My opinion: Marilyn should have been the only person to ever wear that dress. The museum was insane for doing this. Kim also got a lock of Marilyn’s hair which I think is very creepy and for what reason? Why is she entitled to a literal piece of Marilyn’s body? Even decades after her death she’s still being treated like an object… so sad

Fashion historian Abby Cox did a video about this and had a massive fit. Apparently, putting on a one-of- a-kind, culturally significant, and politically significant historical dress is a HUGE no-no in the conservation world. The process of wearing any historical garment degrades it a bit ('cus it's old and fragile) much less this unique one. According to Abby, even the 'imprint' (i.e. body chemistry, and shape) left behind in the dress had historical significance since it's one of the last links to Marylin herself (she died months after wearing this dress). We've lost a bit of that link now, because Marylin's body imprint in the dress was replaced with Kim Kardashian's. Apparently they dont even make that fabric anymore because it's fragile. Ripley's "Museum" ought to be ashamed of themselves for allowing this. What an incredibly irresponsible thing to do, especially for nothing more than a publicity stunt. (Edited for re-wording and more detail)

The biggest issue I have with this choice and many Kardashian choices is the distortion of reality. Kim has publicly talked about the weight she had to lose to fit in the dress and the effort it took, but she didn’t actually fit in it. So in addition to damaging an iconic garment, the public’s perspective of it is now skewed. It is a disservice to Marilyn’s legacy.

This dress is iconic because it was a 'message' in clothing form. The fact that Marilyn was wearing it to sing to the president, the way she was wearing it, the moral society standards of the 60's, all contributed to shock value of that message. Since society now has very different standards, the internet is filled with KK in a lot less than a dress, the only message that was loud and clear was 'the arrogant entitlement', which considering KK is not shocking either.
@roggenmischbrot
@roggenmischbrot 2 года назад
My problem is that the dress was specifically made for Marilyn's body which means only she was supposed to wear it. Nobody else. Now that Kim Kardashian wore it, I feel like something special was taken away from the dress. I don't know how to articulate this but perhaps someone understands what I mean. If Kim Kardashian had made a dress similar to Marilyns for her own body type, then I would have loved her look!! But wearing the real dress is creating a lot of publicity I guess... (I've also encountered people that keep defending her claiming that it is more eco friendly to "reuse" the dress. But do the Kardashians really look like as if they cared for the environment? I don't think so.)

I think I understand what you mean, and I think that's exactly why this particular dress had been chosen and not another one from Marilyn's. Not only is it iconic because it fitted her body like a glove and you could see the imprint of her curves on the dress itself, but also because of the cultural weight it held. It was the last dress Marilyn was filmed in, was seen in. It was especially made for her and for the special occasion of JFK's birthday, his last one before he also died. It was the dress that inflamed the newspapers, because of Marilyn's appearance of course but not only that: it triggered rumours of a relationship between Hollywood's superstar and the president of the USA. They were the two most popular people of the time, two gorgeous young accomplished and glamorous people. And they both died shortly after this video of Marilyn tipsily singing "Happy Birthday". That's how significant that dress was, that's why it was a museum piece, not a garment from your local thrift store. As for the eco friendly argumentation, I don't understand it. How is it eco friendly? Kim K had a replica, she came out of a car, she lives in a villa and has silicon implants. From what I've read, her businesses are not particularly interested in eco-ethics. I'm not sure "eco friendly" would be used to describe her way of living.

I completely agree. I’m a huge Marilyn fan and quite protective of her legacy, I was so angry and disappointed when I saw Kim wear it. I believe that it’s an iconic piece of American history and should be in the Smithsonian museum, treated with the respect it and Marilyn deserves, especially since Marilyn died about 2 months after she wore it and it was her last public appearance. If you watch the video where they try the dress on Kim and it doesn’t fit they’re being so rough with the dress and rubbing their hands roughly on the delicate Swarovskis and with the material which is over 60 years old and fragile. This is not a dress for playing dress up. While Kim looked gorgeous I don’t see why she couldn’t have worn the replica dress the whole night. Also, while I mean no disrespect to Kim I don’t think she deserves to wear it, to remove Marilyn’s DNA and ruin it. I just think it’s totally disrespectful to Marilyn and demonstrates that nothing, not even historical items like Marilyn’s dress, are out of bounds for the rich and famous. Many museums had to change the way people could interact with certain pieces to preserve them, even if it diminishes our experience as viewers. And I feel the same way about this. Why even take the chance, the risk of the dress being damaged when she could wear the replica or even better, make it her own skin tone match? It was very irresponsible.

I've read that dress was dyed to match Marilyn's skin tone and was made like second skin so she can wear it without underwear. Because it became a second skin on top of her naked skin it moved beautifully with her body, you could see every gorgeous line of her figure. Kim K had spanx and bra on so for example in the armpit area you can see weird bulges and wrinkles because of her tight undergarments. Kim K looked really bad in that color dress but especially with that hair. About her lies that she didn't use anything on her skin. I can see there is a self-tanner, moisturizer (without it her psoriasis would have been an ashy dry mess) and clearly visible body makeup. She decided to attach herself to Marilyn who is #1 american star of all time by wearing 2 of her dresses and carrying her award on the biggest day of NYC fashion by stretching her dresses with her artificial behind that is much bigger than Marilyn's, tainting the dresses with her self-tanner, lotion and makeup, ruining overall look by half-assing her hair at the last minute going from black to platinum in 1 day throwing it in a slick multi-colored bun that has nothing to do with Marilyn's iconic look. I'm not even talking about those horrid stripper shoes she chose to wear. Total disrespect. She is a narcissist and totally out of touch, but what about all those ppl from museum and MM's estate who allowed this to happen? This is sacrilege to Marilyn's true fans

