I've used a ton of different sharpening setups throughout the years, but this one works the best for my shop. Shapton stones don't require soaking, so there's no need to wait or go to the sink.

Allen, I have just started performing my own plane and chisel sharpening. I have started with diamond stones. I intend on trying the water stones, especially the Shapton Ceramic water stones. I would like to have the plans to build the box you use as it would help in keeping the stones and guides in one place. A separate video showing how to build the box and boards to hold the stones. would also be nice.

I don't have plans, but I used the Samurai Carpenter's Japanese Tool Box / Sharpening Station video as inspiration. You should check it out since it's a very similar design.

Excellent video. I can see that I've been using too much water with my stones. Went out and tried it your way! Much better.

Great video; just ordered the 2000 and 8000 stones as well as an Atoma diamond plate

What liquid are you using on the stone? Is it just water? I love the setup you made! I have watched maybe 50 different sharpening videos and this is the best setup I’ve seen. Nice work!

Thanks Caleb. It’s just water.

Do you find the need or want to get the 8000 or is the 5000 plus a strop good enough?? Would love to see a video on how to build that box!

Allen, I’ve got a few high micron Shapton Glass Stones I use for my Japanese Chisels and for my O1 steel since they get freshened up very often. But I’m about to pull the trigger on a set of four of the Ha No Kuromaku stones for my A2/PMV-11 irons/chisels because I’m tired of dealing with the mess of soaking my current selection of cheap water stones. Getting these will make my entire system diamond, ceramic, and glass all a ‘spritz’ system. My only concern I guess is that these stones are rather narrow. So what’s your experience with sharpening wider irons like LAJ, No° 6, No° 7, Shooting plane, etc? Is it just that a little more concentration is require? Thanks, Shannon

What do you use for grinding out small nicks?
@nualln
@nualln 2 года назад
120 grit sticky-backed sandpaper on a very flat surface like plate glass. Go to 80 if it’s a really deep nick.
