A video to show how I make a built-up Shay locomotive crankshaft. Specifically done for you, Dave, but others might like it as well.
This Shay crankshaft is for a 3 cylinder Shay locomotive engine in 1/8th scale, 7 1/2" gauge. It is constructed entirely of stainless steel, providing a 1.5" stroke for the 3 pistons. It will be made from castings by Ken Schroeder. All questions are welcome.
Thanks for watching.

Thanks, and as an "Original Transcon RR" fan, I am looking for photos of the actual building of an American steam locomotive in the 1860's...and wonder if they were constructed from scratch, or were assembled at the big factories, from sub-let manufacturers ...such as Rogers, etc. Thanks, again.

Amazing work. What scale Shay is this for? Did you heat and shrink the crank webs onto the journals?

No Jim, I did not. The extremely tight tolerance I used would not have allowed it. They are very snugly fit, and taper pins as well as sleeve seizing compound were used to fix them in place. And the scale is 1 1/2".
