The moment she spun in a circle with Prince I knew it was all good from there. My American bulldog mix does the same play spin when she is at her happiest. It’s hilariously cute every time! Another fantastic video and well worth the wait.
More people that have "aggressive dogs" need to see this. I think a lot of the problem is some "expert" says "aggressive dog they will kill anything", and then the owners provide no socialization out of fear. I think you may have changed these owners' lives, and you have 100% opened up this dog's life. A+ work!
100%!!! I used to be like this too. I used to believe my dog was animal aggressive bc he’s a pit mix. I was able to socialize him with a small pug. So it’s all possible, just ppl have to be patient & it’s a slow process
"Just because somebody looks at you wrong in the supermarket doesn't mean you can punch them." well this is news to me. clearly, I've been grocery shopping incorrectly.
I really enjoyed seeing her owners realize what a happy, friendly girl they actually have. I believe they have a whole new attitude toward their dog now.
Hey, I bet a very real trigger could be everyone (humans) being stressed and anxiety about the "aggressive" pitbull meeting other dogs. You guys did great staying positive and calm
Hey Joel, my 11 mo Harrier is super social… We had a small incident at the dog park yesterday where she was playing with a border collie and she tried to put her paws on his head and the collie snapped at her… They were totally fine after that and I was trying to calm the female owner that he was just teaching my dog a lesson… The owner was so scared and wanted to take her dog home… I told her to watch your channel to learn how older dogs teach pups… I hope I was correct in doing so 🤔
@@drummerboy2834 He has great subscribers! Many of us know how busy he is and cannot answer all the questions from all the videos, so many of us will help him out by answering questions. We’ve seen his videos sometimes many times over because we all know that our dogs are a work in progress. So, we are pretty sure what he would say. Welcome 🌟
I have to tell people all the time it's okay if their dog snaps at my puppies. They're annoying and intense cattle dogs and they NEED an older dog to put them in their place. I'm to the point I welcome it because sometimes those little assholes don't want to listen to me like my own children. 🙃
Nothing to do with this particular video. However, these methods work. I walk my dog without a leash in a rural town with deer, moose, rabbits, other dogs, etc. my dog always stays by my side and obeys. We constantly get compliments. We have been asked who trained our dog, and we did it ourselves. In fact, this is the first dog my wife has had….she does 90% of the training. It started with watching these videos and doing two to three mile plus walks a day while practicing these methods. Our dog is 18 months and a joy to have around.
My dog got growled and barked at during a walk (both were on a leash) and the dog tried to lunge at him. The other day we bumped into the same dog and it was MY dog who barked and even growled first. I corrected him instantly, but at the same time I was telling myself it wasn’t that big of a deal and my dog did that because the other one had started it when we first met him and mine should be allowed to “defend himself”. Turns out it was totally wrong hahahah!! Thx Joel!! Happy for this little diva, great and teachable video as always!!!
100% changed the lives of these owners and their dog! What a sweetheart! I hope they come out for another session because I would love to see Prince playing with her in the pasture! Also it was adorable how much Connery liked the dad🐾❤️ Another awesome vid!!!!
I watch and trust your videos more than any others, especially when it comes to socialization, because you explain the body language in time with the training session. My experience with trainers has ranged from positive only, intensely rough old-school, and reliant on shock collars. I like that your process is reasonable and extremely adaptable when people can understand what you're watching for. Would you ever do a commentary of dogs at dog parks so we could understand the behavior in other scenarios?
Yes! Maybe a play-by-play commentary on each dog as it enters, or as it interacts, with the others. What Joel thinks any particular dog's postures/actions say about the dog's intentions.
@@CanEverything what ?? Please back up what you say with examples . Otherwise it’s “nonsense” (using your own words here ). EDIT: I see you make critiques on several of his videos . Which there’s nothing wrong with that in and of itself but I have to ask.. are you a dog trainer ?
Thank you for mentioning that many dogs react to huskies and shepherds. Mine does and I wasn’t sure if this was common or not. I have learned SO MUCH from your channel. I’m in awe that you give so much good information for free. You obviously care very much about dogs having a great life with their people. Thank you. ❤ PS… I’ve read/watched/experienced many different trainers. You are absolutely the most balanced.
