Amazing! The gunks are really spectacular and diverse. Really cool seeing it covered in snow as well. Definitely challenging with the rock scrambles and cliffs. Glad you had an awesome trip!

Thanks, it was a great one, and an area I want to explore a lot more in the warmer weather!

SPECTACULAR! I really loved this! Winter brings out the beauty of things in an entirely different manner. I think those were cat prints! The trail through the cave and crevasses was astounding. All those rock formations! Did you happen to keep your water filter inside your clothing the entire time? You guys were smiling BIG TIME at the end! Thanks for the fabulous trip guys! Jeff

Thanks Jeff! They were cat prints, we saw quite a few cat prints in that area. We did have our filters in our pockets or stored away in insulation except when being used, they never froze. The cave was a totally new one for me, as if that wasn't obvious by my reaction!

That was an awesome hiking. I did part of same trail last fall (late October and early November) in reverse direction. Started from Rosendale to Ellenville in 3 sections, and I totally agree with you, the best section is between Minnewaska and Sam's Point. I also missed the cave near Rainbow falls, and crossed the stream that feeds Verkeerderkill Falls after dark. The scenery on top of the ridge is just pure breathtaking!

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I guess I’m the odd guy… really don’t watch to many gear videos, (unless it’s from a favorite ch) but love a good trip video….but I don’t watch much “regular” TV. I’d much rather see the new gear as it’s used on the trail, instead of someone’s backyard.

Really impressed with this trail. Nice camerawork as well. Had no idea NJ had trails like this!

That is the kind of trip I love. I had a similar trip in ANF last February 2022. I timed getting there just after the ice storm ended and it turn back to snow. I was the only one out in it and the deadly beauty is unparalleled. And Micro-spikes for the win!

@SpiguyverBackpacking1 sorry, Allegheny National Forest. It's southeast of Lake Erie. So that area is affected by a weather pattern referred to as lake effect snow. There can be a lot of snow in that area. When the weather is right.

Awesome trip and an awesome couple of videos. The Gunks are a great and beautiful place to hike but I've never done them in the winter....you've inspired me to give it a try next year. :-)

Thanks! Yeah, it was nice out there. I will say if it was a tougher winter I don't know that we would have chosen this trip!

You haven’t really hiked the Gunks until your trail goes into a cave. A lot of the ridge is accessible by a network of carriages roads that are pretty easy to hike. However, the SRT is cleverly routed to traverse some of the most infamous footpaths.

The Shawangunk Ridge from Lake Awosting to Lake Monhonk is not really a true wilderness. Mountain resort hotel built up a network of carriage roads to create a rich persons playground. Only they most rugged trails were not built up into gravel roads. The ridge was hunted by the indigenous residents for millennia before the arrive of Europeans. There are footpaths that date back to that time.

Hey guys awesome video! I live right near high point and my girlfriend and I are getting into backpacking so we’re thinking of doing this as the first big trip! I had a few questions, no pressure on answering. 1. Why do it in winter? That’s all I see online 2. Is the trail marked well and is AllTrails enough to navigate it with? 3. Did you pack out all your food or were you able to hit some town and gas stations? 4. Would this be a good first timers trip? Thank you for the content and hopefully you can answer some of those for me!
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
Hey, thanks for watching! To answer your questions: 1. I just moved to NJ in October and this was when Kris was able to come out for a hike, it was all about when we had the time available. 2. For the most part the trail is marked really well. AllTrails has 2 spots we found where it actually has you follow a side trail rather than the actual trail, which may add a couple mile to the overall but isn't a problem. 3. We carried all our food for the trip. 4. Honestly I would suggest doing something else as a first trip. Check out some of my videos from either Harriman State Park, where you could link up a nice loop hike, or some of the Appalachian Trail videos I've got from along the AT not far from High Point. Feel free to ask any questions you've got!

Nice man thankyou! Yeah for a first trip something smaller would probably be better… there’s a 30 mile trail by me that’s pretty flat along the Delaware that we’re going to try. My main concern is that my injuries from when I was younger are gunna keep me from doing the kind of miles I wanna do. Broke my back when I was 19 and messed up my knee during covid but never went to the doctor….. knees actually feeling good lately but iv been hiking and walking every single day

Awesome video. Did you go through Spring farm? I only ask because I’m training for the SRT race in September. I’m curious if you had to pay to enter.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Год назад
I honestly don’t know where Spring Farm is. We did not have to pay for any of the areas we ended up hiking. You do have to have a membership or pay for Mohonk, but when we went through we did not have to pay.

They had a shot of Bonticou Crag, so they would have entered the Mohonk Preserve along High Peter’s Kill Footpath between Compass Rock and the Lost City Escarpment. High Peter’s Kill Footpath ends at the Coxing Trailhead on Clove Road. From there, the SRT follows Old Minnewaska Trail and Undivided Lot trail over to the Spring Farm Trailhead. Usually, there is a $15 fee for hiking in the preserve. They may waive the fee for through hikers on the SRT. Unless they entered on a weekend, there would be no-one at Coxing or Spring Farm to collect the fee anyway.

@@kentgoldings thanks for the info! I ended up buying the annual pass to be safe. I ran quite a few times on the weekdays, and you’re right, there is no one manning the stations during the week.
