Hey from Hickory NC. It's bad but normal for trees in the forest to fall. You've cleaned many trees up over the years, back when you didn't have an excavator, just the Wallensteen winch. I've always thought how good it is that you come along and cut these fallen trees, maintaining your forest and getting good use of the wood. I wonder where the mini cabin is from that illegal tree stand is, could a missed shot in the direction of the cabin have reached it? If the perp obviously don't follow the law, what if he is hunting out of season and mistakes Melissa or Archie as game? Not good! I would definitely take it down and replace it w a no trespassing sign. It's so nice that the wood yard is stone ready, very exciting! So happy! Thanks for sharing. See ya tomorrow! 👍🚜❤

I read a reaction not too long ago about people coming on your land to hunt without asking permission. He had that happen a few times to him. Three years in a row he found a tree stand on his land that was not his. He kept tearing them down and selling them on eBay. After three times these people got the message and did not return.

We had a few deer in the pastures and one fawn. I feed them corn in the winter but we don't hunt. Now the guy who use to live here i know from the neighbors he got caught poaching the deer out of season. Inside the house when we walked through so many deer heads and most were very young since they only lived here 6 years. That cleanup should last for a while.

We have 3.2 acres. This development was logged prior to platting. Still, I find we are thinning more and more. Recently there was a wildfire just 2 miles from here on a day with winds of 50 MPH. Fortunately it didn't cross US16 and head our way. The Wabash Spring Fire was 111 acres and was contained by our fantastic wildland fire fighters. No structures were lost because the homeowners had practiced Firewise measures. We are working towards that as well. We were enamored with the trees when we bought the land, but the longer we're here, the more I want less trees. Both because of the fire danger, but just because they are messy. It's all Ponderosa pine and they leave cones everywhere.

@gsyguy1

Time to do some forestry management and start taking down trees that need to come down and thin out the woodland to give the old and new ones space to develop and grow, had some people moan and say something about a well known and used woodland we have, but it was a case of not doing it for the hell of it but it needed to be done as most of the trees were near their end and needed to be thinned out and some ,well they were taken down before they fell down and hurt someone, as you guys have found out there are maybe more trees that need to come down before they get blown over, if its rotten or starting take it down, you have the means and the tools to make them either into fire wood or the next house or shed ,theres many a video to be made in showing others woodland or forestry management along with WHY your doing it.

I know Logging is both bad and good. Bad part is taking all the trees down or many of them. But also bad cause while doing so, they end up destroying alot of smaller trees that are still growing and not useable for Sawmill. But also bad because most end up leaving the Stumps behind instead of grinding or pulling them out and removing them. For the good part. Logging can Help smaller trees grow back up, can help Dry out the Forest Floor removing any possible funguses that tend to attack and kill the smaller trees. But can also help control Forest Fires bit better.

It's good to have them harvested. It helps the smaller trees and helps keep the wood healthy. But I always recommend to have them select harvested and have a certified forester come in to mark the trees. And always make sure you use a good high recommend company. To many people have bad companies come in just to get fast money.

I was a teenager, just getting into the "fill my tank with gas and take some oil" with me to go just as far as a half of a tank would take me, then turn around to come home. I wanted to learn my state I was being raised in as I was born in N. Carolina. At eight mom passed on so met my dad in Washington state where I found many adventures to go on. I did not fit in with other kids, I was a half native and half "kids called me" bad words kid, so just cut them from want to be friends list. I had a different route figured out for each drive, and my memory was my strong suit... if I had been somewhere, I remembered every turn or different way to go so was really surprised when the 62 Lincolns day storm came. There where I lived at was a bunch of trees that came down... the state decided to log a large portion and make a new road for people to take for the next town... all this to tell you about this large stand of virgin old growth fir had stood. My dad was owner/operator of the very largest logging private company in that state at the time. Dad tells me that morning to get our biggest logging truck warmed up, and we are taking the trailer that mounted to the log bunk on the truck... it was my job to drive the lowboy as I cared less about brakes, steering, or other things I should of been very concerned about. I was driving a "Haul Scott" truck that had twelve foot wide bunks on it.... not legal for highway use.... back then was a warning from the officer to not do again... they usually warned me or dad about five or more times a month, and still never a ticket. Got a great story about trucks and officers of the law, should you ever want to hear it. Back to going to see some trees I had only heard about. These trees on state land had been protected since they were discovered. I got there where the trees had fell, in a long line of a half mile long, and about, + 100 feet wide swathe. One of the most average trees was what I came up to first.... my truck had fourteen foot wide bunks for the oversize trailer, on its back, was a old Northwest Shovel converted to load logs with... It was at the time one of the largest of its kind, so filled the trailer. I had to go back for the boom that we mounted on the shovel when in place as you would of never cleared the high tension wires over roads... Time to come to the point as dad had used a D8 R model cable blade machine, to make a decent road fresh punched in, nice material that lended well to making roads. My rig I am driving is taking up sixteen feet easy, that wide and high as well. A small quarter of the tree had split off and was laying to the side and dad had pushed past it to get a spot big enough to turn around the truck so going past this smaller piece of the tree laying to the side still dwarfed this truck and load being hauled!! I remember looking out where a window should be, on this old truck that took all I had in me to turn the steering wheel (that steering wheel" should of been kept as a souvenir as it was over two foot in diameter and it felt small for that rig. Dad had a survey tape measure that would go fifty foot, this quarter measured over sixteen feet and the wide way on this tree "quarter" was just under twenty foot across it. We used powder wedges to cut those trees into pieces we could load sideways on the lowboy so twelve foot long pieces quartered up had enough lumber, clear lumber to build a small home framed. Tying my story together, I jump into my rig to go south and visit a uncle and wow... this wind had caught a swathe of trees two hundred feet wide average and went for miles.... hence the name "Lincolns Day Storm" .... those were just normal for the times, virgin growth trees. In todays average much larger as not much logging was done far from any towns. I remember on just one tree, it provided loads of logs for a solid week on just one tree. Sadly we didn't have saws that cut anything near the size of trees we were dealing with, so it would take a week of nibbling through a tree to cut into pieces so we could haul it. It was deemed too large to cut for some of them and so we just cut and blasted holes through for the road to go through them leaving them to rot on the ground. It did get enough coverage on the news to make it a tourist attraction... not uncommon to see many out of state licence plates in the state park. One tree was a large hollow thing, and they had cut out stuff to make it into a large camping site inside of it. Mike, I apologize for the length of this comment, I just get excited remembering some of the stuff I grew up with.

