You've heard this a gazillion times, but you might have never bothered to learn it. I'll walk you through it. I'm playing my trusty Recording King RK-R35
Mr. Panky. I'm an ol' fat 57 year old Missouri Ozark Hillbilly that hasn't had his 5 String out in over 2 years. I retired after 21 years of military service. I lost intrest in everything I liked doin' after a couple a combat tours in Iraq. Well Sir, you just caused me to dig my banjo out... tomorrow (middle of the night right now). I'm gonna start pickin' again thank you very much. And I'm gonna watch the rest of your videos and pick up all the stuff I stepped over back when.
After 10 beginner banjo lessons, 10 back up banjo lessons, 5 what to learn next tunes countless hours of practice and I have finally managed to have my first shave and a haircut. You were right, You can do it! Thank you :-)
Thanks again Jim, another mystery solved. I watch players end with these cool finishes and am super happy to add a basic tag and finish to my skill set. looking forward to building on it.
He's that teacher whose class you wanted to go to when YOUR REGULAR TEACHER WAS ABSENT & students were divi'd up amongst several other teachers. (I'm a late 70s baby so in the 80s that's what schools did most of the time instead of getting a sub) lol *the way he bends down to 👀 at the camera tho 👍🏼 🤣😂🤣
Hi Jim ...68 this month and just learning to roll..saw ur vids n said that's what I need...ur awesome...thanx for teaching un dummies out here..lol...anyway I wanna learn the old grand ol opry Martha White theme song......shore would appreciate it.....
Thanks Jim, really like the tag before the shave 'n a haircut. Keeps it simple but neat. I spend a lot of time with this but generally bend the strings. Definitely going to try out the pinch.
Way to drive a rabbit crazy.! "you can look up two bits ... " I see the wheels turning: "well, maybe not. you'll find other two bit things" Thanks for another fun one to try.
Just been inspired to work the ending out for Banjolele (for those who Banjolele too) ….. it’s an easy translate, starting out on the ‘A’ with a 1st to 2nd slide, ‘E’ 3rd 3rd Open 3rd, back the ‘A’ to finish with 9th, 10th. So glad I found your channel last year. You make learning a joy. May god keep you safe and healthy 😊😎👍‼️
Hey thats cool stuff! I just got myself another banjo after 10 years of not having one. Found this video because I can't remember how to do the shave and a haircut. Will practice the different variations you show here. Thanks and have a great day!
Jim Pankey i can't began to tell you how much your video lessons have helped me.Thank you so very much. I play steel and fiddle every now and then with a guy that knows you named Jonathan Massengale.
Thanks for that, my fingers were getting tired from playing and not having a ending... :) As a old blues guitar player, the last two 1/8 notes can also be a ninth chord pinched on the forth then fifth fret for that silly blues guitar ending because yeah I like to surprise people. Thanks for the lesson!
This is great! I think it would be great to learn so extended versions like Roy clark did. If you ever would consider it I would be so thrilled! Thank you! I love your lessons!
Jim on that rk 35 I was telling you about sounded terrible past 7th. Fret. Well I watched your video on the dirty 30 s banjo you set up I did what you said. I moved the bridge back. It was way out of wak it sounds great now I payed 500 for it on ebay just like new. Thanks Jim, I've learned a lot off your Videos. Even fixing banjos. Keep them coming
Oh, I always figure it's better for more banjo and less of my face. It's kinda fun to lean over and look into the camera. :) Glad you like the humor... didn't realize I was funny until folks started commenting. :)
Hi Jim! First of all, thank you so much, you made me sweep the dust off my banjo and helped me decide to actively practice more and I've been following your tutorials for the past month with more than an hour of practice every day! I'm amazed by the progress! You are an amazing teacher. I have a question regarding the initial tag. More precisely, regarding the part with the transition on the third string from the 3rd fret to the 2nd fret. In this video, you do it with a pull-off, while in some other video you do it with a slide. I was wondering what are the pros/cons to it? Do you prefer one over the other? Does the pull-off sound more "tangy" to you? Thank you so much!
I was changing a distributer lastnight with my friends...There was a loong minute long silence.... I had to break the silence somehow....... "....................................SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT! TWO BITS!!!!!!" We laughed for like an hour about that lol
Thanks Jim. That was a fantastic little lesson!! By the way, I have a Recording King R20 Banjo and I love it. It's a great banjo for a very reasonable price.
