Yep. And this was at the time when MTV vids were all "experimental" with stop motion, computer animation, and other visual effects to take advantage of the then-new medium. It was a real change to have a simple video focusing on the artist and performance.

Sinead O'Connor shaved all her hair off after she heard her record label execs talking about how excited they were to market her because she was so beautiful, and as a musician with integrity she hated that. Little did she know that shaving her head would make her even more beautiful.

I remember finding the lion and the cobra at a Sam Goody at a mall. No fanfare, just that brilliant cover. I was still in highschool, maybe 14-15(?) Of course, back then your parents dropped you off for like 8 hours😂 I always beelined for the bookstore first and read for a couple hours and then straight over the music store. I listened to it on repeat for weeks and then it was in my permanent rotation. When "I do not have what I haven't got" came out, I had just broken up with my first boyfriend. It was exactly 7 hours and 15 days since the breakup and I was sleeping over at my bff's house. We put this song on and cried and sang along like we had ever known such torture and loss. Ugh...haven't thought about that in decades😥 What any of us non Debbie Gibson/Tiffany types would have done back then without Sinead and others. Every generation has them, I know. But there are some voices...*sigh* They just transport you. You become convinced that aliens and angels exist. They all seem to die too soon, as well.💔 Thank you, Sinead for sharing your gift, even when it was hard. Go be with your baby boy. You are loved.💙

Troy...another great one. Her first album was her before the industry really took their toll. She was truly the first in a sea of Tiffanys and Debbie Gibsons...Sinead taught us that we were worthy of more than our looks. She shaved her head just to throw a wrench in her publicity. She paved the way for Billie Eilish and so many other female artists. Her and Bjork have always been top of my music idols.💙

Yes...even as an adult, and a woman, I find her face mesmerizing...and just hauntingly beautiful. She was also incredibly brave-- for example, in Catholic Ireland, she was, I believe, the first to call out the priests and their child molestation. She did it years before it came to light generally, and was reviled for it. Talk about shooting the messenger...paid a huge price for it. She was never, however, one to back down from what she believed to be true. Her interpretation of the song is very different from Prince's-- so different, it can be hard to compare them, or chose a favorite. After you've watched Prince's rendition, I urge you-- STRONGLY!-- to watch Chris Cornell's. Having said versions are hard to compare or choose a favorite between Prince's and Sinead's, Chris Cornell's is my runaway favorite. It practically knocked me over when I first heard it, and I've seen it do the same to reactors hearing it for the first time.

No one knows Prince's version except huge Prince fans. His original version was composed for a band under his Paisley Park label called The Family. It was on their debut album in 1985, but that band never really went anywhere, so nobody had heard of it until Sinead O'Connor sang it in 1990. He did record it himself sometime in the late 80's, but it was never really Prince's song. Anyway... R.I.P. Sinead. You will be missed you rebel you. Thank you for being a piece of my late teens.

In memory of seeing a MTV interview. The reason for the closeup I do believe that the video is a recording of the song. She did this studio wise and it's a pre-release of the song to. Meaning it's not even lip-sync. The closeup is actually hiding the mic that we don't even know is there. Now I'm not sure if the vid was out with the song? Though I think this is the first time that a recording live was ever done as a professional video. It's indeed incredible!

The "Nothing Compares" documentary from last year is phenomenal and not at all what you'd expect from a music doc. It's really powerful, I can't recommend it enough.

The sharp pitch rises you refer to are an element of "keening" which is an Irish mourning type of singing. You hear it more, for example, in Zombie by the Cranberries when Dolores O'Riordan sings that song.

I was exactly the same age as u mate, and my thoughts as a 7 year old was why she was crying and being so surprised that she was crying 😢but I must have listened to this song 2-3 thousand times and it still effects my whole body, goose bumps the lot, and what an absolutely beautiful face, they actually was only going to use her face here and there throughout the video but decided to use it throughout the whole video, and she looks a million times better with no hair, if u see her with hair there’s no comparison. God rest her beautiful soul ❤❤❤❤

Like you, this is one of the first videos I remember watching and being completely mesmerized. I've always thought she was beautiful, but as you get older, you get the understanding from the whole song while as a kid, didn't quite understand it, but it held your attention.

Yes, that’s the point of this video and that’s what makes it so amazing and mesmerizing and impactful. It’s just her with that beautiful face and that black background. This song came out and I remember hearing it on the radio for the first time when I was driving in my car and I was like oh my God! I know Princes’ version because I was obsessed with prince growing up, but she does this song justice like no other can

I watched her tear up the pope’s photo on SNL and new her career was torpedoed. The went after her for telling the truth. She was a Artist and a honest woman

No autotune. Pure raw talent! She was amazing and spoke the truth! Her and Prince didn't get along, I heard she said something to the effect, " he should of thought about getting into a fight with an irishwoman" 😂. May she rest in peace ☘️💐🌹☘️

She was twenty when she recorded this song. Her mother had died when she was eighteen. (All the flowers in the backyard, Mama, all died when you went away). She asked Prince for his permission to record the song. He said no. So she did it anyway. The emotion shown on her face tells you that this experience was real for her, the reason for the camera focus on her face.

Genius is genius, whether it's "crazy" or not. As F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "Show me a hero, and I'll write you a tragedy".

You said "I'm going to let it cook" you said it so casually, a throw away line. Yo said it at exactly the moment you should do that. Also you instructed every reactor out there and you said it words I have never heard before. The one thing I learned from this reaction is I need to watch other reactions you have done. From now on, you ca put me in the 'subscibed' column.

To put things into perspective, even though Prince wrote this song for his group The Family, when Sinead sang it, she sang hit with her mother in mind. She had such an abusive child hood, apparently her mother used to lock her in the garden and not let her indoors all night long!

An impressive reaction!! But she has other songs, don't forget "Fire On Babylon" (great freaky music video about child abuse) and "No Man's Woman".
