*TIP: Big Sirens, such as air raid sirens can go off once per day as a test that they always work. If you hear one single siren go off and then nothing, its probably nothing.* *If you here it go off more then once, or it just keeps going, then its always something real. Prolonged siren or repeating sirens always mean real danger!* Sirens exist for a reason, dont take them for granted.

A quick guide (i used to be really interested in sirens, please correct me): ~20 seconds: probably a test, but keep listening ~1+ minutes solid tone (excluding wind up and down): alert, used for natural disasters and other things of similar nature ~1+ minutes of wavering pitch: ATTACK: used for extreme disaster warning, and fire. 30s--2 minutes of a HARSH alternating pitch(hi-lo): mostly used for fires. Harsh Pulsing sound: just exists, doesnt really mean anything to my knowledge

I've seen a flight attendant, talking about any siren that she may hear in the plane, and the comment thread in it complain that the flight attendant will have the context for it. While this is true, these guys are a bit brain dead for not realizing that if you hear a siren, no matter what it is about, that if it is really fuckin loud, you get the fuck out. Like, fuck the context. Even if the siren wasn't directed towards me or anyone down there, hearing something so loud would make me leave fast. It really doesn't take that much common sense to know when you have to fucking leave an area. But apparently, for some people, they still need more than 2 brain cells for that..

Even though it was menacing and we tried to get away , we were still walking in wrong direction untill a local came running to us and asked us to move to higher ground instead of that direction. We immediately complied and just like this, after third siren, water gushed like anything. Back in the 90s, pre internet. I did a lot of climbing in the Cascades. Visited the Colorado Front Range. Was going to hike Long's Peak the next day and asked a ranger at Rocky Mountain National Park about local objective hazards. He said be below treeline by noon due to regular and daily afternoon thunderstorms. Took his advice and started my hike before dawn. Was descending and approaching the treeline by 11am. Sure enough, sometime after 12, storms began rolling in. Had I not asked, I would have started much later and been on the summit when the storms started. Though I had technical climbing experience and Long's Peak was relatively easy for me, that bit of local knowledge was critical and could have avoided a dangerous situation.

I used to be a flight attendant for 6 years. Any siren, or alarm or loud sound inside the aircraft always made us alert and spring into action. Hey Mr Ballen, I live quite close to this dam, about 10 minutes away in Taupo. It used to be quite a popular swimming spot amongst kids (including myself) in the area, hence the dirt trail that slowly developed there. After this incident happened it shook up our entire town, I remember every year we had Trustpower employees, who were the people that owned the dam, come too our school and give a talk on not swimming in that area and why its so dangerous. Since then they have put up new fences and signage around the tracks and the surrounding area to deter people from swimming. Thanks for all the amazing content you make, it was quiet cool to hear about a case so close to home.
@vaskylark

Maybe they should not open the dam on certain days of the week and then people can swim on those days since it seems to be such a big draw. In reality they shouldn't be swimming on a river, they're just asking for trouble and drowning deaths, but closing the dam on say Saturday and Sunday might not be a bad idea.

@@mike02454 what you seem to fail to understand, is rivers have stronger currents then some beaches, and it’s physically impossible to swim in some of those currents. I’ve been caught in one when there was no life gaurds, and if my adrenaline didn’t kick in, I’d be dead right now. And that was just us going for a friendly nice swim in a “safe “ river that was actually open for swimming. Rivers are not safe and people should NOT swim in them. Me too! I'm not saying I would have realized it in the moment but I figured out early in this story that it involved the opening if a damn. Siren = danger. You hear it once, turn around but three times? What's really tragic however is that thus likely would have been avoided had someone not stolen the warning sign. That person has blood on their hands and I truly hope karma shows them.

As a kiwi, there are lots of secret swimming spots. If you hear a siren, RUN. Sirens do not go off in NZ for no reason and likely is a tsunami warning or a damn release warning, especially if it is high pitched. Also where they had been swimming was the Aratiatia Rapids which is a majorly bad area to swim in from roughness and sudden changes in the water level as it also comes off of the huka falls which are giant falls. Also, Following Rachael's death, DOC replaced the stolen sign, blocked the unofficial track with a wooden fence and a second steel gate on top of the cliff. The issue had been raised by Mercury Energy “on a number of occasions” before Rachael’s death, as it wanted the council’s harbormaster to enforce the bylaw. Mercury Energy, which controls the dam, wanted DOC to erect new signs to state “no swimming” rather than just a warning about the risk. In response to Mercury’s assertion about the bylaw, the Waikato Regional Council said it had no power to ban swimming in the river. The bylaw was designed as a mechanism to regulate boating activity, according to the council’s legal advice, not ban swimming in an area which boats cannot even access. Lots of people still swim there outside of the dam times which is not advised and it is really hard to get down there now, they cut down the ropes which lead down there.

that's what i don't get, you mentioned tsunamis, and i would assume that NZ is a place where basically everyone is taught about the sirens when they are kids. so i just don't understand how they could just ignore that type of warning when they should of known that it meant danger was coming. and i mean, i live in the desert, 12 hours from the ocean, in a place where we don't get any major weather, earthquakes you can feel, or anything that would require a early warning system. there are a couple military bases near by, but they never test their sirens. so we don't have any sirens, tests, or anything like that, so we aren't taught about them. but the first time i was fishing on a lake as a kid and heard a siren go off, i knew it wasn't a good thing, and it only took a few seconds for me to guess what it was signaling, and by the time it went off again we were already out of the water having lunch and waiting to watch the water lvl drop.

To be fair I'm a kiwi and spent around a month ignoring a siren that went off once or twice a day when I moved to a rural property, turns out the alarm in the village fire station traveled really well over the fields. I'm not saying that ignoring it in this case was a good wise decision but I can see how they could have dismissed it without seeing the sign and being to far away from the shore for it to be a tsunami warning.

Also being a bit more aware of the local geography and conditions before you go is something they didn't do. Generally if there's a dam, don't stick around too long in the area immediately downstream and run inland if you hear a siren, because dams often release water. A similar situation happened where I live recently, a man died after being washed away for failing to heed a similar siren.

This is pretty much exactly what happened to my little brother at Caplinger Mills in Missouri. He had just gotten home from his second tour in Iraq. He was doing a lot of traveling and he and a friend were canoeing at the Mill. They got out to swim by the dam, and my brother thought he could make it over the falls that were there, mind you we had grown up being taken to beautiful areas of the Ozarks with a variety of falls. People tried to blame the fact that they had beer on them for his death. What I think my brother did not realize was that further up the river was a larger dam that was opened every so often causing the water to rise and the currents to strengthen. When he went over he was pushed all the way to the bottom and held down by the current. He was already gone when a brave soul actually jumped off the bridge overhead when he noticed what had happened and pulled my brother to shore. Sgt Jason Corbin, 82nd Airborne

I live in the Waikato in NZ and recently went on a trip away and on the way home we stopped to watch the dam opening; it really is incredible just how fast and how much the water rushes through and fills up the riverbed below. I felt quite unsettled watching the sheer volume and power from the roadside lookout, so I can only imagine how scary it must’ve been for them seeing the massive powerful cascade barrelling towards them in an otherwise very quiet and peaceful location.
