She 'schooled' me!! street photography in Edinburgh. Ft. Fujifilm xf56mm 1.2 WR

Edinburgh might be one of the best places in the UK for street photography!
In this video, I head up to Scotland to have a nose around one of the prettiest cities in the UK.
I wanted to try my brand new Fujifilm xf56mm 1.2 on the XT4 to see if it was a viable lens for street photography, I also used the new Fujifilm xf33mm 1.4 WR lens.

Hey, Gareth! It’s Toni. I definitely had fun and learned a lot from you. I even spent the rest of the day trying to taking photos of Edinburgh from that framed perspective. It was lovely meeting you! Love all the shots here but the one with the lamppost and last shot are my personal favorites!

Really liked the image of Tony thru the bin, the one where she is looking at you almost incidentally. And of course the piper close-up, very dynamic and soulful!

Great video as always Gareth. Favourite was the first B/W with reflection in the puddle. There were some great shots of the girl as well, she seemed a natural in front of the camera and takes a mean photo herself :)

I love all the shots Gareth but the last one of the bagpiper is just awesome.. and I know what you mean about being upset about having to leave Edinburgh I was close to tears when I had to leave last time I was there but I had to come home all the way over here in Australia.. can’t wait to get back it’s a beautiful and special place..

Hi Gareth, Great video, i love Edinburgh too but have only been to the centre once many years ago. I liked the first shot the best, im a sucker for that kind of silhouette great composition. I also preferred the second through the bin of Toni, I felt that her head position was more intriguing than the first. I also really liked the "posed" shots on the monument too. Thanks for sharing.

Had to watch this, Edinburgh is my auld home toon! I now live just outside of Sydney in the Blue Mountains so it was lovely to see some street photography and places I know well. Leaving Edinburgh will make you cry! It is an absolutely gorgeous town and that Royal Mile at night is unbeatable, especially if the haar rolls in. Great to see you interacting with the public. Great shots come just as much from the personality of the photographer as much as the skill of the tog, you proved that brilliantly here and live unscripted. Bravo.

Always like to see my home city featured and I think you got a few great shots. The last one on Edinburgh's disgrace(monument) and the look away shot with Toni through the bin and the Dugald Stewart monument on the left were my favourites. By the way it is the Royal Mile not the Golden Mile which would have more Blackpool Rock and candy floss.

Glad you enjoyed Edinburgh, I love this city for street photos and moody ones especially in rain, thick fog/mist or snow. They just opened christmess market and its super cool at night for photos + any light bloom filter since there is so many lights everywhere ;) You should come one day when free, I would join you with my Fuji x-t1 + 35mm f1.4 or maybe 18mm f2 depeneds haha

Gareth. Just wanna say thanks. I have been taking pics for 45 years for no other reason than I like images and people watching, but over the last 5-10 years I lost that passion and could not see, (The photographers version of writers block). After watching a couple of your vids I managed to get inspired enough to spend 3 hours with the camera. Not looked at my results yet, but I enjoyed the process of taking the images. Thanks.

I was stationed in Scotland in the early 80s. We made several trips to Edinburgh and it has always been my most sincerest wish to go back with my camera. Seeing your shots just makes me want to go even more, but life has a funny way of dampening those dreams. I particularly liked the shots with Toni and the interaction you two had. Also the street piper. New subscriber and great video!

Fujifilm has incorporated 8 elements with the lens focus group that move when focusing. Thus they have managed to minimise aberration fluctuation from infinity to MOD, by moving the aperture together with the lens focus group. To move the focus group, a DC motor is used for autofocus. They have incorporated three bearing mechanisms with the DC motor for smoother autofocus performance. The bearing mechanics ensure highly accurate control of the DC motor. The posed portraits aren't street photography. The problem with the candid shots shot through the park benches is that the apparent subject (people standing at a distance) is uninteresting. To try to make an uninteresting scene a better photo by framing it within an unusual prop (park bench) doesn't work -- the subject is still not interesting. For street photos, I recommend first finding an interesting subject and situation and then choose the framing and composition.

Or find a compelling background and potential lighting and wait for an interesting subject. In any case, it is important to have an interesting subject/situation in street photography. I do like a couple of the posed portraits (but not the unusually framed ones as it distracts from the model instead of enhancing her).

Great shots! Every image is a chance to learn. I tend to ask people for portraits, especially if I’m using a wider lens (since I’ll have to get close). My go to phrase is, “hello, I’m a street photographer, would I be able to take a free portrait of you?”. Been having a lot of success that way. Not everyone has a lot of time to chat.
