The doctor figured that out quickly and told her she could go to any clinic and ask for it. She went to the clinic and got medicine for her grandmothers cold and birth control pills. But the doctor learnt mandarin overnight cause he was fed up with the girl lying and the girl tried to tell her grandmother that the doctor is bad and gave her the wrong pills so the doctor confronted her and said in Chinese to the grandma “congrats your a grandma soon”

Plot twist; House didn't speak Mandarin on the first visit, he was just so annoyed that he went home and learned it overnight in case he had to deal with them again :P
Or he just learned the phrases he needed to. In this situation, all you would need to hear are phrases Involving colds and pregnancy, nouns of "I", "you", or "me" and "he" or "they" + look at a person's body language while they speak in order to guess properly and figure out that they are blaming you for prescribing the wrong medicine. (Such as learning like 2 or 3 phrases similar to "The doctor prescribed you the wrong medicine." Once you are certain you hear phrases that match 60-70% of the phrases you memorized, which involve that same topic, you can then confidently respond with the phrases you memorized) This is made easier in this situation because you're dealing with an adolescent who you already know is desperately hiding her pregnancy from her mother. So her body language in response to her own mistake makes it very easy to guess you are being blamed for prescribing the wrong medicine. Then, all he needs to respond with is a few phrases explaining the daughter being pregnant and that the medicine the mother ingested was some form of birth control. It sounds complicated, but it's not. The situation in this scene would only require one to learn 5-10 relevant phrases. All of which would be centered around the subjects of "Your daughter is pregnant, and she gave you birth control pills instead of your cold medicine ." Plus learning a few phrases concerning you being blamed. Which, judging by how House is characterized, he would definitely go out of his way to prepare those phrases in case the daughter screws up and tries to blame him in Mandarin. But as mentioned before, you would really only need to memorize 10 phrases, 15 maximum. Also as mentioned above, pay attention to the speaker's body language while actively listening for keywords from the phrases you memorized. I've never seen House, so he probably does know at least some light conversational Mandarin. But as an outsider looking in, what I described above could also explain this scene if he has no real conversational familiarity with Mandarin. I also don't know Mandarin. I could keep going, but given the character that represents House in the clips I've seen, the logistics I could provide as to how could and definitely would do a process similar to what I described perfectly fits his character. Again, all of this assumes he really has no competent conversational familiarity in Mandarin, of course
This dude is super smart, he could tell right through that girls lies right away, he can fluently speak Mandarin, and he could tell what both their problems were right away

I disagree, Vietnamese who watch Chinese historical movies can understand some of the words he was saying, and it was very easy to guess cuz of what she was saying after and her mom reactions.😂
Haven’t seen the show but enough clips to get what’s going on The daughter is after the pill and since her mother doesn’t speak English uses that her having the flu to try and get it that way. House (the doctor shown here) gives the prescription for both, but the daughter accidentally gives the mother the pill rather than the actual medicine she needs. In the second bit when they’ve came back the mothers “boobs have gotten bigger” due to her accidentally taking the pill. After realising this the daughter tells her mother in mandarin that House gave her the wrong medication, to which House responds that he knows mandarin and tells the mother that her daughter is pregnant Ensuing an argument Again I haven’t seen the show so if I’m wrong fully willing for anyone to correct me but I’ve seen this bit before
@@eonsinfinity534 That's kind of the joke I think you'll find. Cos there's always that 1 "paragraph guy" that has to explain EXACTLY what happens in a clip, beat for beat, like we can't see what's happened or are too stupid to understand what we just watched.

competent doctors like house are just as rare as super heroes in the real world. took me 20 years to get diagnosed with crohn's disease. everytime i went to the doctor as i child i was like "yea i have constant diarrhea and extreme abdominal pain" and the doctors were always like "yea you're just being a baby". finally as an adult, i do some googling and find out i have all the symptoms of crohn's disease. then i DEMAND my doctor test me for crohn's disease. sure enough i got diagnosed with crohn's disease. the fact is that most doctors are just normal people who think theyre smarter than everyone else because they took some medschool classes that they didnt even bother to pay attention to. house is literally one of those medical super heroes who unfortunately dont exist in the real world
When I developed pre-diabetes I actually left my first appointment crying. Not because of my diagnosis (admittedly though I got emotional when he said I don’t need to be dependent on insulin) but because I got a doctor who actually cared about helping me and preventing me from getting type 2 diabetes, instead of going “Well you’re gonna develop diabetes in 6 months, here’s your ozempic prescription, see ya again soon.”
d00d the lighting and music in s1e1 is SOOO era-appropriate. Overly dramatic medical drama stereotype on the pilot is just.. unacceptably acceptable as a relic of 20ish years ago.
I was 11 when they started airing House (2004). It was one of the cool shows along Prison Break around 08-09. I never watched it because I thought it was a pretentious hospital drama with a lot of medical terms I wouldn't understand. I'm 30 today and God damn have I been missing out. I finished a season within two days, and I can't stop watching.
I haven't seen House in ages (but I've seen a bunch of other Hugh Laurie stuff), but it's funny to see how he has this deadpan American accent but his mannerisms are over-the-top British.
This old Chinese lady really knows how to play a part. She was in Grey’s as well with the no-English situation and had a daughter come in and speak out for her because they had no green cards and therefore no insurance or something like that. It broke my heart. She knows how to play this character well
I like these little snippets in the show where House speaks some unpredictable foreign language out of the blue and everyone is like whaaat how did you do that?