Joel, I subscribed! You are an excellent dog trainer, you're genuine, you are not abusive by any means, and you make these videos for everyday people, people with jobs, and a family that can not spend a lot of money or spend years training getting their dog trained. Except, dog training doesn't just stop. Dogs are always a work in progress. You show us what you do in a way that we can do it ourselves, all for free. Thank you!
Man, I wish I could bring my friends dog to you, but I’m in PA. My friends dog has bitten multiple people, and goes after every dog. Also goes after things on wheels like bikes or skates etc. But from working with her myself, I KNOW she’d be like this one. Because, I made my friend have her meet my dog but on a walk (my dogs pays no attention to other dogs when on walks), and the body language was there where you can tell, once my friends dog got to be able to smell and know my dog, she was happy. Although, my friend needs the most training to be honest lol
With my own and others experience to count on, i would say the lack of knowledge with the owners is often a deciding factor on why some dogs act "badly"(Sure sometimes genetics can play a part, especially the way some breeders operate.). You could almost say the "70/30 principle" applies = 70% lies with the owner and getting them the proper knowledge, the remaining 30% will often flow naturally once the owners got said knowledge and knows how to apply it to their dogs. Also to your point of doing a "packwalk", it´s a really underutilized tool of socializing dogs and a way to really get the dogs and owner to be rehabilitated into a working cohesive😉
So glad to see a new video up here. That American Bull Dog (right?) is the first of that breed I've seen I would actually call pretty. I think it's her eye "makeup." Great to see it go from "aggressive dog" to NOT. amazing. Hope it's good news for this family and dog from here. She needs to have lots of dog friends!
I noticed 2 things in this video: 1. The owners seemed very apprehensive/nervous (prior events could have led to that emotion.) and i know that dogs can and will pick up on those emotions and react in a "protective" or "aggressive" way. 2nd: The previous "trainer" ( and i use this term very loosely.) should not be training dogs probably. Especially since even the owners in my understanding who is lacking in knowledge about the breed and the psychology of the dog in question. Yet they still questioned the previous trainers methods... So glad they were able to get a session with you Joel and see the fantastic and happy dog that was behind their fearbased projection of who she was. Now it´s just sweat and elbow-grease, then they will in all likelyhood have a very friendly and happy dog. Kudos once again to you Joel and keep up the good work! catch you in the next one 💯👍🏻
Thank you for your comment, we are the dog owners in this video and are so grateful to Joel that he was able to show us her potential. What wasn't mentioned in this video was that we rescued her from the shelter, as an owner surrender for attacking another dog. She is not our first American bulldog, we know the breed well, but she is our first rescue (2 or 3 yrs old when we got to her). While we have no other history of her past before us, she has attacked a neighbor dog requiring surgery and has come close several other times even while still on leash, hence our hesitation but desire to find a controlled, professional environment to take that next step. We are looking forward to giving our girl the best life possible! 💕
@@shannons1331 Then i get why you appeared a little bit nervous/apprehensive in the video due to your prior experience with her. If you keep to the method of training that Joel is teaching you, you will 100% be rewarded with a "dreamdog", the interaction she had with Prince is proof of that. Keep up the hard work, don´t get complacent and i wish you all the best and happiness with your rescue.
I want to say this, You are absolutely wonderful with teaching dogs. I have a 2 year old aussia border collie mix that has high anxiety/separation/and will continue to bark when we have visitors and at our neighbors. I have been watching your videos on how to get him use to people and so on... and the difference in just a few hours (every dog is different) was just amazing with how quickly he grasp the concept of out of the circle and don't bolt out the door. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills.
