Why are people ashamed of their ethnicity? I noticed also that in movies or not actors and actressss have to hide their "Filipino" side. Is being Filipino embarassing? Are we weird or what? Correction Maria, Filipino roots are Austronesian. So PH islands were first inhabited before any Polynesian islands in Pacific. But they reached Easter island, so they could be related to some Native American Indian tribes in Chile & Peru.

the host is right it is a generational thing. any filipino born in the 70s, 80s or early 90s would know this. many people wanted to be associated with the spanish blood that they would declare spanish as part of their ethnicity even though there is no proof (i see this is debated in tiktok which is kind of absurd because that means many still think they have spanish blood in them). but its the parents that are unwittingly instilling inferiority complex on them. parents always look up to european features--light skin, tall nose bridge, big eyes, and would even give quick snide comments on indigenous/black people when there's a chance. some parents would even go so far as to scoff at their own kids for being too dark or ugly and coerce them to use lightening products etc. or marry a white man (this last bit is quite common til now in the poor communities). that's also why many filipinos assimilate easily in "white nations" easily because of how quickly they want to dissociatethemselves with the country.. Im not saying the majority has this mindset but I guarantee you there are so many of them. i hope the newer generation has it better and step away from that colonial mentality.

Maria didn’t do any favors explaining Shay’s case. Filipinos don’t speak Spanish first of all. The main language is Tagalog, with other dialects. And a majority of the time pinoys don’t even carry that much “Spanish” lineage to begin with. So as far as “Passing” Hispanic or white?! That’s a pretty hard buy
