VSC Tools now has a steel production version of this jig available.

Playlist featuring the new sharpening jig. • Twist Drill Bit Sharpe...
In this video I show a really simple low tech way to sharpen twist drill bits of almost any diameter very accurately. I sharpen 4 old really rough drill bits and drill some steel without the aide of cutting fluid or pilot hole to show cutting effectiveness. In this video I concentrate on 118deg drill bits.

I am a machinist/toolmaker and will never use this jig. Agree, it does drill the hole in the video, however, as the drilling process started I can see that the drill is not done properly. Unfortunately, this is not the correct way !

I am almost 84. I have watched thousands of RU-vid videos on topics from an atom to zebra fish. My grandfather was a wheelwright in West Virginia I have a natural affinity for working with wood. This is the best video on the topic. An easy to do sure fire way. You will always get the angle right because of the jig. Also I like how the effectiveness of sharpening is proven by actually drilling into metal. Thanks for sharing.

I watched this video years ago and always had it in the back of my mind. A couple days ago I was drilling through steel and the bit wasn't going anywhere. I decided to just touch it up on the grinder and see what happens. I did it free hand and was sloppy but it literally took 15 seconds. Went back to the workpiece and was drilling through the steel like it was pine. Perfect, long spiral shavings. My mind was blown. Had to come back to see the jig. Now I see you're offering it for sale. I could make my own but will probably buy one just to show my support. Thank you!

Make sure your rest board, or at least you bit will sit above the center line of the wheel so your cutting edge angle isn't ass backwards and then this is a good idea.
@silkyway6575
@silkyway6575 2 года назад
@@ravenshield7823 Thanks for the tip. I actually made mine out of a bit of scrap steel and put a couple of clips on it so that it's always in the same place when I attach it to the grinder. I might be able to grind a bit off the back edge so that it tips up a little at the front.

Thank you for the jig idea. Made one and promptly fixed some drills that were broken in half and now they are just shorter than they were new, but cutting nicely.
@paulhunt598
@paulhunt598 Год назад
Sharpening broken drills only works marginally. This is because the web thickness increases the further you are from the designed cutting edge. This forces the larger non cutting web to have to plunge through the material or requires a larger pilot hole.

Nice, I have a 3 lb coffee can half full of broken and burnt bits , headed to the shop to find my protractor.😀. I used a lot of bed frames to make things that are free at the local dump thay are very hard and strong but hard on drill bits. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks for this! I build one and it works super well! I never successfully sharpened any drills before, but it works now. I found that cutting the relief is most important. I made my jig so the sled has a grove and the bench grinder now has a channel to slide along.

Love it!! I've had a drill doctor for many years, don't use it because it's just too slow. I've got one grinder with wheels just for drills, but never have been able to get them consistently right. This is just too simple and too effective. I've got many dozens of bits which need to be sharpened at any given time. Putting a lip on the edge of the plywood to guide it at 90 degrees on the tool rest would help.

Thanks for writing Will. Glad that video helped. Sharp drill bits are a joy and dull ones are one of the most maddening thing ever. Do you know I have a Welding For Woodworkers series? Welding is easy and fun and does not take a big investment. Could be a good fit for your coasters. The beauty is that with welding steel can be used and reused and modified in a way wood can't. Anyway all the best with your roller coaster. It looks like a lot of fun to build. Allan

@AskWoodMan
@AskWoodMan 8 лет назад
+Peter Metaxas The problem with the fixed groove is that you are forced to use just one part of the grinding wheel so the result is either over wear in that one location or constant wheel dressing.