Joel this was fantastic! I really needed to see this. Really interesting. My rescue American bulldog has very similar tendencies, which have baffled me. Sometimes playful, sometimes reactive (especially when growled at). Your Loose leash walking has been life changing for us. Fence, lead, muzzle. Will figure out which one/s are best for her and introduce her stable dogs this way. I've been a little hesitant so this until now. I have only recently discovered your channel. You are such a direct and common sense trainer. Love it 💜
I had no idea dogs react more to German shepherds and huskies. That explains why my Anna low growled at a friendly husky in a pet friendly store. But could be that we were at the checkout so it was enclosed but my girl also met another husky at a soccer field and would play until Zoe my other one was by the other owner and she would get jealous and I’d have to tell her settle and back her off and then they’d go back to playing. My girl is a border collie lab and Zoe is border collie. They are both a year and a half now, Anna is a month older. They met these dogs earlier this year. But it’s good to know what to work on more around certain breeds. Very interesting!
Short answer, YES!!!! With a knowledgeable, experienced trainer/animal communicator like Joel this is absolutely achievable in most cases. Obviously there are always exceptions but I love seeing footage of this. Even in this video the owner says that it showed them it was POSSIBLE!!!!
I wish all dogs were like her, they must have been struggling with this dog for a long time, from the beginning the owners sounded like they have a lot of training vocabulary, she even called redirecting when you said tried to bite you, love you Joel awesome channel
That was a absolutely beautiful blue heeler at the end of the video. Best dogs ever! My favorite dog breed Blue heelers and Rottweilers and I've owned several.
Love your videos. They are always so informative. Congrats on the over 200,000 subscribers. I started watching with 30,000 then celebrated with you on the 100,000. Joel you are one of the best ! 👏👏👍❤
Bro, no joke. I have been watching for a minute now and I have to say, well done!!! Prince is the coolest, most dynamic, intelligent, sweetheart, I have ever seen. You have done an incredible job training and teaching him. And to teach other dogs!!! Just amazing!!! Well done sir!
Good video. On smelling, I do think when dogs smell the hocks they can pick up some useful information. But I agree the getting to know you spots are what you mentioned
My female collie mix is so much like this dog! Play style is different due to the herding insinct though. Lots of nipping which I dont quite know when to correct. She is also dominant, a crazy rough smeller and marker. She also likes to play really rough. Thanks for the awesome video! I will definitely try these meeting methods!
Maybe use a leash take away her freedom, slowly give her more and more as she behaves better. But alot will depend on how the other dogs play to. In general i just want dogs to accept that there are other dogs around, and respect other dogs space if they ask for it.
My Great Pyrenees, Abby, when I was younger was wonderful with the neighbors young border collie. She's another herd/ guard dog, her thick fur seemed to keep her from most of the nips. Abby used to lean on the pup for a second and at one point backed her butt up and sat on her.
My friend has an American Bulldog and she's the sweetest thing ever, she will come over to me and presents her backside for scratches every single time.
I’m so happy you posted a video bro I’ve been missing seeing your videos, we need to see some more THE door method and THE leash walking method and stuff just like this one lol. You have the best videos and every dog is different but it still works for probably close to all dogs.
I mean there's plenty of coverage on the door and leash walking methods. If you still struggle with it I'd go back and rewatch them. There's not really a lot he could add to them I think. We do need more videos of this, if only to watch a dog socialize properly for the first time.
@@Flippokid I’m just saying I love when he post videos with different dogs. Same methods with different dogs is still fun for me to watch. I have the method down and my dogs walk great
My now 13 year old Lab/beagle mix was always thought to be aggressive towards other dogs, as well. I was told upon getting him that he did not do well with dogs bigger than him. After 10 years of having him, we had issues with the neighbors dogs at the beginning, but we soon learned it wasn't our dog, it was theirs. He has gotten along well with every dog since. For our dog, it turned out to be people not realizing he was doing NORMAL corrective behavior towards the younger dogs. He lives happily with our GSD, and has regular play dates with an Australian shepherd mix (who is massive), and a Cockapoo. All of them he corrected when they were being too nosey, or too excited, and all of them have learned what he will and will not tolerate. They all cuddle puddle up and play perfectly now.
