Great trip. Be sure to check out part 2, the best part is on there. Thank you for inviting me, planning the trip, and putting up with me. Can’t wait for the next one

Looks like a good start to the trip! Setting the rainbow up in 'porch mode' helps with airflow and getting in and out of tent in overhead rains. Also, tarptent sells a liner for the rainbow that helps create a barrier from the condensation.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
Honestly it's too small for me to add the liner and be comfortable with it. I think the only real answer if I am going to do tents is to get a real double wall for winter. I slept the last night with everything wide open and it was still covered in condensation.
@OutdoorOperator

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I gotcha, I use the double rainbow personally. The stratospire is bomber, comes in low stretch silpoly and you can get a (mostly) solid interior for winter use. Tons of space. They also make a dcf version.

Agree with you man. Hammock easier to deal with for the most part. But tent is way lighter and sometimes more fun
@SpiguyverBackpacking1

I think for the weather I was in, a double walled tent is the only way to go.

Love the Shawangunk ridge trail! Day hiked sections of it, but you'll love doing it as a thru hike. It starts off ok but as you go further north the scenery gets more dramatic and beautiful. You have the basha kill wildlife refuge and eventually the Shawangunk ridge. One of most favorite areas to hike in NY. Dramatic cliffs, mountain views, and forests of dwarf pine trees.

Thursday will be the rest of the trail. It's an amazing trail during the section you're talking about, very cool!

It was just the condensation that killed me on this trip. Warmer temps it’s good, but for winter if I’m gonna tent it needs to be double walled.

Looks like a great trip! Now solo I hammock, or tarp and bivy but with my wife I tent and it's SilPoly all the time and your experience is why. I also, for the time being, am okay with the extra weight of a double walled tent so condensation is less of an issue.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
Yup, the extra weigh in winter is well worth it!

@Spiguyver Backpacking is this the same trail you ran into a few trips ago? You were going to look into it, I think?
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
So it runs concurrently with the NJ/NY Long Path for about 40 miles I believe. We hit the Long Path shortly into NY and it runs about mid way through Lake Minnewaska State Park where they separate again. I'm going to discuss a lot of this during the Live Stream on Friday night

Great vid Mark and Rainman! Glad to see you get out for a few days. Just what I need myself; I've been in a funk lately and not very energetic. Winters do that to me by the time February rolls around here in New York. Looks like Rainman is sporting the Ridge Outdoors hammock. Ever since your video I bought one and replaced the internal ridgeline and suspension and it has been my favorite budget hammock. I sure hope you soak in the much needed mental rejuvination from this trip. It sure is great to do solo trips but so much nicer to be able to share adventures with a buddy sometimes as well. Looking forward to the next parts of your trip. Jeff

Thanks, it was great to get out. Actually Rainman was in a Dream Hammock Sparrow, but the Ridge is a nice one as well.

I am surprised to see you in a tent but a single wall one seems to always have condensation issues. I see a lot of good comments on the Durston 2P
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
During summer or warmer temps single wall can work, but when it’s colder it’s just a condensation nightmare!

Great video! Looking forward to part two. I’m a hammock guy for all uses…except in a tent you can sprawl gear out inside. I need to get some tent experience, plan is to do A.T. In ‘25, by tent. Rick

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I go back n forth. I asked Frozen a few times, knowing what he knows now, what would he take. He leaned towards tent due to what I said. I’ll need much more experience with both to decide. May end up using both, due to Feb start plan.

Funny I was experiencing some of the same issues going with tents lately. I really like 1P tents for some reason and want to take the Vik 1 out again. I think I got the roll out of the side door technique down now haha. Or I'll have my Helinox Chair Zero set up nearby so I can use it to prop myself up. It's not so bad since I'm a small dude. I've been wanting to go out for a hang too so maybe I'll take both on my next trip. Looks great out there. Quite a contrast to the west. Also I just picked up a UCO Mini Lantern Candle and love it. I noticed a lot of UK wild campers use it to help reduce condensation in the tent so I'll give it try.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
Actually I did use the UCO Candle Lantern a lot when I used to use a tent when I lived in CA and it helped for sure, but I also always used double wall tents.
