A knife sharpened 20 degrees on each side won't cut? Thats a great edge for most knives. Durable edge and razor sharp. A 10 degree edge while sharp, will not hold up in use

Well, that also has to do with what did the blade look like when he started. Did he deliberately chew the blade up. And what did he deliberately do with a Sharpener to make the blade look worse. So are there some variables? Yep.

I bought one and have used it for a month now. I had a few questions about using it on my karambits when I first received it. When I called the tele number on the sharpener’s handle he really answered. He responded to texts also. Review: For me it’s the best sharpener I have. It’s effective and a good value. I’m comparing it to other sharpeners I have, the kind where I have to drag the blades through different sharpening slots. Do’s-Don’t do’s: Don’t put too much pressure downwards when you are resharpening an already nearly sharp blade. When the blade is almost ready only drag the sharpener across the blade edge with no downward pressure. The weight of the sharpener will be enough to finish it to razor sharpness. *If you use too much pressure you’ll only round the blade by forcing a lip on outer sides of blade. Take your time, many strokes with very light pressure. Do’s: Practice on some of your junk knives before using it on your $100 knife. Although it’s pretty intuitive to use you will need to learn how much pressure and correct angles to use when sharpening the blade. That one side that has the V sharpening slit is good to use first to reshape the edge. Be patient when sharpening. Remember, you can always take more off, but you can’t put more on.

I have to be honest here. I'm a wetstone and strop guy. Id never replace my wetstones and strop with a carbite sharpener. With that being said this particular sharpener looks pretty good. I may pick a couple of these up. One for my bug out bag and another for camping/backpacking. You dont really want to carry 2 or 3 wetstones in a ruck. This seems like a good lightweight option that doesn't take up a bunch of space.

Sad thing is the customer really does think his knives are ruined. When i first started learning how to sharpen I was terrible and thought I ruined a couple of the knives myself. The edge was so dull I was so frustrated sitting there for a couple hours trying to fix it. With enough practice and money spend on different sharpening systems I was finally able to consistently put a hair popping edge back on. So to anyone searching sharpening videos frustrated like I was dont give up and try different angles and apply different pressure. Eventually it will just click. Find what sharpening system works for you I personally am terrible at whetstones but can sharpen on a diamond stone and ceramic rod. But stay away from those electric sharpeners being able to sharpen by hand is a valuable and rewarding skill to have.

Carbide scrapers are fantastic for sharpening a firesteel. But they're also a horrible, horrible thing to do to a knife. Yes, they will remove steel. They will remove steel far, far too fast and in a chattery manner leaving all kinds of ugly scratches. Don't ever torture your blades by using one of these things. Also, 20 degrees to a side is certainly fairly broad, but if you have a *well* sharpened knife at 20 degrees per side, it will definitely cut. I don't doubt that it won't work if you use some carbide scraper horror show to do it though.

@@SharpensBest I somehow doubt you'd be thrilled to post videos of me using a Work Sharp Ken Onion edition on your page shilling cheap carbide sharpeners. 10 degrees per side is certainly a wicked sharp edge... and one that only premium blade steels are going to be able to hold for any length of time without rolling over. That's pretty steep for even AUS8 or 440C. It ought to be a crime to use a carbide sharpener on any knife more expensive than a Buck 110. If someone used one on my Sebenza, I'd have to start looking for a place to hide the body. Tell you what, why don't you send me one of your sharpeners for T&E? I'll be happy to post a video highlighting the kind of nasty damage they can do to an edge and what kind of work it takes to repair it with decent sharpening equipment. After several years of use and hundreds of sharpened objects- knives scissors, axes, wood planes, lathe tools, and lawn mowers my sharp- n-spark is still working perfect. My top tip is to pay attention to what Brad says and then get some old kitchen knives and get your technique sorted before destroying your treasured knives! You learn a lot and keep the wife happy with lovely sharp knives. In my humble opinion one possible area where misunderstanding may creep in is the initial perception of the simplicity of the design and Brads easy going, calm, light hearted nature and super slick skills that make him look like he is not trying! Don't let any of this fool you! The sharpener is a masterpiece of design, its simple looks cleverly hide some real inspired design. Brad is using real discipline in his technique, watch his hands carefully, his body position and where he is looking. The hardener has to be used with perfected technique and this comes from disciplined practice. As for Brads light hearted, comedic and sometimes slightly flippant style? Well he is a natural showman and entertainer and all the better for it! Practice practice practice!!!

I saw your demonstration at the last gun show in Honolulu, and this thing is great for a quick and dirty edge on dull knives or cheap steel. If that guy is thinking it would give a mirror polished edge on some super steel, and could whittle hair, he is just an idiot. It is a good design and serves a purpose, but it is not a KME, Lansky, or a Wicked Edge, and never will be. It will also never give the same result as a set of Japanese whetstones, worked down to 10,000 grit and finished on a leather strop with compound. He should just pay someone to sharpen his blades if he doesn't know what he is doing.

I've only seen a couple of Sharpens Best videos, so I'm not really qualified to judge this situation best, but from what I could see, the thing worked. I mean, it was a one cut video and the knife went from ripping through a bubble lined envelope, to CUTTING through the same envelope. Personally I just use a DC4 and a CC4 stone with a fine ceramic rod, and I got my pocket knife 🔪 back to shaving sharp. That's 40 strokes each blade side, on four stone sides plus a rod, and takes about the same amount of time Sharpens Best brought back the kitchen blade in with his one sharpener edge. So, I would consider that proof it works.

