*Series:* ru-vid.com/group/PLzcoQ_vebs-T2HiyFRu1TzCiioISLXLRq _Elizabeth Bennet had been obliged, by the scarcity of gentlemen, to sit down for two dances; and during part of that time, Mr. Darcy had been standing near enough for her to overhear a conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, who came from the dance for a few minutes to press his friend to join it._ _“Come, Darcy,” said he, “I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.”_ _“I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. At such an assembly as this, it would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.”_ _“I would not be so fastidious as you are,” cried Bingley, “for a kingdom! Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life as I have this evening; and there are several of them, you see, uncommonly pretty.”_ _“You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,” said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet._ _“Oh, she is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld! But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say very agreeable. Do let me ask my partner to introduce you.”_ _“Which do you mean?” and turning round, he looked for a moment at Elizabeth, till, catching her eye, he withdrew his own, and coldly said, “She is tolerable: but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me.”_ _Mr. Bingley followed his advice. Mr. Darcy walked off; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him. She told the story, however, with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous._ *_Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 3_*

I had not seen these early ones or the foreign ones but they are good. I know 95's by heart and love it. The latest one interesting for it had them walking as they talked. And Lizzy and Charlotte were sitting under a bleacher. I loved that in this one there were lots of dancers. It was a community ball and most of the community was there. Thanks for posting.

It is funny how none of the adaptations does justice to Darcy's sentence: "You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner." He simply doesn't enjoy the idea of dancing with total strangers, which says a lot about his character.

1995 is the only one that actually keeps Elizabeth's reaction. Her reaction to Darcy's slight is to laugh at him. This does a lot to help the audience understand her character, and sets the tone for her dynamic with Darcy. I don't understand why no other version kept it.

Yeah, not just Bingley, but I feel like Darcy was made way too spiteful in that version of the scene. In the book, Darcy is an introvert at a party of extroverts who for the most part have all agreed he is a proud snob because he isn't as social as they are. Darcy is drained of energy and upset because he's out of his comfort zone and being judged severely for not matching the mood. Bingley asking him to dance is basically his final straw. After having all these strangers telling him to lighten up, his best friend (the one person at the party who actually does know what kind of person Darcy is) asking the same thing of him makes him snap. Any other day Bingley may have left Darcy alone, knowing how apprehensive these kind of situations make Darcy, but he's so giddy and spellbound from meeting Jane that he's oblivious to his friend's discomfort. Darcy's upset that Bingely's euphoria has made him as pushy as all the other party goers when usually Bingley could be trusted as his closest confidant. Darcy utters such harsh comments because his frustration has reached it boiling point. It's not about him finding Elizabeth unattractive, I doubt he even looked at her much since he was trying his best to stay in the corner and keep his head down, he's just trying to express his frustration with the whole party in general. (it doesn't make what he says right but as an introvert myself I can at least sympathize with his anxiety.) In this version, not only does Darcy seemed to genuinely find Elizabeth unattractive, he seems to almost take sadistic glee in describing her "ugliness."

1995 version is by far, my favorite. When Lizzie overhears Darcy and Bingley talking about her, I think her reaction is the best. Walking by Darcy, subtly letting him know she heard him and isn’t bothered and to top it off, talks about what she overheard with Charlotte, essentially laughing at him (or at least, making him wonder if they really are laughing at him). All the little moments like this make me love this version more and more each time I watch it. 2005 takes everything to the extreme, which in some ways bugs me. I admit it’s easier for one to tell that there is a distinct class difference between Darcy and the Bennetts, but in reality, the Bennetts were not as poor as this version makes them out to be. They were going to struggle financially after Mr Bennett would pass away, but they were able to wear nice clothes that period accurate, but they just weren’t as lavish and fashionably up to date like Darcy and the Bingleys. I think the “these are country bumpkins” is a little too much and in your face, but I get why they wanted to portray it as such. I do, however, like the liveliness and crowded feeling at this dance, which the latter I feel was definitely accurate in a lot of dance halls, and I do like Lizzie’s reaction to overhearing Darcy and Bingley. She gives off this nonchalant, I don’t care vibe, like 1995 Lizzie, but handles it differently and I think it’s an appropriate reaction for her as well as 1995’s Lizzie
@LadyOndyne
@LadyOndyne 11 месяцев назад
I actually like the 2005 but I prefer th 1995 as well. The "dirty vibe" in every shot of the 2005 one puts me off, like they didn't clean the houses, everyone smelled funny, and so. Portraing the Bennets almost as the english hillbillys wasn't the greatest choice either. And the hair and dresses! Of all the movie only a bunch or people are kind of "regency appropiate"; I will never understand the Hollywood mania of not doing proper hairstyles, or putting people over 35 in clothes from 40 years ago, as if age made you lose your sense of aesthetics and taste for fashion. The 1995 one does do well with Lady Katherine and Mrs. Bennet in that sense.