I have really enjoyed your banjo lesson videos. The way that you teach, breaking the songs down into easy to swallow chunks has enabled even my clumsy fingers to learn most of the moves. Thank you for that. One question though; is it possible to get hold of the music tabs with lyrics for the three songs that you are teaching in your videos? Many thanks Phil. Devon, U.K.
I don’t offer any tabs for my beginner series. I feel like it’s important to just play... kids don’t learn to talk by reading, pickers should learn to play by imitating first. As for words... there’s a ton of that online.
Thank you Mr Pankey, a very useful and entertaining video. I will definitely be using this, but the UK version: "Shave and a hair cut, five bob". (A bob was slang for a shilling; 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to £1. This currency disappeared when UK went metric in the early 1970's).
I can remember as a schoolboy walking into Worcester for a haircut. Cost me half a crown. I was too young to need a shave, but I guess it would have come to five bob. What style of haircut? Well it was the early 1960's so it had to be a Beatle cut
I have no plans of doing a dvd. You can always sign up for RU-vid premium and download the videos. But if you can comment, then you must be able to watch the videos. I have no plans to take any of them down.
Hey Jim, been learning this, this week thank you. Can i ask, once you get up to the 9th fret and further the strings seem a lot higher from the fret board and so make fingering less accurate. is this a sign of a cheap banjo (i'm still playing my starter banjo)?
Might just need some adjustment, but the strings do kinda get a little higher the further you travel up the neck. I generally like mine to be about 1/8" above the 12th fret.
@@JimPankey Truth is , Because of You I am playin so well now that at this point even I'm afraid of gettin' Shot at ... Now that's a Joke Sir ! LoL Thank You for the Lessons so Far , I'll keep on lookin' as long as you keep on pickin'
Is there a tab for this somewhere? For whatever reason, I am having a heck of a time following this one (the tag)... I'm not even looking past that. You say pinch at the beginning, and I assume that was a 1 5 pinch with your finger on the 2nd fret of the 1st string, but then you slide to the fifth... pinch again with 1 5? Then I am completely lost after that. I hear 5-2-5-1-2-3-1 I think with a pull off someplace. (And that's the "easy part" you say... LOL... I guess Brain Surgery is easy too after you do it a few times).
There’s no tab. Some things are worth figuring out without having the tab. However, at 02:30 I break it down but by bit. Don’t hesitate to use RU-vid’s slowdown feature.
@@JimPankey Thanks... I didn't know there was a slow down feature. I will have to figure that out and see if that helps. Maybe this is just too advanced for me at this stage too though, but I would love to do that shave and a hair cut bit,
Okay, so the tag looks a bit like that lick we do in the first half of cripple creek. What I can't figure out is what you are doing between the open 1 string and the pull-off. It sounded like you said 2, but I don't think you mean string .... 2nd fret of the 3rd string and then pull off on the 3rd fret I think.... but it actually sounds like you hit the third fret and then do the pull off.
Your playing sounds so amazing! I wish I could learn that version of Cripple Creek. It seems like it has some differences from the one you teach, but maybe I'm just not playing it right! For instance, the part where it's alternating the hammering between 3 and 4, it seems like your 4 has a second bass note that wasn't shown in the lesson. But I could have just learned it wrong! Thanks for all of your hard work and wisdom, Jim. I really, really appreciate it.
Whenever I improvise I’m always messing with little things like that. Be sure to check out the Cripple Creek Expansion Pack video I posted. It’ll get you started finding places to modify. :)
I (“he”) actually explain note by note and tell you which left and right fingers to use. Not sure how to say the frets and right hand fingers any clearer…..
Jim Pankey thanks for the reply. I’ve found the answer in your Foggy Mountain Breakdown video (i was talking about the intro). If you take requests I would really appreciate if you could make a video on how to play this song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z0XR5SqGLXg.html
Mr. Pankey, I love your videos, but sometimes you go too fast for me! I’m brand new at this and I’m kind of a slow learner! Sometimes I need one note at a time! 😊
All videos I have aren’t for beginners and I don’t go note by note. Spend more time on the beginner series and really learn to apply everything there. If you’re still bound and determined to tackle things that may be beyond your ability, don’t hesitate to use RU-vid’s slowdown feature.
@@JimPankey Thanks! I didn't know there was a slow down feature. I will check that out! I still love your videos! You're the best! - My dad gave me his banjo because he can't play anymore and I'm trying to learn to play so he won't be sorry he gave it to me! It's a beautiful Bacon. :-)
Be quiet. He's nice enough to teach this stuff for free, and you have the audacity to complain about how he does it? Go learn it and do it yourself if it bugs you that bad, and until then sod off.
