This is amazing, why do you have to tear down a 19 year old. He did it for a TV Show and he did an amazing. I personally like this version more than the Violent Femmes one, but that is not the point. We all like different things but we shouldn't be tearing anyone down. Shawn Mendes is a 19 year old who has made a successful career and does not deserve this hate.

Love the original song and I'm not a big fan of Shawn Mendes but this is an amazing cover. The Original Violent Femmes version is exciting and gets you moving and I love it, but the lyrics work in such a sad solemn way as well and it's portrayed perfectly in this cover.
Oh come on people it's just a cover. There's no reason to act like your life has ended just because you listened to it. There's stuff you like and stuff you don't like. Get over it and move on like the reasonable people you're supposed to be.
This cover of the Violent Femmes classic, completely loses its meaning and personality. The song is supposed to be about anger and sexual frustration. This cover completely neuters the song of its soul. I encourage any of u to look up the Violent Femmes, a truley bad ass punk band.
My thoughts exactly. I've heard people argue "It makes it deeper! It gives it more meaning!" Like no, I bet a lot of them don't know what meaning the song even has. It doesn't enhance or even change the meaning at all, it just takes it away entirely. Slowing it down, leaving out half the lyrics, and playing it over cheesy, generic piano doesn't make it "Deep".
Something about the fact it says "Shawn Mendes - Add it up(lyrics)" pisses me off too. Give credit where credit is due, it's a cover not an original... Especially if he's gonna ruin the tone.

No. The remake just sucks. There are some songs that you don't touch. You don't remake 'The Wall', 'Baba O'Reilly', 'Hotel California', 'Blue Monday' and so many more iconic songs. They represent more than the song itself. Is it right to turn 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' into a ballad or do a heavy metal version of 'Dust in the Wind'. Some thing are sacred.

shawn mendes has a great voice but no one gives credit to the original artist (The Violent Femmes) and that's how erasure of music begins. It's important to always credit the original artist so that they can be remembered for their work in creating the song, and not forgotten to a cover.
This is grate for people who never heard the original, that could bring a whole lot of fans they never had. a good cover of a great song they might never knew existed👍
Actually, this how it is on The 100, when his (minor) character was told to sing something and got attack by Jasper for playing the piano that reminded Jasper of Maya. and the song suits the show, due the shit everyone in the show been though, so actually it is a wonderful song.
Considering that it's a COVER what you said doesn't mean a lot. It was also morphed to fit the scene of the show. It was supposed to be slow and quite dark.
What he said was 100% valid, since in his opinion it doesn't capture the original's feeling and emotion. Personally I don't give a crap about what the show was trying to portray, might have worked for that one scene, but as a song, and ESPECIALLY as a cover, it sucks balls.
mitakast1 The cover is awesome and in my opinion far better than that shitty original. He did it this way SPECIFICALLY for the show so it was only needed for that ONE scene. He didn't ask to sing it like this and clearly was forced to by the producers so if you're going to blame someone blame them.

But I don't like it one bit, I only found out about it because I read comments about this under the original song, in fact there were tons if them. I'm not blaming anyone for anything - I just think that this is a shitty cover, and a shitty song overall.