Don't know how this ended up on my recommended watch list, I sharpen with whetstones, depending on the needs, I typically use a 400g > 1000g > 2000g > 5000g > 10,000g > lapping films starting at 1 micron > .5 micron > .1 micron > strop with a .1 micron paste, then bare leather. This is just showing off really, it changes dramatically depending on the use of the knife, my cutlery doesn't go that far, otherwise you'll lose the bite they need. This tool will never attain an edge better than a 1000g, whether it's stone, diamond, glass, whatever. This tool however is perfect for having it with you at all times, and bringing an edge back to functional again. I may have all the stones, pastes/compounds, strops, etc., but you'll never find anyone who regularly cares any of it with them. That being said, there are some other nice options that are slightly bulkier, but come with a couple of diamond plates, ceramic honing rods and a leather strop, which would perform better than a singular tungsten carbide sharpener. But the layman doesn't care about all that, this is a much simpler, cheaper, and space-friendly option. TLDR: People just need to temper their expectations of what this is capable of, it's not going to out-perform even a solo 1000g stone if you know what you're doing, it requires far less technique and almost no maintenance, but still has a learning curve.

I think most who are disappointed are not aware that this sharpener is made for a very specific angle of point. It isn’t a one stop answer to sharpening all knifes, and would not be right for something with a strong bias like a chefs knife. It is a great tool for something like a pocket or utility knife that is used often and therefore the blade constantly needs attention.

Could you possibly put a little bit of plastic like a nub towards the handle that would let you glide the nub over the flat part of the blade to force a 10° angle all the time? Because if you could make some sort of guide built in like that I feel it would go a long way to help people not destroy thier own blades from not using it correctly.

As for someone saying your product ruined they’re knife that’s completely ridiculous because even a damaged edge can be repaired if that’s the case.

There is a risk of getting shatter marks or waves on to the edge when scraping with tungsten carbide. It's ok for survival purposes but i would always prefere stones to a tungsten carbide scrape.

Generally, these tungsten carbide sharpeners do work but offer marginal improvements, i.e. good for a really bad, dull, damaged edge. Specifically the V-cutter, which is good for establishing the correct 21-degree angle. (10.5 degrees on each side). is useful, but doesn't usually provide the sharpness to cut paper. This is the first sharpener I've seen that offers a flat, 90-degree tungsten edge, but when he's using it's supported on his leg, with the edge facing up, with his hand really close to the blade as he strokes back and forth. I have a V-sharpener that has a course and fine cutter but is made so the edge of the knife points down, so the hands are not in the cutting path of the blade edge. With people used to working with knives, I don't see it as a problem so much, but with general distribution, many people ordering the device don't have the skill level. We see that all the time with firearms. I think these devices are made in bulk by the manufacturer, many times in China. So, any complaints or requests for refunds because of lost parts can easily be made with no questions asked. I would imagine that most customers are happy with their purchase and have no problems. I can't really comment on the effectiveness of using the flat, 90-degree edge to hone the blade, but it seems to be effective to hone the edge. I don't think it's necessary to make a video disparaging the user, but possibly just make one on how to properly use the sharpener. I think you are right, that most people try to sharpen at a 90-degree total angle.

cathode follower it doesn’t work that great. They act like it’s a miracle sharpener. Put under a microscope you will probably see a jagged edge that cuts. But not like a factory edge. Ceramic sticks and leather restore the edge far better than this. If the edge is destroyed, then this tool will help.

Yes, its operator error. I just bought a Sharpal all in one, and this thing is amazing. Your tool is a better one for camping and outdoors, with the fire starter. But I watched their video three times before using it, and then when I used it, I got better as I sharpened different blades and tools.[Saw many videos of people that were demonstrate how to use it, that were plain wrong. My skill level gets better every time I use it. After three days of owning this sharpener, I now have razor sharp shears, scissors, kitchen, steak and table knives, meat cleavers and tree loping tools, and its so easy to create the edge, with a few pulls through the sharpener, a maximum of 6 pulls. not the many strokes you show. But you have to pay attention to the angles. You need to build your skill level.

I dunno man it just seems like a gimmick. There are plenty of knife sharpeners in this style with the tungsten carbide and a v-notch (and for a lot cheaper price). I've used a few but I'll always use a DC3 and it's still holding up.

Won't cut at 45° on each side but yet your sharpener cuts your nail at the same degree? does that make your nail-cutting test pointless? also, you can have a blade that is a square and it will cut paper like a razor if and I stress if, the blade thickness after the squared off point is thin, very thin. think .08 thin

I agree that those types of sharpeners are not great but you can absolutely sharpen a knife with one. Specific steels will have better edge retention at a specific angle rather than if you put the same edge on every steel. I have knives at 20 and 25 dps that are shaving sharp. Now those are pocket knives that recieve more abuse. A kitchen knife should be at it's greatest angle like 17 degrees per side. You want a finer edge for meat, fruits, or vegetables. a razor sharp blade with 25 dps will still cut just not as cleanly. The edge will also last longer at 25 dps. Every steel is different though you kinda gotta know what steel you have and what kind of edges you can put on it. Some steels won't sharpen unless you're in the right range of angles.
