If you mean the hammer, then you apply only minimal force, just enough to thin the blade of the scythe. The closer to the edge, the better. It doesn't matter if you're not always precise because by doing this repeatedly, you'll naturally maintain a thin and adequately jagged edge from the hammer taps. So, you just need to apply a bit more pressure than the weight of the hammer, ensuring you're not too light or too heavy, to avoid damaging the scythe.
