She’s All That introduced American teenagers to high-stakes bets in their high school halls. If Freddie Prinze Jr. was gonna make the dorky Laney Boggs prom queen, he was gonna need to give her an extreme makeover because as it is, she’s ugly - she has glasses, a bad haircut and she doesn’t tweeze her eyebrows. This movie shows us her transformation in a highly entertaining 90 minutes. At first, audiences must sit there and think, “There’s no way,” but by the end you’re seeing she’s actually pretty hot and has a decent shot at beating Taylor Vaughn for prom queen. So sit back and relax and enjoy my video essay and make sure to watch till the end as I edit together a special “what if” ending. Also, be sure to go re-watch this iconic movie from 1999 that was made by Miramax Films.

"talkhouse", you misunderstood. laney was never portrayed as being ugly. she was supposed to be "weird and inaccessible". freddie said that's harder to work with than being ugly

Very good comment. You're right, this guy really did not understand the moral of the story and honestly, really disrespected the great ideas this movie offers despite it's shortcomings.

yeah i think people just assume she was supposed to be ugly because of the 'glasses + ponytail' trope being 'dorky' (and not another teen movie making fun of that and how 'tragic' it was), but they never say she's ugly in the movie...they even say during the makeover the 'new, not improved, but different'

It should be noted that by the end of the movie Zach doesn't love Laney for what she's become, but for what she always was. It's very clear when he says "I made that bet before I knew you, before I knew myself." I'd like to think Laney takes him back mainly for that, because she did change him far more than he changed her.

Ironically I think she was always all that as you said but she needed someone to bring out other facets of her personality and I think she brought out the better part of freddie who was very shallow and empty until she came along. She was the better person to take him back. And he knew it.

I definitely agree with this video, she should have said no and she was all that from the beginning, it's freddie who couldn't see it in her until he had a transformation. But just cause he changed doesn't mean she has to accept him and settle

I disagree though. She does not have a valid reason to reject him. The bet? Yes, only to make her the prom queen... elevate her status? Make her his? It was a noble goal masqueraded as a bet. And she's not narrowminded. She can look past the bet and see that he has feelings for her.

The point was never that she was ugly, it was that she didn’t fit in. Her clothing and rude attitude made people dislike her, much in the same way that Eliza Dolittle was never ugly, she was just not up on etiquette, not dressed according to the upper class fashion of her time, and very defensive, abrasive, and rude.

The thing zack didn't transform just the looks in Laney, but he also opened her up to the outside world. That was the major transformation that he did. Laney as well transformed Zack as well. And as he said the became more than a couple. Laney became Zack's Best Friend.

You forgot to mention the fact that the prom dance turns into "West Side Story." The "kids" all seem to have taken "music video dance" lessons from Paula Abdul. Also, when the "kids" are in high school, they never seem to attend classes (except Laney, who attends art class, which isn't really a class). They just seem to walk around the hallways a lot, and hang out in their "Beverly Hills 90210 Memorial Courtyard." Their school is unusual, in that it seems to have a shortage of actual TEACHERS, which I think most schools do have. (I say "kids" because most of the actors are twentysomethings playing "movie high school kids." They bear no resemblance to actual high school kids in California, Kentucky, or elsewhere.)

If you listen closely to Usher during the dance scene, he explains that they've been working on the choreographed routine which explains why they are so good at it.

Riiiiiiiiiiight. I wonder how Usher did that, considering when he's in school, he never leaves the radio booth. It must have been crowded in there, with all those other kids wedged into the booth, watching Usher teach them the dance moves. But I suppose the kids had plenty of time to practice their dance moves. It's not like they ever had any classes to attend at their school.

Yeah, I’d like the movie better if it ended less cliche and she walked away. The symmetry of her becoming beautiful to him and him becoming ugly to her when they really get to know each other would be poetic. Then she could go to college without some pretty boy stalker who will always make her feel she wasn’t good enough and end up maybe meeting someone better suited that she could relate to that made her feel valued and was intellectually stimulating. I mean, obviously that was never going to happen. It’s just a nice thought that a girl’s happy ending isn’t taking a guy because at least he likes her and that alone is reason enough because she should be happy someone wants her.

u r some fierce soul.....but i have been in laney's place in real life........not that i did'nt knew my worth.....i knew i can pull over any look..........but if u want to know why laney let him in, well in my case , he has'nt asked , but i do have a soft corner & feel like it was the dream time of my life, as i opened my heart & enjoyed few days with him, so he must be the only dream person.........but life has other plans.....he regrets,but has'nt showed up, but i have healed enough that if he ever comes up..........i can say that I do not know , cz It's like , it feels unfair........bz my life does not depends on ur realizations , do they?.....i am hurt n angry..........but i don't know if i'd ever stop having love in my heart , for that person.?
