I have restored antique furniture for 30 years and what you say is a desk, is actually a washstand. The dining chairs are Charles Eastlake. What a beautiful bunch of history you found in that unit. Congratulations.

The “book” you were looking at is a daguerreotype, a picture taken without a negative on a sheet of copper thinly plated with silver. These were commonly taken in the 1840s and 1850s. They were frequently encased in a decorative frame which protected the photo from damage. Daguerreotypes framed the photos of loved ones and were commonly carried by Civil War soldiers to keep their loved ones close to them while engaged in war.

I have a daguerreotype of my 3rd great grandmother that her son (my great great grandfather) carried during his service in the war between the states. He carried it all the way from Pennsylvania to Tennessee during his 2 years of service. It has a crack but mostly in amazing shape!

What a fantastic unit! My mom and dad got married 8n the later part of the -😅50’s. My mom had some Sterling silverware. She didn’t have a full place setting, but odd and end pieces. Beautiful craftsmanship in the pattern. I love seeing those old pieces. Gorgeous furniture pieces too!
@SilverAuntie
@SilverAuntie Год назад
My parents were married in 1955. They were given a full set of Old Master silverware, as well as an antique sterling silver pitcher engraved with letter H that was given to them by dad's great aunt. My parents divorced and, in the way of acrimonious divorces, mom made the pitcher disappear until many years later, when it turned up with a K on it (mom's new initial). For many years, she would hide it whenever we would go for a visit. In her mind, she was convinced that we were going hi to "steal" it back for dad. I know, crazy, right? She became very ill at the end, and while she was in the hospital, her younger children helped themselves to everything of value in the house. My sister and I live out of state and, in fact, were not notified of her death until the night before her funeral (long story for another time). All of the silver, crystal, ORIGINAL Desert Rose china, and several other things "disappeared". It's a shame, really, because these things had history, not just monetary value. I hope someone found them in some pawn shop and gave them a good home.

What a bonus! Those silver rings are napkin rings, not neckerchief slides. They still had those brownie scout pins in the 60's because I have one. And the silver box was probably her grandparents or gr grandparents silver set. Such awesome things.

The spoons with the curled handles are often for either disabled people to feed themselves OR to train toddlers to use cutlery rather than hands. My Mum (who would be 92) had hers from childhood and all the spoons and forks had curled handles. They were made that way, not done by parents. (in the 20's and 30's) Adding: in the Girl Scout box, the little hats are hand made lavender bags/pot pourri bags - to perfume clothing in drawers. And the silver 'ring' is a napkin ring. I have a set, given to me as a Wedding present, 36 years ago. From an era when cloth napkins were the norm, especially for dinner parties.
