Today we're throwing it back to Aspen 2012, and Shaun White. Snowboard SuperPipe has just finished, and for the first time in X Games history, White has been awarded a perfect score of 100, which also meant his fifth X Games gold medal. Here, Shaun joins Selema Masekela to discuss his run, the perfect score, and while he's always remember this particular X Games.

How do you get a 100 while touching hands on landing the last trick? Not hating at all he’s an amazing athlete but a 100 should almost be unattainable in my opinion.

One note on the score...I agree that it wasn’t a perfect run and shouldn’t have been given a 100, but the score doesn’t actually matter in snowboard judging. The scores are just a tool to rank from first to last. To get the highest score just means you had the best run of that contest. In other words, a 98 in one contest might be a 85 in another. The judges only gave him that score because he was the last rider to drop and his run was the best of the day. It was the media who generally advertised it as a perfect run.

Shaun's the best there is, and that was a sick run, but a score of 100 means that if you went after him, and went even bigger, added an extra 180 to everything, you still won't beat him. judges should always leave a little room. And he actually pivoted into a lot of his landings, coming up short on rotation by a few degress. always room for improvement. lol like I can do a single trick from his run.

Agree, and he touched hands on the last landing. Perfect score shouldn’t exist anyway

I would assume that the perfect overall score is a composite of multiple judges’ independent scores and therefore the odds of getting a perfect 100 are extremely low, but I could be wrong.

He’s also a habitual boot grabber that wouldn’t be tolerated by judges nowadays. He’s still the gnarliest tho

That’s the thing... no one else in that comp could do some of the tricks he did and they definitely couldn’t add an extra 180, and he did those tricks that they couldn’t even do in a line... so for that comp and that time period, it was a 100.... no one could do better

@@va4114 that could be true, and he was the last one of the night. I think a 99.99 should be like an unspoken rule of sports in general. The 100, or any perfect score in any event, will always take away from future competitions. It ads the impression that it would always win.

I met him when he was 16 yo... Next morning I attempted to just follow him on 17' pipe 😂😂😂. I was barely scratching at the top, while he was flying like a friggin kite in front of me... A bit of magic...

isn’t it so cool that snowoard superpipe peaked in 2012? I mean if this run is a perfect 100, what’s the point of progression if no other run in the history of snowboarding will be as perfect as this?

Sports like this aren’t judged based on whatever might be possible in the future; they’re judged on what athletes are capable of at the present time. To do otherwise would make no sense.
