Can you tell us more about the national plowing competition that your dad won? Like what was the criteria for winning and what made the super 88 a winning tractor at that time?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
Each competitor got an identical amount of ground to plow in a set amount of time. They were judged on straightness of the furrows, even plowing depth, residue being buried, the back furrow (which is the first round where the plow is throwing on top of unplowed ground), the dead furrow (which is the where the last passes meet and can be deep if not done right), eveness of the headlands where the plow enters and leaves the ground. They could go as slow or fast as they wanted, stop and make adjustments to their plow, or their tractor, but that all was during their time, and if they didn't finish their plots, they lost points. Judges rated the different criteria, and it was tallied at the end, with the highest score being the winner. People would start with local competitions, usually organized by 4-H clubs, and work their way up to the state level, with a couple competitors from each state going to the National competition. It could have been about any tractor that won, because it was the plow and the operator that made for a win. Dad used an Oliver 4240 plow that was customized for the competitions. I still have it, and it is still set up for competition. It used 12 inch bottoms, but he custom cut 16 inch shares to work with those bottoms. There were jointers on each coulter to help bury residue, a custom adjustment lever and hitch. I hope to get the plow restored soon, it's rusty but field ready.
@lingenfeltera
@lingenfeltera 5 лет назад
Chris, thank you very much for the information and history. That’s a neat competition and even better you have family history there. Thanks again.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
It's not the social event it was back in the 1960s, but they still have the plowing contests, and the world competition was in Minnesota this year. I've got slides from the National Competition near Sioux Falls, SD, and both Nixon and Kennedy made campaign stops at the events.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
There aren't as many farmers as there was back when I was in school, but there are more tractors coming to school now than there was back then. Our school has a top notch FFA chapter with a high percentage of the students in it. There was a Hagie sprayer that had already left by the time I made the video in the afternoon, and a big Fendt with a grain cart. They always add up what everything is worth, they came up with $2.1 million this time around. Granted, it doesn't take long these days. Thanks for watching!

Great video! it's cool that the school does that. I wish they did that here in middle Georgia. Beautiful ride back. I enjoyed the scenery. @ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
The road commission put calcium chloride solution on the dirt roads for dust control. It's the same stuff that they load tractor tires with for weight, and that stuff leaking will destroy a rim. Last fall was particularly dull for colors, but we seem to have some very vivid colors this year. I might have to do another color tour in the near future. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@burningdinosaurs 5 лет назад
@@ThatOliverGuyChris I watch almost everything at 2X or there'd be no way I could keep up with everybody's content. I still don't lol. But as far as I've heard, it still counts as full viewing time. Basically just streaming it to the computer and rendering the frames twice as fast. I still get ads at the same spots. But that could be wrong. Sorry if I've been cutting you short!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
No worries, I know time can be a premium. I'm behind on what I watch. From what I can find it's actual watch time that counts, but that's not from yt, so take it with a grain of salt. After my digging, it is watch time that now drives the algorithm. Anybody can start viewing, but keeping them watching long enough to view all the ads is youtube's goal. Audience retention is key. The better you retain, the more likely your video will get recommended. Which gets you more views. It's just that easy! Lol

You must be 18 to drive a car on your own, but at 17 you can now (new thing here) get a license and drive a car IF there is an adult in the passenger side that has had a license for minimum 10 years, no traffic violations and is over 30 years old, and be able to drive the car legally at any time!! Our highschool tried to suspend and refuse graduation to two students who work on farms right near the school on the national observed day. The students had parking permits...parked in their proper spots didn't linger nor draw attention to themselves. I told the school board members and the disciplinarian I would move on them in a criminal case where they committed a crime against minors should they choose to follow through on their threats. I'm sparing legal language here that was used in that pursuit that day. After my statement ...completely unrelated to me in the filled to capacity auditorium where the school board was trying to put other issues in front of this one to get the interested public to go home from boredom....that's when I stood up as people were starting to leave...the people filtering out...turned around...came back in...and stayed to listen. I also shamed them for treating minors students and farmers whilst the disciplinarian bullied and punished the students....i stopped that. On my way in to the meeting state police stood guard and stared at me on my way in as I parked my old diesel truck....I'm a big guy but another monster of a farm boy who's 6'6 600 lbs got out of my passenger side. After I told the board how it was....an attorney stood up in front of me...i was completely unaware of his presence ...announced himself as Esquire such and such ...said everything i stated was truth and he would represent the boys in question....when i left the state troopers who were guarding the event...would not make eye contact with me... I raised my arms and boomed "anyone got anything to say now fellas?" ...silence...the ACLU was notified right after ....the disciplinarian knew he'd acted criminally...tried to meet me with opposition...I stated his training knowledge and pursuit that were used in not only a predatory way but now in that auditorium he was now not the only expert in that venue...... red neck out. P.s. nothing against law enforcement...in fact I had many family members and friends out of the same barracks these troopers were dispatched from for clarity...but the good guys aren't ever bullies....these guys tried to intimidate...that didn't go well for them...furthermore when you bring a guy with you who is not only tall ....600lbs....and extremely mobile hes a power house...and the rules are just different for that guy...if he sits down and says no...its no.....if you want to try to move him its advisable to keep him a willing participant lol

That's sad that people have to get worked up over something as simple as a tractor in the parking lot. It's also good that people like yourself stand up for what is right. Thank you!
