MOST UNDERRATED MUSICIAN EVER. Shawn Lane was indeed a genius even more than a genius, his technics on guitar and keyboard are just unreal, his understanding of music is also unreal. He was taken way before his time, guys like him are always gone too soon. we just have to be thankful that about every century or so we get a person like him that makes human kind look a little better. too bad that most ppl are idiots who are not able to appreciate this music and understand its greatness.
I dont understand why people find it fun to call my Brother fat ass and make light of his death etc. To say he looks arrogant etc....... Dont you people realize how hurtful it is to his friends and family??? Shawn took meds for his arthritus that made him have a weight problem. There was absolutely nothing arrogant about him as a matter of fact, he did not think he was special at all. Most of you never met him. I mean, like him or not but don't be insulting. Its cruel!!!!!!
Hi Mitzi I remember taking that picture of you the night we saw the best cover band for pink Floyd and partied in the limo with Rockwell and Friends ..leave the mental midgets by the way side where they belong ...Shawn is a blessing for all time for those of us that are humble and therefore worthy ...Love you always
The most amazing musician ever. I can't see how there can ever be another like him. The more I watch and even try to learn some of the things he does the more I'm amazed at how great Shawn Lane was.
the reason why i love watchin this guy so much is cause he is SO into his music, RELENTLESS PASSION. its some of the most genuine music you can ever hear...straight from the heart
he also could read 1-2 books a day, retain most of the information, and not only play piano and guitar, but play BOTH simultaneously while also singing/scatting each note, and all of that is just the tip of the iceberg. I believe shawn lane was a savant on some levels, and either had a more evolved cerebral cortex or just better access to it. He is an exemplary human being and amazing person in general. RIP SHAWN
@@KodyXXVll he was also able to write with both hands at the same time, even writing letters with one hand and numbers with the other hand simultaneously.
Holy shyte, was there nothing the guy couldn't do? I've been raving about his guitar playing since I discovered it a couple years ago; now I see he was a genuis keyboard virtuoso as well! Unfathomable talent!
I had the good fortune back in 1996 to have met Shawn and most of us know about his incredible musicianship but after meeting Shawn I realised I had met a very kind person. He had a wealth of knowledge probably gained from the books he read. He lost me at times in conversation. Thank you for that incredible day in Southampton England Oct96.
amazing thank you., i wish i could have met him. i'm going to write this here because i never see it in comments, but apparently he would read like five or more books at once thanks to his photographic memory. blessings
Many don't know about Shawn's life and contributions he made. Everything you say is known by Shawn's admirers: people who know enough about music to know the depth of his talent and humble nature. I wish I could have met Shawn. He was a super intelligent in other areas than music as well.
This Is the guy I used to trade old "collectible beer cans" for bass guitar lesson. Oh, how I squandered my precious time with him. However, The most prfound thing about Shawn is the size and length of those fingers of his. He had incredible "reach"!
Shawn was and is a amazing musician! If you don't like him then do not look him up on youtube And don't write hurtful things about my brother. You obviously have no manners or taste!!!
I had the opportunity to talk to him, you will realize that it is true because we were talking about physics and time travels for 40 minutes!! Not only was a great musician, but he was a brilliant mind, an excellent and humble person.
@@dariovette9351 amazing. i imagine his ideas on time travel and physics were just as wild as his guitar riffs. jealous lol. i did get to see him give a masterful clinic in memphis shortly before he passed away though, and it was unlike anything I've ever seen to this day. I don't think my little 16 year old brain could have even fully fathomed what I was even witnessing at the time, but over the years I've realized more and more just how special it all was.
Shawn is deeply missed. I used to see him play every week with North Mississippi Allstar when they used to be jazz fusion in Memphis. Shawn was an excellent drummer also. Thanx for the post.
Shawn preferred the keyboard, I am told, and he also considered Jean Luc Ponty and Vangelis to be his major inspirations. Notice any similarity in the phrasing and scales that are being used? This man was a genius. It is so sad that he is gone.
It's easy to say that because people mostly know him for playing guitar. But he was absolutely amazing at keyboards (and he played piano before guitar). In fact, many of the guitar songs he composed were written on keyboards first.
I say he's underrated. The man's technical and musical phrasing is phenomenal. I learned a lot from his playing. And most "Lane fanatics" are some of the biggest names in the guitar world out there. I would have never found out about him if guys like Gilbert, Buckethead, Govan, MAB, Eklundh, Cooley, and many others didn't speak so highly of him.
Like many things that are only observed through the computer screen when seen live they take on a more insightful form showing many details that are hidden otherwise. If we were to tear apart his solos and discover what is going on it would yield far more than we think. Shawn was not just good he was beyond words. We are not all capable of understanding just how good he was. Thats why a decade later and still no one has come close to what he left behind. Gutherie Goven is a good player but to compare the two isnt anything to even bring up. Shawn was not just a guitar player, not just a pianist, he had an insight into music that we rarely see if at all. Immature to comment on his appearance. Obviously it had no determining factor on his ability, and is completely irrelevant to his musicianship. If anything it should be noted that even though he suffered from health issues he still excelled at his craft, surpassing everyone known to man.
Fred Farkle awesome comment! I'm a guitar nerd, or I'd like to think so anyways lol but knowing that Shawn Lane saw Allan Holdsworth when he was 20 and said it changed his musical life is such an insight and I can relate because the same thing happened to me, I was in love with SRV, Joe Satriani and David Gilmour and didn't know there was a world outside of that. Bless Holdsworth and Lane who have both passed to the next realm. RIP the masters!
@mashovbikes This video really showed how unique he is. Playing that fast on BOTH the keys and the guitar while still being very melodious and musical is quite a rare feat, indeed.
What the hell do they know about music? Haven’t seen that list as I have better things do do with my time, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they also missed Allan Holdsworth
Un guitariste énorme comme son talent. Surement le plus véloce de tous les gratteux du monde. Dommage qu'il soit disparut dans un quasi anonymat hormis la communauté guitaristique....merci Shawn pour ta sique
I knew Shawn during the Willys days in Memphis. He was a better violinist than keys or guitar, but all that matters is that he was indeed a god. Don't judge by these clips, go listen to his cd Powers Of Ten. Find out about him before running him down.
Shawn had incredible talent as do many top guitarists. You don't have to like everything a musician did to learn and expand on some special techniques and ideas he developed.
@shawnsis I couldn't agree more. Shawn will always attract a few trolls who will put him down, but they only make asses of themselves, and cheat themselves out of a peak experience. Anyone with ears and a heart can hear the beauty and genius apparent every time he played any instrument. Your brother will be loved by discerning people as long as we have a way to listen. Personally, I need a daily dose of his brilliant playing.
@jmulma Nobody is better than anyone else? If that's so, it means everyone who picks up a violin the first day, is as good as Itzhak Perlman. It means that the guys in Kiss are just as profoundly brilliant as Shawn Lane. I get tired of the trolls too, but to say everyone is equal is an illogical overreaction to the bickering, since it is obviously false.
Music is 99% of everything stuff (also frustrating talking people like you, etc... ;)) , "1% is MAGIC", this video is a good example :) Thx MR Master Shawn Lane!!!! Respect and guitarworld is missing you!!! Cheers folks
Chris641340: Thanks for you effort to make RU-vid a less shred-geek infected place to visit. For the rest of you: Hands down, Shawn Lane is insanely fast, and you have to give some kind of credit for all the years he has out into music and practising, but that does not imply that you have to like his style or rate him as a master musician. Could many of you other guys just for once stop bitching at each other? I have my preferences, you have yours. So be it.