Good afternoon! Warm here today, and I was strategically backwards on planning my day. I ran some stuff to the post office when it was cool, then helped the missus put out flyers for a block party when it was warming up good, and cleaned/vacuumed/power washed the truck and suv when it was baking out. Well, the washing was ok, but being in the sun that much and sweating took it out of me. When I go to the farm in July, I may have to start the chainsaw work by starlight! That’s going to be hotter that here today. That second, smaller white oak - did that look like lightning damage to anyone else? Looked like it exploded. Poachers are a problem on our farm. Even from a road. We’re too far from the sheriff to be a deterrent, unfortunately. Good luck with yours.

Our woods has been harvested. After many storms, our woods has so many up rooted large trees. We have logs that I need to get out but not enough hours in the day or days in the week. The only thing bad about harvesting your woods is you can see how awful it looks when they finish, winter month’s especially. Tell Melissa,I was out on a fence line in the pasture in the woods. I stirred up a baby fawn that looked like it was only 2-3 weeks old. I talked to my neighbor farmer and he is seeing many fawns too. Seems like the births are a little late. Your place is really looking great. Be safe out there, farmer rod

No storm, no rain fairly dry fall at that point. It was just time for it to fall. been running cellular game cameras for a year now...they have been great for scouting and keeping up on our property and may be a good way to check in on your new found stand...why cant people just stay on their property...anyway, we run some feeders and I can follow the antler growth and the fawning season...here in GA, fawning season is just starting...have only seen 1 on game pics so far, but expecting to see several more. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy all of your videos shares....Cav

We saw a spotted fawn about the size of a fox in the right of way last night here in north central NC, which is what I have abbreviated to NCNC. Certainly the time for them.

Hey Mike maybe you should look at your trees in that area because I have heard of trees getting something that they call root rott that kill the trees

Great video! Like you’ve said before, enough trees come down from storms or whatever for harvesting without having to cut them down. You definitely won’t be looking for something to do for a while, but at least it’s something you enjoy doing. Retirement is great! Enjoy.

Amazing, the oaks are kinda ending the first/second/third life cycle after the American Chestnut blight. So many woods have been over run by the poplar and beech as the oaks cycle. North of Harrisburg the gypsy moths have opened to door for poplar take over. Not much nutrition for the deer herd. Nice to see your oaks healthy and replacing themselves.

Mike, has your Stiltgrass started growing in your area yet? I remember you stated you were going to start a 5 year plan to rid your woods of it. Here in S.W. Va. it is just emerging.

Just starting to emerge in PA. We get it in our pastures, livestock don't eat it but the other grasses seem to be starting to fill in...I hope.

Yes it has started. Levi was hoping to get a preemergent spray on it before but that was the middle of maple syrup season and couldn't make it work. Penn State Extension has a whole fact sheet on it with a treatment plan and what time to do what treatment. So we will be following that plan

@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans do they recommend planting anything to compete with it? Fescue, shrubs, trees? If the program is just spraying it without filling the ecological void that stiltgrass is occupying then it'll just come back. Nature abhors bare ground.

You’ve got plenty of wood already on the ground to fill your firewood bins and saw mills for quite some time. Just need to pull it out of the woods. Somehow I see a John Deere skidder in your future 😂
