Here is a vintage shaving kit that I made out of an Altoids style tin. Paying homage to the early years of safety razor shaving and the shaving kits that became popular among soldiers and travelers alike. The might not be the perfect kit for you but hopefully will give you some ideas if you do decide to build one yourself:) Thanks for watching:)

Okay, it is 8 years from the original post. I just stopped by to let you know that I admire the design of this case (in particular, the blades bank!). Now I'm working on a blueprint for my own razor travel case inspired by your piece of design. Thanks for sharing the idea and its implementation!

Wow! I am beyond blown away. Mini brush, Alum block, Mirror, Blade Bank! Talk about getting the most in a small package. Very creative and ingenious! I am honored to be partially responsible for this. I really liked this video. Great job!

I've made a lot of things out of Altoid tins I thought were clever, even a travel shaving kit. Never have I made anything to this level, absolutely blown away with all the thought and detail. I submit, crying 'uncle', you win! Thanks for sharing this!

For a true military flavour use brushed polished steel as your mirror. Soldiers weren't allowed glass in the field as glass will shatter if there's an explosion nearby, where as you can simply bend steel back into shape!

Great idea! Got me inspired to build my own version. But I will make a bigger one for regular travel. Love the old Gillette travel shaving kits from the 30's. Got everything except the container and my choice of razor. I use a 1962 L1 Gillette Slim or a Fatip Grande razor on a daily basis. The Fatip is a aggressive razor, muh more so then even the Slim on setting 9. I get a better shave with the Fatip but if I use it too many days in a row I get razor burn. Which Is why I still use the Slim a couple times a week. As I want to limit the kit to one razor I might just get a medium aggresive razor like the Merkur Slant for the kit. I would love to use a vintage razor in the kit so a 1950's Red tip Super Speed might fit the bill as well. For the brush I have the Omega Bigger Bambino. Great little boar brush, fits inside one of the small perscription bottles perfectly.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 8 лет назад
+titan90000 thanks titan! I have plans to do another kit and a travel brush holder soon… your setup sounds really cool… I like the looks of the fatips but just have never tried them. I do have a merkur 1904 OC that is probably the closest to the fatip and I like it a lot. But that's the problem… too many awesome choices and not enough time..lol! Thanks for watching:) Joe

Very clever. I'm thinking that one could alter the hanging hook to be able to double as a prop leg for table-top (flat rock top) use. Brilliant shave stick slices. That chip brush is probably horsehair. Does it shed?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 8 лет назад
+Mr. Chartier Yes, it does shed and I've only used it twice, just to make sure it could work.... but certainly much better lather with a real brush though...lol! And thats a great idea for the prop leg too! Joe

What does the blade bank catch look like inside ?
@sheamkeener
@sheamkeener 7 лет назад
I really want to make something similar. Could you do a video showing the blade bank and how you get the blades to stay in without rattling, cause I'd like to know.
@jrdn.lauren
@jrdn.lauren 7 лет назад
Shea Keener . he got a thin flat piece of springy metal. the screw pushes the metal spring and scrunches it like a bow or leaf spring. as he inserts the old blade, the spring pushes the blade down against the bottom. releasing the screw releases tension on the leaf spring and loosens the old blade.

Do you have an image of how you did the aluminum from the inside that holds the blades down? That was genius.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 8 лет назад
+Valencia Theadore Hi Valencia! I don't but I do want to do another version of this but with a smaller tin... if so then I'll make sure to show a clip of it. But for a short answer... the piece of aluminum (from a soda can) is bent in an "L" shape with the short edge flush to the inside of the tin and connected to the nut/bolt combo. The long side, lays flat against the bottom to hold the blades tight when they are inserted. Hope the explains it a bit better at least:) Joe

Hector, I think it is about 2.5 x 4". Almost identical dimensions to the altiods tin. I get mine from specialtybottle co. Ricos Corner Hey Rico, I REALLY like the King R. Emporium soap a lot. It's hard to describe the scent but it's more on the subtle side and just a clean, classic, manly smell. And speaking of which... I'm actually headed up to Phoenix tomorrow and am going to see if I can make some time to swing by the Razor Emporium and pick up the 8oz tin of the soap. Got a busy schedule but this soap is worth it for sure!
