center of the bit. The deepest screw well is about 1.5 inches deep, so it will require a hand screw driver with at least 2.5" length, not bigger than 1/4" shaft. Thanks for the tube part #. Our German Shepherd won't leave the YF alone when she's vacuuming, insisting on getting his turn at getting vacuumed every few minutes. Vacuuming the dog goes a long way towards keeping the rest of the house cleaner.

That directions were perfect. I’m a 77-year-old woman and I did it! I drew a diagram of the bottom. There are 14 screws and three different sizes. When I finished, it was still screeching, so I had to take it apart again and put in a new belt which was more difficult than putting in the hose. It would’ve been nice if he would have included the directions of replacing a new belt. I did figure it out and now I have a brand new vacuum cleaner.

You would not believe the crap they pulled on the Model NV682 shark. They made all those little screws security torx screws, not just regular ones either, cheap mal formed ones with extra large posts in the centers so that none of my torx security will fit it! also, the only normal Phillip's screw they put in it was a cheap steel one and it's the one under and back a little of the center of the beater bar where it wears off and NO driver can get it at all, I had to drill it and get with a easy out. To get al the other screws I had to modify a small flat head screw driver so this it could fit two of the torx points 1 point apart and rest against the mal formed post, force it down with my thumb and turn the driver with a pair of pillars .25 turns at a time. At this point I realized the threads on the screws were extremely course and self cutting, meaning they drove these into blank holes and cut the threads with the fasteners themselves. These screws fit a machine on an assembly line and probably do not have a hand held tool equivalent The neck on this model does not just go back and fourth like yours - it goes all around from side to side also. so the joint is different. - BOY!

You're doing a great job! At least you got the EZ out to work. I've had very little luck with them over the years. Next time you're at the home center go to the electrical department and get a #1 & #2 Klien Phillips screwdriver. Not sure what is different about them but they rarely slip; worth the money. I have had some luck with stripped Phillips in the past by stretching a rubber band across the tip and forcing into the screw head. Don't give up! You're almost there.

Try cleaning and oiling the beater brush bushings, no WD 40. If it is more like a whistle you may have a slight gap around the new hose. Take the hose out and put some silicone caulk around the outside to help it seal.

Thanks or this. My model, NZ801UKT seems a little different though. All Torx bolts. We got a replacement hose for the NV801 (which appeared appropriate for this part) but the hose looks slightly too narrow, the current and replacement are both black. . I got everything apart except the hose. The hose just didn't appear to be screwed in, fact looking carefully the current hose doesn't appear to have a screw thread to me (the hose shown in the video has a noticeable thread). So I couldn't remove the hose (I know its supposed to be a counterclockwise thread). So unfortunately a failure, possibly due to my skill level, but I think the model is different enough. We may be replacing the whole floor nozzle, but this is £70 (GBP)! but a new vacuum is £199 (GBP).

The hoses are normally glued in with something similar to silicone caulk. If you dig in there with a screwdriver you'll probably be able to get it out. Any flexible hose the right diameter will work, just goop up the outside with silicone caulk and leave it overnight.

Compare it to your old hose to see how different the size is. Inside the round part it screws into you'll see grooves that the hose needs to thread into. The wire of the hose needs to start threading into the groove. You could try a little vaseline or liquid dish soap on the outside of the hose to help get it in.
@mariadorton4266
@mariadorton4266 3 года назад
@@HouseDoctorRay ...good ideas. Thanks. I tried soap....still a no-go. So, after dumpster diving, I retrieved the old hose (which is pretty well shredded) and it is actually smaller at 1 1/4”. I’ll have to see if I can find a hose that size. I do appreciate your how-to video. It’s simple and slow enough for me to follow...and even the little “this could happen” sidebars (‘cause they did) and the heads-up on the screws (I taped them onto a piece of paper so it will be easier to put everything back together.) There is an unmarked button right beside the pipe on the same side as the 'Lift away' button. Or you can leave the canister attached and take them off together.

Excellent video, thanks! I learned some additional things I didn't see here, so I'll pass them on. Some have been mentioned by others. (My model is a Shark Ninja NV680). -I drew a picture of the vacuum head on paper and taped my screws to where they went, as I took them off. Seems like every one is unique! There was even one tiny Philips head screw right in the middle of the underside. There was one screw in the middle, extreme forward position where the roller brush is. Even though I could remove the left and right screws up here, the middle one was underneath clear plastic. Couldn't figure that out so I left it. As a result, I could lift the hood up, but could not take it completely off. -There is a SPRING by the left wheel; it was hard to figure out where it went so that I could get everything closed up. Meanwhile, every time I tried, either the suction hose connector came loose, or the wiring going from the handle to the floor base would come out of it's channel. Once I laid everything down flat like in the video, I could get it all back together ok. -It doesn't say specifically here, but you need SECURITY Torx bits (aka hollow centers) to get these screws off! You can get a set online cheap. Mine used one size, T20. Get long ones. -I had trouble getting the old hose free from the rubber connector. It seems like it had been glued. So, I boiled some water in a pot, and soaked the end in there for 30 seconds--that loosened it up and it came off with brute force. --I also used petroleum jelly to help thread the new hose onto the end in the handle, and in to the rubber boot for the base. Worked great! -Lastly, as others mentioned, the hose is threaded backwards from what you'd expect, so righty tighty/lefty loosy does NOT work. Thread the new hose on COUNTERclockwise. Again, a great video! My vacuum works great again. Thank you!!!

