The last of the field prep work before planting is getting done. Matt gets to test out his new Reynolds dirtpan while Andy get started variable rate spreading some dry fertilizer. The big question is, will Matt's tractor pull the 17 yard dirtpan??? Matt gives an update on the ground he ripped last fall.

I’m not a farmer, I have absolutely no experience in farming, I know almost nothing about soil structure or what a cover crop is or anything like that. But I absolutely love this content. I am fascinated with all the work that goes into what you guys do. This is the only channel that I’ve found where you show even the minor stuff that you guys do throughout the year. I love this content. As a guy that knows nothing about farming, when you put certain fertilizers out are you trying to get the soil to like a certain Ph or something for your next crop? Also in reference to the cover crop - do you plant that? Or is it just natural growth? And if you do plant it, why?

Buy yourself an 8R and you’d be super happy. Hard to beat the comfort and ease of use of a Deere product

I’m not a fan of John Deere. They make good products but they have by far the most complex and expensive emission systems, not to mention a premium price for the green paint and parts.

Seeing that old equipment, you should certainly use some antique equipment but incorporate modern methods, seeds, chemical inputs you have. (a mini series like these folks ru-vid.com/group/PLbh27vRY46kC-N3oQLuIfnG2pmVUdIFDj ) I suspect you'll gather more subscribers since there are a lot of new homesteaders with antique equipment budgets. A few hints: strip till through standing rye with a cultivator set to be the grooves for old shoe-style corn planters, roller-crimp the rye after the corn emerges with a cultipacker or smooth field roller/leveler "down and back" to flatten like a roller-crimper. Would be interesting to compare acres/hour rates and the purchase price of each approach; what would be the largest number of acres that could be farmed with the old gear (and new methods)?

I don’t farm in order to RU-vid. I RU-vid to showcase our farm and practices. Subscribers and channel growth is irrelevant to me. I don’t make content just to get views

Just curious what the total cost of applying cover crops comes out to. Cost of the seed and application and additional cost of burn down strips?
@griggsfarmsllc
@griggsfarmsllc 5 месяцев назад
It depends on the blend I’m planting. Usually varies between $20-$50/acre. I don’t count the cost of the Burndown strips as additional because I would be doing a Burndown application anyways in a regular no till system.

what is the chemical reaction that causes the fragipan to seal again? could injecting something like lime or gypsum behind the ripper points at the fragipan level stop that reaction?
@griggsfarmsllc
@griggsfarmsllc 5 месяцев назад
I’m not sure what exactly the chemical bond is. Dr. Murdock does a pretty good job of explaining it in my “No Plows Allowed” video from this winter. I do know that there’s not an Ammendment we can apply that will dissolve the fragipan
