Sharon Gless. Sharon is known for her television roles as Maggie Philbin on Switch (1975-78), Sgt. Christine Cagney in the police procedural drama series Cagney & Lacey (1982-88), the title role in The Trials of Rosie O'Neill (1990-92), Debbie Novotny in the Showtime cable television series Queer as Folk (2000-2005), and Madeline Westen on Burn Notice (2007-2013). A 10-time Emmy Award nominee and seven-time Golden Globe Award nominee, she won a Golden Globe in 1986 and Emmys in 1986 and 1987 for Cagney & Lacey, and a second Golden Globe in 1991 for The Trials of Rosie O'Neill. Gless received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1995.
As the final contract player at Universal Studios, Gless guest starred and costarred in many of TV’s top-rated series, including: The Rockford Files, Marcus Welby, M.D, The Bob Newhart Show, House Calls, and Switch.
Over 30 million viewers each week watched Gless as New York Police Detective Christine Cagney in the first hour-long drama to feature two females in the leading roles, Cagney and Lacey, for six Emmy-winning seasons; Gless winning two, followed up with an award winning star-turn in two seasons of The Trials of Rosie O’Neill for CBS.
Another generation of viewers fell in love with her portrayal of Debbie Novotny, a dirty-mouthed devoted mom to a gay son and confidant and loyal supporter to his gay friends, for all five seasons of Showtime’s daring smash series, Queer As Folk. U.S.A. network cast her in their radical series, Burn Notice, as the chain-smoking and persuasive Madeline Westen, an unpredictable mixture of heart and heat, for which Gless earned her 10th Emmy nomination.
Gless has also starred in major theatrical productions (Misery, Chapter Two, Round-Heeled Woman) on London’s West End as well as U.S. tours.
Gless has played reoccurring characters on The Exorcist, Casualty (BBC), The Gifted, and Nip/Tuck, garnering Gless yet another Emmy nomination.
Simon & Schuster published Gless’s autobiography, Apparently There Were Complaints, in December 2021, garnering raves and becoming an Amazon’s Editor’s “Book of the Month,” a #1 seller in Autobiographies of Actors & Actresses, an Apple Audiobook “Must Listen,” a “Best Audiobook” by Vulture.com, and an “Earphones Award Winner” from AudioFile. The Audie Awards nominated Gless as a 2023 finalist in the category of “Narration by an Author.” Publisher’s Weekly called her “a masterful storyteller,” and Booklist deemed her autobiography “a perfect book to get lost in.”
Gless co-stars with Pierce Brosnan and James Caan in the upcoming major motion picture, Fast Charlie, slated to be released in 2024.
Most recently, Sharon Gless co-executive produced and appeared in Show Her the Money, a documentary featuring female entrepreneurs. Released in September of 2023, the film has won multiple top awards at film festivals across the country.