If your ends aren't broken go to local vac & sew store or pool supply store. Both have hoses of different sizes in stock. Even the big hardware stores have flexible hose in stock. Silicone caulk or automotive RTV will likely hold a new piece of hose in place after you dig the old one out.

This video was excellent and inspired me to give it a shot (you gotta love the last scene where the vacuum passed the bowser test!) Replacing the torn hose was a piece of cake! Rather than buying a new hose for the Shark UV450, I took the recommendation from another RU-vid and removed the hose that comes with the hardwood floor cleaner attachment which I rarely if ever use. It fits PERFECTLY, and the vacuum works as good as new. I'm pretty pissed with Shark: I called Shark to inquire what size (diameter) hose I would need for the UV450 and they couldn't answer it! They also said they don't make replacement hoses and that the remedy is to buy a new vacuum! Well, I won't buy another Shark when this model finally bites the dust (so to speak) if they can't answer basic questions about their products. Thanks.

It's not that they won't answer it. They DON'T SELL IT! they force you to buy a new vacuum. Really ticked me off. Luckily people sell after market hose. You just have to find the right size even if they don't show the model, you can make it work.

Thorough without getting lost in the high grass, nicely done. Couldn't get the old hose to turn but you can cut it and pull it out by the wire reinforcing. Also later models have a couple of tabs to hold fitting on the lower end of the hose in place rather than the screw that somebody messed up on yours. This unit is a necessity with labs too.

A warning to those trying this on one of the newer DuoClean models, the hose is glued into moulded rubber inserts in the top and bottom, to get the bottom insert out you have to remove the outer casing as described in this video and twist out the abs plastic ‘plenum’ that the hose lower insert connects into, this will allow you to access the three push tabs to remove the rubber insert. The upper rubber insert is much more difficult because it is clipped into the plastic tubing and will have to be pulled forcefully out with the old hose. If you can get the old tubing out without taking out this upper insert then it makes getting the new tubing in much easier. You’ll need to strip out the old hose from both ends (remember which one goes at the top and bottom) because it is glued in. Once the new hose is pushed into both the top and bottom, you need to look down the top tube for two slots about half way up the tube, this will accept two tabs on the upper insert that will need to be pushed all the way from the bottom with a long tool. There are asymmetric protrusions on the insert that slot into grooves in the tube to make this a bit easier. It took me a good two hours to correctly align the top insert and get it properly pushed into the slots, if it’s not seated properly you will not get good suction, because this upper insert seals against the airway. This is quite a difficult job on the newer models because the hose is glued in and can’t just be twisted as in the video.
@number4cat1
@number4cat1 2 года назад
Other model(s) make it much harder to remove the old hose. As mentioned in a comment below, there are torx screws; also the hose is glued in, appears to be very slightly smaller in diameter than the replacement hoses, and requires disassembly of several more parts (many more screws) to get to one end of it.
@MattPSU02
@MattPSU02 2 года назад
Yeah the torx security screw is just totally unnecessary.
@piratestick898
@piratestick898 2 года назад
Having just done this i found that rather than trying to unscrew the old hose the simplest removal was the literally pull it out. The hose will split but the wire internal pulls the entire remainder out as you pull.

Ray, I do not believe this hose will fit the The Shark NV800W, NV800, NV801, NV803, UV810 and NV801Q belong to the Shark DuoClean Powered Lift-Away Speed series. They require a smaller hose. I think it is more like a 1 1/4 inch than a 1 1/2 inches. You can in fact screw the 1 1/2 inch hose over the hose for these models. Perhaps others can verify this. Also I have yet to find the correct hose on line or elsewhere.

We have the NV800 series and you can no longer screw the hose out as it’s glued so you need to pull it out. Then try and remove the hose from the rubber connectors and with it the glue. Then screwing the new hose back into the rubber connectors is a pain as the keep moving so you need to re glue them before trying to push the connector inside the stem as that is a massive pain. Thanks for the guide though helped a little!.

Great instructions! Unfortunately the newer models (NV750) have a ton of super tacky glue at either end of the hose. I had to destroy the hose completely to remove and then spent a lot of time trying to remove the glue so that the new one would thread in properly. I wonder if they did this to thwart repairs, as this part doesn't really need to be glued. If so, here's one person that didn't fall for it!