Anyone who has a dog and brings it to you for help is an awesome dog owner, basically because they care, and they want to make theirs and the dogs life better. It is very interesting to see how many owners on your videos control their dogs with a tight leash. I know it is a totally automatic thing to do, and giving your dog a loose leash takes training and practice for the owner. We hear about stress and nerves travelling down the leash to the dog and them feeling it, I have seen this so clearly in a couple of recent videos and it really visualizes the theory. 👍💪🐶♥️
Wow Mr Beckman. Im following you from 20k subscribers. Its blown up hahaha! Verry good job! and thank you for all the work. We have a nice good behaving dog thanks to your content.
New to the channel just wanted to say , Amazing that you care about these beautiful animals . Hard for me to own another dog , the bond is so strong when they pass it’s just destroys me . I lost one about 8 years back . I let my father in law keep him one day I went for a job interview in another state came back 24 hours later and he passed from some sort of heat stroke . I cried for a week atleast and could never let myself get passed it .
Hey there! So I wanted to comment on a video you did back in January, when you said that single, white women with no kids are Karen’s when it comes to training their dogs because it’s purely positive training with zero discipline. I am all those things with a 4 year old GSD. First, I want to say I am right there with you and love your style of training. Second, I have used many of your methods and it works. We are not all Karen’s, but this comment is not about that as much as it is about letting you know that your methods do work and Lucy (my GSD) is a prime example of that. I have the deepest bond with her, so much so that I never had to train off leash because she doesn’t want to wander to far from the one person she trusts more than anyone and that is me. Thank you for the videos and for being realistic in a industry that is trying to downplay the importance of discipline. You are a breath of fresh air in the dog training industry.
Great video - especially for dog body language /communication & the fact that a dog won't necessarily "like" or "get along with" every dog- there's an unspoken 'conversation', and that conversation can differ from dog to dog / environment - to do better for our dogs, we've got to learn the language!
at the minute 12.16 i see that last dog (your) starting to growl first, i guess is kinda normal for her to start barking right after, btw really appreciate all your vids and the good effort you putting on explaining the process, keep it up
Dear Joel, Your videos have helped me become a much better dog owner and I will continue to watch your channel and learn from you. You have helped me train my large dog Ace to be able to go on walks calmly and happily without lunging and pulling the leash. He now walks by my side and with a short but loose leash. I have a new challenge to face now, and that is my insane little 10 week old Jack Russel Terrier. He is tiny but is absolutely crazy, loves to bite and play constantly. I have been trying to give him lots of exercise and keep him stimulated often, but even still he acts crazy inside. Could you make or do you have any videos of you with a young small and energetic breed like the Jack Russel? And if my question is stupid because I should just follow the same exact tactics as I would with any other dog than I apologize in advance
Thank you so much for your videos. I have learned so much. I do have training experience, mostly with horses, but my current dog has baffled me. She has a huge prey drive and was labeled a "super puller" at the humane society. I am disabled and can't handle the pulls. I recently got a gentle leader and after a week of conditioning, we went out for the first time. She was perfect! It's like she was watching your videos with me. 🤣 She has been reactive with new men since she chased of a couple of guys who tried to attack me alone on a walk 2 years ago. I would appreciate any videos on how to help a dog with this type of problem. My 1st dog, when I was a teenager had the same problem. Thank you!
I have a female American terrier pitbull that was from my grand parents before and they don't even took her out the last 5 years cause they wasn't able to "control her" and "she would kill any animal near from her", Gala has been with me since she has 7 years, 3 years ago and yes, she was reactive but never a sadistic crazy beast. She just need help, I give her my time, my love and my little knowledge that I took from this videos and she is progressive amazingly, she now lives with me and my 3 dogs, Coco a 8 years old Chihuahua, Apollo a 4 years dalmatian and Tyrion a 3 months rescue mixed dog, and she is never been agressive again with other dogs, she love the puppy more than I would ever imagine and that makes me so happy for her. I really think every dog deserves the best life possible ✨🐶
Ive watched so many of your videos and man Prince is the dog that he thinks he is 💕 such a good boy give him a promotion 🤣I genuinely enjoy your videos so much to learn from you.
i just started watching these vids and wondering what happened to the brown coat Bosco? the way this man helps people while his dog helps other dogs is quite the dynamic duo to watch and the trust they have in eachother is amazing!
