It makes more sense for it to be a funeral. If the old man in the back is the father and the the (much younger) woman driving is his wife why isn't he sitting in the front passenger seat? The whole atmosphere is much more funereal than a wedding, especially with the sun going down in the background. The woman driving is his daughter and they just came from burying his wife (her mother".

I just saw the ad again and there is a photo of the old man holding a champagne glass, which could rule out a funeral, I guess. So why is he holding a ring and why isn't the girl in the photo wearing a wedding dress? It's totally ambiguous.

And why does the old man know the song and why does it supposedly cheer him up?

ufjir I don't really think the song means much. Just a soppy sounding song that's full lyrics do not fit whatsoever - (IIRC) "I went in your bathroom and shit in your toilet" is one of the lyrics. Anyways, if it was supposed to fit into the story, I think it could be something that comforts him, maybe even her favorite song. But I personally think it was just to develop a mood and to tell the viewer "Hey, the plot here is a bit sad, dramatic, and meaningful." Without the song, or with a song in a different genre, many people may not even be here. The song sets the tone and makes the viewer curious - makes the viewer think back on the entire commercial and try to see what the story is. With something different, it's possible the viewer would not second guess the theme of it, which is that a Volvo is something that makes memories and will take you on extraordinary journeys. It's possible without it, people would like like "Wtf..?" rather than curious about the commercial and the story - thus making the ad fail. So overall - The song is probably just a moody song that was chosen to tell the viewer it's a "deep" commercial. It could be replaced with a similar sounding song. But the song's actual relevance to the story is minimal, if not nonexistent. Like many songs/soundtracks, it's just meant to tell the mood and (in commercials) get the viewer's attention and sell a product. The maker of the commercial was a little clever and tied the entrance of the music to the stereo in the car. Pretty awesome considering the fact subconsciously it's showing off the interface, the speakers, more parts of the interior, etc. all while giving the mood to the commercial. Very smart decision. Not only that, but having the music start in the middle of the commercial is also brilliant because a silent TV get peoples' attention. Having half your commercial silent really turns heads. The director of the commercial made some really smart decisions overall. Moody song, shows off the car, tells an intriguing story, sells the car with the story, etc. It's all very smart. Heck, having a grown adult male in the back seat ALSO sells the car by showcasing the backseat legroom subconsciously. It's really a brilliant commercial.

+Oozywolf two things; one, you should be in marketing 😃 and two your explanation for their 'story' was spot on in my book. Your observation on the marketing point of this commercial is brilliant, again get into marketing 😉
