One of the finest country songs ever written by one of the most overlooked singer-songwriters in American music. Newbury had three times more talent than any cookie-cutter clown on the country charts today and yet he is literally unknown to most music fans today. Glad to find him on youtube. Jerry Lee Lewis had a great hit with this song in 1969, but Newbury sings it as well any anyone, including the great Ronnie Milsap who had an obscure recording of this song as well.
The master lyricist. The man who could paint a picture of your soul in your mind using your feelings a canvas and your own memories as a brush. There will never be another. Rest in peace Mickey.
Mickey is one of the greatest singer songwriters who ever lived. I knew him in Nashville at Acuff-Rose Publishing. Please listen to “Just Dropped In,” “Wish I Was,” and more. I miss Mickey.😢
Dozens of artists recorded Mickey's compositions and these songs charted before he recorded them, but in my opinion Mickey's tracks were the absolute best.
Agree. His lyrics were marvelous, he was a master at painting pictures and stirring emotion! And when he sang them so beautifully to his wonderful melodies, it was a rare treat!
I appreciate reading the comments here. Other than on Harlequin Melodies, Mickey retained artistic control. He was fierce about that. And it was all worth it, no matter how much popular success it may have cost him, he always stayed true to his muse.
A total revelation....just when you think you've seen them all, here's another great artist....took 15 seconds of this video to realise this guy is completely brilliant,,,I kmew this song from Jerry Lee Lewis's version, didn't know who wrote it...what a masterful performance...I salute you Mickey Newbury, RIP.
I am ashamed to say that I only came here because of the song'Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings' But Wow! What an artist. I will be listening to this cat a lot from now on. Thank you for posting this treasure Cuthbert...Consider yourself subscribed.
Mickey was a dear friend to Joey and I. We miss him. There's only a hand full of great writers who can touch the heart of another writer, Mickey was at the top of that list. Our favorite Newbury song is " Lovers" about Jeannie Seeley and Hank Cochran.
Oh, I am so sad that Mickey passed away. I didn't know till I googled him this morning after listening to Jerry Lees version of this great song. My favorite of Mickey's is "sunshine". I am going to try to find a youtube of it right now. Don't forget this great song of Mickey's.
A friend introduced me to Mickey's music way back in the early '70's. I have loved his music since - his voice is (was) one of God's heavenliest ever.....
Just discovered this talented singer songwriter thru a book I was reading by Lavyrie Spenser "Sweet Memories" for the song. Google it and him. So glad I did! RIP and sing with the angels
this was the first song i ever learned for acoustic guitar back in 1996 i did kenny rogers version first then years later i heard newbury's and they are both fucking awesome thanks mickey you were a great songwriter and artist!!!
@slydogmania Nice Comments. Mickey is a sadly overlooked genius from the 60's. His songs were hits for others, but I never heard anyone perform a Newbury song better than Mickey himself.
A national treasure; America should be proud of a man who was one of the greatest singer/sonwriters of our times. Sleep sweetly, Mickey; you are sorely missed.
This is from a album called:Looks Like Rain (1969) Among one of the best "concept" album ever made, along whit Van Morrisons:Astral Weeks,The Beach Boys:Pet Sound and The Beatles:Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band....etc. This is a Magic album.Buy It.
The tapes weren't in a fire-they were erased by Elektra. But all of his CD's are available in the box set "Mickey Newbury Collection"...great remastering job

Funny, I’ve been saying for many years that in my opinion Jerry Lee Lewis’s performance of this gem is one of the greatest country music performances ever recorded.
This song is about Willie Nelson's daughter. Which is why Willie wrote 'I Wouldn't Cross The Road To Say 'Goodbye'. A shame America's two finest writers and performers crossed. Newbury's train songs (Waylon) became Jerry Jeff's (Willie) but Mickey never ventured onstage much thereafter. I side with Mickey, absolute genius.
Could we call this now? Johnny Cash's 1968 Variety Show on ABC is immensely underappreciated. June Carter Cash. The Statler Brothers. Carl Perkins. Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. Gordon Lightfoot. Linda Ronstadt. And Mickey Newbury among other Musical Guests. Insanely stacked Talent Roster!😁🎤💃🎼🎵🎶🎸🎹🎻🥁B.W.
Like I've always said about Mickey....Out on the Avenue, we were all Mick Jagger and Johnnie Cash and Waylon and big and bad and kick ass, but no one would ever admit the real truth....when we stumbled home at 4am, we were all really Mickey Newbury deep down inside. (Buy Mickey's Box Set, you will NOT regret it! Then buy everything else.)MY favorite CD? "Lulled by the Moonlight".
A good friend of Mickey's sang this song for a few of us at a get-together. He just winked at us when he sang that line. Just to emphasize Mickey's genius and soul.
“Baby’s packed her soft things and she’s left me, she’s left me, she’s left me ...” - From Jerry Lee Lewis’s incredible rendition of this awesome song.
Mickey's "American Trilogy" came first of course, and was the best--with that "Nashharmonic" backing. Elvis did nothing new with it at all--except give Mickey more recognition out there. Then, he got help from Waylon's plug in "Luchenbach Texas"
Nice performance. If you liked this video you owe it to yourself to hear Jerry Lee Lewis’s studio version - I consider it to be one of the best country music performances ever recorded.
Excellent, just the best. However I wish the poster would list when and where this was recorded for the record. No disrespect intended, but it would be helpful for all these artists and performances.
