Sharpening a Chisel in under a Minute | Paul Sellers

I see more and more options for sharpening a chisel and yet, with no mechanical means at all, I go from a chisel, I have dulled to surgically sharp in about a minute or less.
The fact is I never need to use a grinding wheel, and I was taught to sharpen by the masters of sharpening in my apprenticeship days 58 years ago which I have never strayed from because I found every other option too slow and, dare I say it, DULL and time consuming no matter which method or which machine!
Watch the video and see what you feel.

Been sharpening like this everyday since I learned it from you about 12 years ago. Haven't even tried other ways. It just works. Even if I have to take it to a wheel first to remove a chip, I'm right back on my 300, 600, 1000 and strop. Thanks for showing us again.

I personally have never used a jig to sharpen tools. (Though I kinda want one specifically for wood turning gouges, because I am quite lousy at sharpening them.) I just can't see a reason to use one for the majority of cutting tools. Chisels are so absurdly easy to sharpen, I can't say I've never had trouble with one. Sure they aren't dead square, but tell me the last time you needed a PERFECTLY square chisel. Knives, sharpening them has always been so easy, I could not imagine putting one in a jig.
@rauschguitars
@rauschguitars Год назад
@@autumn5592 Yes, once you realise that none of the tools really have to be dead square, then there's no point to using a jig!

Thanks for the how-to Paul! I always enjoy watching and learning from you! I'm a retired ironworker (46 years) who wants to learn relief and spoon wood carving. I now have a good basic set of gouges etc and all the right sharpening plates and strops. I'm getting myself set up in a spare room for this coming winter when I have to close my little shop until spring. I have designed some patterns like I do when I make whirligigs. It has been over 50 years since I was an art student. I have a nice collection of erasers now lol. Enjoyed,take care!
