Quick sharpening session showing my current method for sharpening kanna for general finish planing. After each sharpening stage I took an image of the edge of the blade to show the results. Each photo shows an area of blade approximately 0.59mm wide. Roughly speaking the amount of magnification is similar to what the blade would look like viewed through a 400x microscope.
For a more thorough explanation of the sharpening method and photos please see my blog post here: www.bigsandwoo...

Nice video. I use a similar technique. I know alot people don't micro bevel japanese blades but when you want to sharpen quickly to get back to work it's a good way to go. I haven't hollowed grinded my blades but I don't see that effecting anything. Again, thanks for the post!

Thanks for your comment. There's a lot of skepticism regarding hollow grinding and micro bevels, particularly on Japanese blades. I was definitely skeptical as well, but after sharpening this way for a couple of years now, and having the opportunity to plane a lot of wood, I've definitely found this method to be really fast and consistent.

thank you so much for always posting just clearly descriptive videos. today i am particularly fascinated to see how close to the edge the corner of the first stone is used on the ura. a very elegantly refined layer to an entirely impressive and effective aproach.

Thanks Jude, glad you are enjoying these. It's far from a perfect technique but it's been really effective for getting a good edge fast.

Wow, so 400 -> 8000 -> 12000 and really only honing a micro bevel of what seems like about .2mm? That is pretty awesome. Is this more of a "work grade" sharpening, or similar to something you'd be doing to go for ultra thin shavings? Very interesting stuff.

Yeah the micro-bevel is pretty thin, and only only sharpened on the finish stones. I've been sharpening like this for work for quite a while now and it's been working out great. This sharpening style can also definitely be use for kezurou-kai but I'd probably put in a bit more effort to try to refine the edge some more. Using this method I've been able to pretty consistently get down to 10 microns, with pretty minimal sharpening effort. Breaking 10 microns though takes a bit more refinement I think.... but it's also not all about the blade. Looking forward to pulling some shavings together again some day!

Hello, thank you for this amazing video! Could you tell us, which lapping plate do you use to flatten your stone, please? Thanks in advance!

It's a Kensho brand lapping plate. I bought it here noborihamono.shop/shopdetail/000000000152/ct16/page1/recommend/

Back management getting more on edge?
@BigSandWoodworking

Ura maintenance is mainly to remove the rounded over part of the edge that forms on the ura side. Instead of grinding back a lot of the bevel, I often hit the ura side to re-establish a nice flat back. Also working off the stone helps to maintain the curvature of the back. Sometimes I used a 3000 stone instead of the 1000 I used in the video. Either work well. In this case the 1000 was close at hand so that's what I used. When I first learned to sharpen kanna, a lot of people said you should only hit the ura side on course stones if you're doing ura dashi or other heavy adjustments. Here in Japan, a lot of folks hit the ura side every time on 1000/3000 grit stones. So I've been doing that more and more. I think it gives a much more consistent quality edge. And I haven't noticed excessive wear on the ura side. All it takes is a light touch.
