Burr removal has been a big question for me. This is helpful. Now I’m kind of relating it to sharpening a card scraper. Is this right?

When I learned to sharpen a card scraper a lot fell into place about sharpening these turning tools. I also recommend Tomislav Tomasic (sp?) on RU-vid as a great teacher for use and sharpening turning scrapers.

I do it the opposite way. I flip the scraper upside down, and put the tool rest ten degrees below horizontal. I find it works the best. Please note that I have the Wolverine system

repeated trips to that grinder just to raise a burr sure will sell a lot of scrapers. Back when I was turning a lot I used a stationary mounted burnishing post to raise the edge in one swipe. After several times of this ya had to make a pass on the grinder but it is a quicker and less wasteful method for establishing a burr edge.

Hi Gary, the burnishing post method is fine and great for cabinet work. This method is much quicker than using a burnishing post and considering the burr will last for about 30 seconds of turning (with either method), you can be on and off the grinder in about 20 seconds and remove 0.002" of material. That's 500 sharpenings per inch and about 2000 sharpenings per tool. An average scraper will last a looong time.

I noticed you used the 80 grit side. Would a finer grit yield different results?

Good tips. I'll have to make my own jig.

Thanks for how to sharpen tools. Just started using standard tools, was using carbine tools only. 👍

I have changed my scraper sharpening. I use a diamond sharpener on top. This creates a burr on the face. I then use a cabinet scraper iron on the face to turn the burr up which now faces into the cut. Takes two minutes. Gets sharp as a razor.

how long does that scraping burr last compared to other cutting chisels? It seems to me that you have to be continually creating a new burr?

I've seen master wood turners sharpen after about 5 seconds.

If you aren’t sharpening your scraper frequently, it can’t do its job and results will be disappointing.