That dress was made for Marilyn and for her alone, it is a piece of her history... She looked like a godess, every curve, every soft line was complimented by that dress on Marylin. The dress blended into her body becoming her second skin. My god, how beautiful she looks in photos, pure feminine energy, very inspiring! Now KimK is no doubt the epitome of looking polished - she has all the money in the world to look her best, especially on Met Gala, but... that dress looked out of place on her :( KimK has her own special style and vibe, so this attempt to channel MM was a bad idea from the very start. I hope she felt good on that Met Gala, but from esthetic, artistic point of view it was a failure. I want to point out a truly successful example of a look that fully channels KimK's vibe - her "Wet" dress created by Thierry Mugler for 2019 Met Gala. I watched a video with the analysis of her appearance in this dress at metgala, the video suggests that she wore the real dress at metgala, where she appeared to have to be very careful in the way she was walking, always covering her bum, cuz the zipper behind was not zipped but was held on few attached threads tied together, and later in the evening she changed to a replica that was fitted to her body so she was no longer wearing the white coat to cover her unzipped exposed bum like before, cuz now the replica dress was perfectly fitting her and she could move, pose and take pictures with ease, also look how her chest differs in metgala versus in photoshoot and after pictures. Who are these public figures to compromise basic morality and good human behavior? I could care less if it was a fashion statement. People should be judged on the quality of their character and what they perpetuate, not what scandal they were in. Idk much about Marilyn, but this is not the story I want to teach to the future generations. Her singing in a sheer bodycon dress to a man she had an affair with, publicly, is so inappropriate. Sick to the stomach is what I feel when looking at Kim Kardashian. This "Marilyn" publicity stunt, or marketing method of hers shines the light on just how disrespectful, narcissistic and callous she is. Even if the dress had not been worn by the iconic and legendary Marilyn Monroe, I would still think it looks bad on Kim, because it does not suit her contrived, out of proportion body lines. She needs more scuplting and soft tailoring with some drama. Marilyn had a sweet delicate torso, which included more narrow and less muscular shoulders, as well as the rest of her body. She had ingenue essence and a natural uncontrived elegance, even though her own look as Marilyn was developed and created. Ms Kardashian exudes a trashy cut-throat quality that tarnishes the garment. The fact that she has placed, if not squeezed her own body into such a treasured piece, before only worn by Marilyn, has irrevocably soiled it physically and energetically. The garment is no longer Marilyn Monroe's, but another piece of fabric used and sullied by a power-hungry trollop. What a shame.

She has the money, I didn't understand why they could not recreate a dupe of the dress.

Kim did a bad thing. it was destructive to this artufact and if it was a publicity-marketing it certainly should have been banned by Anna Winter

Okay so both women are sex icons- but in different ways Marilyn’s sexuality empowered women- she was purposefully, you can see this in the fact the dress perfectly matched her skin tone. In addition, Marilyn’s sexuality wasn’t her only asset- she was an actress, could sing, had a good personality and was respected by both men and women. Kim on the other hand uses her sexuality just to make money- hence “skims”, her shape-wear brand where you too can achieve the Kim kardashian curve: oh did I mention she payed for hers. Kim in the dress feels cheap where as Marilyn felt impactful. It feels like Kim was trying to compare herself to Marilyn by wearing the dress but she doesn’t come close and isn’t respected in the same way Marilyn was which is why the rendition feels so ICKY!! - just my two sense 🤷‍♀️

I’m not a Marilyn fan, but not part of this seems ethical. If this is a historic manorial pice in memory to her passing I can imagine the pain her fans or loved ones would feel.

I am a grandma and I pretty sure I saw this dress on display in person at the Kent State fashion museum in Kent Ohio around 1973. I am a size 4 and I think a TR. Anyway the dress looked really small on the mannequin when I saw it. I am with Aly and other preservationists that think the dress should be protected. Nothing against KK, however she did have a replica and should have stayed with it. JMHO

Yeah...the rumors MM was a plus size couldn't have been true. At 35-23-35 she would have been a size 1 or a 3. But barely a 3. She'd have been in the junior size range. She wouldn't even have fit into the misses size range to make her a size 2.

Kim wearing that dress just left a bitter taste in my mouth😫 That dress is history personified, a snapshot that should have remained untouched. If she had worn an exact replica for the entire occasion, I would have thought it was the most brilliant idea, and something I wished I could have had the opportunity to do myself (with a healthy dose of jealousy alongside it☺️), a perfect homage to Marilyn… But she just *had* to wear the real dress, didn’t she 🙄 …she must be running out of things to buy…🤓

God it just rubs me the wrong way so hard. It feels like someone bought and took the Mona Lisa and made like a buzz feed diy collage by cutting it up. Like don’t touch masterpieces that have such fond and important memories attached to them.

Thank you so much for this video. My first thought was that this isn't right, but I didnt had that much background information to tell exactly why. And the other thing that bothers me, is that it looks like if kim is trying to be a star on a similar level or anything near then marylin.. but we all know that she is NOT.
