In this episode, they wanted the larger Neg'Var to work with the model of the Defiant they already had, but since it would have been quite expensive to build the entire ship, they merely built the bottom of it. And indeed, that really is all we ever see when the Defiant is going in close.
AND, because they were too close, the targetting sensors were having a hard time locking on, since those sensors are designed more to target ships that're away. For a ship that close, they might as well be using interior sensors or something.
its because, this episode was one of those which played in the mirror universe. The Klingons and the Cardassians have an strong alliance which controlls the entire quadrant. Humans or Terrans are a thrid-class-race in this universe. So the Defiant is the first ship of their rebellion against the alliance. This storyline has its root in the TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror." - hope i could help a bit. mfg
@DannyEastes I know. DS9 budget limitations... 3 main issues with this sequence: 1- completely disproportional sizes: suddenly the Defiant become the size of a shuttle and the Negvar became like a Star Wars super destroyer. 2 - What would be the point of having those massive disruptor cannons if they just dont do any damage? 3 - The smaller ships simpli fly inside the big ship shield area.... makes no sense. You never saw a shuttle getting between Enterpsise nacelles like that.
Good job Sisko! Fly around and through the station putting the civvies inside in danger from stray phaser shots and photorps. Big ships with beam weapons. Babylon 5 got it right, both in the cinematography and feeling of mass and energy. They set the standard as one can see in Episdoe 3's beginning battle, not to mention any number of cinema sequences from games. Treks big ships with beam weapons? Well the big part looks cool....the beam weapons? Not so much. Nothing awesome about them.
It's a Peregrine-class Federation Attack Fighter, or the Mirror Universe version thereof. The Maquis got their hands on some in the main universe, but Chakotay's ship wasn't the same class.
I've been watching Trek for 35 years. A beam weapon by any other name is still a beam weapon. T.V. Trek space battles paled in comparison to Babylon 5's because they could just never get the "making really big ships fighting FEEL like really big ships fighting" part down. B5 set the modern standard, again. Even Star Wars Episode 3 had large ships using beam weapons ala' B5 style. Ditto for about a jillion games from Homeworld to Freespace.
The Negh'var class Battlecruiser is something else. Even with all of the pounding from the defiant it was still able to go to warp. I think thats quite a feat really. Its too bad the defiant didn't finish the job.
The battle sequences for this episodes were beautiful, with the ships flying in and outside the docking ring. One problem, though. Shouldn't Terok Nor's shields be up? If so, all the ships should be bouncing off the station's shields.
@Ahkinum I believe they used the same FX model, but on very crazy scales (yes, DS9 is kinda inconsistent on ships sizes). A fighter should be like a runnabout in size. If you think that Chakotay's crew was composed of dozens, at least enough to compensate for all Voyager personal lost in the firts episode... oh well.
This was the most epic space battle seen yet on Star Trek. Very Star Wars like in so many ways. It was pretty badass seeing it the first time, and still looks friggin awesome. It made the Defiant the most badass ship in Star Trek period as well.

Well, it's something like this: 1) obtain the raw video, usually by ripping it from DVD. 2) Edit it using any one of the programs out there, i.e. Windows Movie Maker. 3) Post on RU-vid. 4) Profit? That's about it. :)
@williamskidfears I know, but remmember how she needed get autorization to pass through the shields? No way she would get there without the crew consent.
Jesus you guys have done your research, i still feel better than you guys as I know the reality is the power of all these ships, their weapons, sheilds, engines and even the size, all changes tosuit the plot of whatever episode we are watching, need the defiant to be vulnerable? its vulnerable. Need the defiant to be the most amazing ship in Starfleet? you got it!
yeah yeah... a defiant class damaging a klingon Negh'var class... bird of prey okay, vor'cha's maybe... but a negh'var... No... just no.... It's like having a dragon (the horse rider with the carbine) taking down a M60 Hellcat tank.
That smaller ship, trailing Defiant, looked like Chakotay's maquis raider ship. I've seen a few of the DS9 episodes, but not this one, does anyone know the name and is it viewable at like amazon or someplace? Thanks:O)
The Galor an Negh'var look much better on paper as drawings than as physical studio models and that just makes me sad. And there you got those pyramid disruptor emitters on the Galor that the FX guys never attempted to use. The DS9 series lacked the graceful aesthetic qualities of earlier TREK designs.
@alucard624 I admit it was cool. But try to imagine if you were cheering up for the Klingon vessel: A dreadnough, with a crew of hundreds, with cannons bigger than the opposing ship, honestly... would that battle have made any sense to you? As to the Star Wars factor: you are right, clear influence, to the point of completely ignoring shields and making the klingon vessel a sitting duck (no maneuver at all).
@jock3l I never liked the Mirandas, but the excelsior is my favourite of all the ships in star trek. I think if they make another series of star trek it should be on the enterprise B.
NightwishRaven999 - If you believe the Miranda to be useless, I challenge you in Klingon Academy for the PC. Get it, and we'll see how useless a Miranda is, even set up against an Excelsior-class. I can use a Federation Fast Frigate in KA, which only has 2 phaser banks and 2 photon banks, and take out an Excelsior. As for anyone else who wants to get in on the KA action, send me a message and I'll provide the torrent, which I uploaded.