@@LadyOndyne I saw a clip before where they said the reason why Elizabeth's updo is a little more modern to make her stand out from the rest of the cast, to portray her as a bit different and 'progressive'(lacking a better term). And this was also a choice made to make her more relatable to the viewers. About the way why their house is kept in that state, the director made it the way it is because they wanted you to feel homey. If I remember it right, I think they wanted it to really look like a 'real life' house. Cause when I watch 1995 (which I absolutely love rewatching), it does feel like a set. But when I watch the 2005, their house feels like home. It feels alive. But which ever one, they're both great.

Firth is a lovely actor. He isn't my Darcy, however: I tend to agree with my father's opinion, when we watched the mini-series together: "he is grumpy," my father commented. My Darcy is Olivier; and, though I commit blasphemy, the 1940 version, though the furthest from Austen, has always been the one I love most. The connection and tiny bits of by-play between the actors is lovely; Mary Boland and Edmund Gwenn give me layers of relationship as well as wit in that important opening scene at Longbourne; Frieda Inescourt is such a perfect, such a naturally-disdainful and graceful Caroline Bingley; and for me, Melville Cooper is a perfect Mr. Collins, from his fiddly mannerisms to the funny little musical motif that's given to him. None of the other versions I've seen have, for me, that particular quality of grace and humor and sense of knowing and living together.

2005 has a heavier mood than I imagine Austen aspired to create. That said, I am fine with the 2005 "she is tolerable" scene. The 1995 version is the most enjoyable to me. Lizzy passing Darcy by with her "I don't give a sh** what you just said about me" smile then retelling the tale of Darcy's rude slight to her best friend on her own terms and looking his direction, don't we all wish we could do that instead of withdrawing? I will always hold that in my heart as sublime presence of mind. Additionally the 1995 scene really helped us see Darcy "notice" Lizzy and moved the story along with ease. I have to admit there is no direction in the book on this scene the 2005 version would be a more likely scenario Lizzy is witty and strong but also human and Darcy insulted her and she would feel the slight, most people would not be able to recover so well as in the 1995 version - but oooh I can dream! I found her way too subdued compared to how Lizzie is described in the book, and Jane in this version is incredibly insipid. The end scene where Lizzie and Darcy walk together seems quite passionless. A little more energy and it would have been great.
@JennyferPepin

@adrianaloborec2205 I disagree entirely. In the book we see a lot of Elizabeth’s internal dialogue which is obviously going to be more extreme than how she behaves outwardly. Ehle did a great job of hinting at those rebellious thoughts and feelings while outwardly acting proper and polite, rather than just being overtly snarky. It works way better.
@appleish5043
@appleish5043 10 месяцев назад
@@MissCaraMintI agree with you on Ehle’s portrayal of Lizzie. Her little reactions here and there show how mischievous and rebellious her inner thoughts are. And she is shown to be a mature young lady, she ought to act like one. So Ehle acted her perfectly. Love the 1995 series to death!

1980 had the most age-appropriate cast-I loved that Lizzie and Darcy, and particularly loved Lady Catherine and Mr. collins in that version and thought that Jane was the prettiest and sweetest actress to play that role. Having said that, Colin Firth was a devastating Darcy and I liked Jennifer Elle’s Elizabeth very much. The 2005 version might as well have been a different story since it strayed so far from the book, even though Mathew McFayden is a wonderful actor. Yeah, I probably spelled his name wrong… 😅

It's quite surprising how a tv adaptation can have such a long lasting effect, like the 1995 version. I like its static style of filming (though this has more to do with "tv" style than pure artistic choice, but it kind of fits the stlye of the era) and its sense of humor. I love the Bennett parents, Mr. Collins, Charlotte and Lady Catherine de Bourgh in that version, too, not just Lizzie and Mr Darcy. The cinematorgaphy of the the 2005 is of course much better than any of the others, and that's understandable. It's not a tv version and the technology itself devoloped a lot in the 90s. But I just don1t understand some of the scenes in the movie version. Why the big proposal-refusal scene was shot outside in the rain? That alone was a bit too much and that's a central scene in the story...

In my opinion Colin Firth is the ONLY actor able to portray Darcy with as much careless arrogance and believability as Laurence Olivier. He is also very handsome. While the assembly ball may have been historically accurate, I was shocked by how seedy and impoverished it all looked - costumes, setting, people.

I appreciate the 1995 one, but the 2005 one is my favorite. Mostly because it's more beautiful to look at and uses the visual nature of the medium to its advantage. I generally don't care whether an adaptation is accurate, as long as any changes made still make sense in the context of the story. But if you're just going to make a film exactly like the book... why not just read the book?