Your channel is new to me. Watched a few. aftre your crazy altercation video's from end of August popped up on my feed a few days ago. Cool vids. I have a question on dog choice. Why Dobermans as your main teaching dogs?
Excellent video!! Wow! Very impressive. She did so well with a lot of stimulation. I have an American bulldog who was attacked badly when we were out on a walk by a dog who was off leash. Came out of no where. So, his demeanor has become less trusting. I have him with a trainer and he has improved with how he feels around other dogs, but I think having him with a muzzle at first, the way you did it, will be VERY HELPFUL and safe. Can you tell me if you sell that size muzzle for the big American Bulldog heads? 😅 Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 It give us hope!!
Hey I am a new subscriber and I have been enjoying the videos helping me learn alot, I am a college student but I am actually looking at becoming a dog trainer if things don't work out for me, what would you recommend for me?
I live in Maryland and I wish I had known about Beckman's 3 years ago. If I had, my boy Minnow, 110 American Bulldog, may have been around a lot longer. He was aggressive toward my 65lb Boxer Bentley and my mother I had to keep them separated for 5 years on different floors of the house or they would go in for a full dog fight. In 5 years I had most likely broken up 10 or more dog fights between due to human error and letting them accidentally get together . The last one was the worse. I was able to get them apart even though my hands were hamburger from pulling Minnows jaws off of Bentley and holding him by the jaws so the only thing he was clamping down on were my hands. My poor mother fell but was able to restrain our Boxer while I forced Minnow into our basement bathroom and got the door shut. In the end while Bentley was kenneled I let Minnow out to get him to our second floor, but he went right after Bentley in the crate but thankfully couldn't get him. Unfortunately my mother was still on the floor so instead Minnow latched on to her arm and started shaking. Even though both hands were in pain and a complete wreck (more like hamburger) I was able to pry him off her arm and get him to the second floor and crated. I had to make the hardest decision of my life and have him put down the next day by the vet while i was having emergency surgery on my hands because the specialist were afraid I would lose the use of both my hands. We adopted him at 5 years old and raised him till he was 10 and he had always had issues due to coming from an abusive family, but he was my boy always attached at my hip. I still look back and wonder if I could have done something different to help him in the 5 years I raised him and loved him and not be living with the guilt I have every day. If I had known about Beckman's maybe, just maybe, he would have stood a better chance and he and Bentley may have gotten along. I know for a fact that Positive training would have never worked. I am sorry for the long post but I think I needed this to just remember and cry a little because I still miss Minnow and to get it off my chest so to speak.
Oh man! What a tragic story. I’m sorry you and your mother went through all that. My boy Reggie is about 110 lbs, but I raised him from a pup. I can’t imagine how scary that was. AB’s are incredibly strong. I’ve had one run in with a pitbull and Reggie, and when that dog attacked him, there was no stopping either of them without a gun. Thankfully Reggie stopped on his own once he had the other dog pinned to the ground, but I’d never seen an actual fight like that between dogs before, and I thought for sure he was going to finish the job no matter how much I yelled and pulled. I couldn’t imagine going through what you did. I’m in Maryland too, so if you ever see a skinny white boy walking around Towson area with a big ol bulldog, that’s probably me and Reggie! Say hi and give em a scratch. Bless!
@@kevinbradley8613 I am also in Towson. Right by the Giant and Firestone. Hopefully one of these days we can meet up. Would love to meet Reggie. Sounds like one smart and lucky dog.
@@clutchfrog262 small world!! I’m actually in Lutherville, but most people not from the area wouldn’t know where that is lol. I’m right up the road from the Fresh Market off Dulaney Valley. I do make my way down your way on occasion, but that’s an exceptional walk haha. Hopefully we’ll see you sometime! It’s always fun to run into great people out on walks. What a crazy coincidence lol.
Must be frightening to see any kind of aggression from a dog like her. Shes beautiful and seemingly very good natured. Her little hop spin i found particularly endearing.
