@@sarahmurphy8030it's actually from behind the scenes of the Catherine Tate show, during break he was given the wrong sandwich as to which he said 'this is not my sandwich' and she included it in the scene hence why he nearly broke character
There was a newspaper story about a translator in Dover, in England, the main ferry port to France, about a decade back. An elderly German visitor had ended up in the town court for some crime, and it became very quickly apparent that he spoke little or no English. The judge asked if anyone in the public gallery spoke German. A young guy said he did, and was brought to the front of the court. The judge asked the 'translator' to first ask the defendant his name. "Vot iss your name, schweine!" was the shouted response. The 'translator' was sentenced to a few days in prison for contempt of court, and the case was adjourned until a proper translator could be located.
One day in spain we asked a policemen directions and he was trying too tell us to walk towards a company building called CCCB -- but in spanish 'theh-theh-theh-beh' and he described the route two or three times -- knowing this sketch we almost wet ourselves with laughter!
She does an excellent disinterested teenager "Lauren", but her "Nan" character is hilariously offensive. My fave sketches with Nan are ugly baby or at the doctors surgery.
Apparently this took many takes because the Chinese lady kept collapsing in laughter. Catherine does do an American character BTW - Search 'Valley Girl'
@votejj so what happens to people like me, and everybody I know, who laugh with and at other races? All my white friends make jokes about me, and me and my friends do the same to them. Tge only people I see taking offence are people with a political agenda, or virtue signalling white people. Of course we don't want racism, but we also want people to be able to make TV like this, in which many races or nationalities are teased. In fact, in this clip it is the British who are teased the most. Catherine Tate takes the Mickey out of how sure the interpretor is of her skills, while making a massive fool of herself. If that were a real situation, everybody in the room would have laughed at her. You couldn't make tv like this today, though, and that is why tv is so shit. Funny stuff is always controversial.
The joke is on the Catherine Tate "English" character here and not the foreign representatives. Her characterisations of their languages could be taken as offensive, but they are so ludicrous that the joke is on here and not them or their cultures and this is why it's so funny, and it is hilarious!!! You should check out a lot more of her including her character Lauren and the sketch done for Comic Relief Red Nose Day with the then Prime Minister Tony Blair. It is just hilarious!!! As is the one with David Tennant, who was Doctor Who at the time. Old Nan is great as well!!!
@@purdy9431 Something missing when watching this sketch on its own is the background of Tate's character. In each episode she claimed to be able to do a particular job only to mess it up. This sketch was the icing on the cake.
"I did TEFL in my gap year" refers to a course popular with students prior to travelling before they start Uni, as they can earn income whilst travelling; Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
Daniel knows his Spanish ! I lived in Spain and just across the border for 30 years. Ththththththe The Chinese woman caused so many re-takes because she kept laughing so much. :) Brilliant stuff.
Don't forget Amy and martha.thry all brought something different it's hard to pick which was best going by how upsetting it was in there last scene I'd have to say 1.rose 2.amy 3=clara,Donna 4.martha.
Catherine Tate - offensive Nan, Ultra posh family, Derek the closet gay, Proud Irish mum of gay son, Lauren the school girl who isn't bothered and so many more.
Brilliant reaction guys, so glad you enjoyed it! Anything with Catherine Tate's character Nan is hilarious. Nan - ugly baby and Nan- eating disorder and window cleaner are both worth a look.
You can't blame someone for having a laugh and no hurt is meant. Or perhaps I'm wrong. You brothers can laugh at me and you dig as deep as you can, but so long as there is no spite , I listen and laugh with you. Kind regards Martin.
This was made several years ago ,before political correctness took over.It should be treasured.Even these guys seemed almost afraid to laugh ,possibly worried about a backlash from some subscribers Thank God for sketches like this, to remind us of when great humour was allowed to be made on television.
Her offensive translator was not the only offensive sketch with the character, Helen. The idea is that the character says yes to anything to impress, although she has no skills. Just to give you context if you didn't know or wanted it. Everyone who is old enough to remember this sketch from the first time around couldn't believe it, no one had done a sketch like this before, I think it caught us off guard.
I have seen reactions to this vid from pretty much all the cultures sat at that table on RU-vid and they all think its hilarious. In fact the Japanese actress kept bursting into fits of laughter when her turn came up which apparently took many takes .. Katherine almost loses it at the end of that one also if you look closely. Simple fact is no one is offended as its not meant to be offensive .. If you know the character she is an office girl that thinks she can do anything and volunteers for all sorts which never ends well :)
When I was in Scotland, a Nigerian professor played this for us as an icebreaker, and the few Indian students started talking like that Indian translation.
Ye this kinda shit sadly isn’t allowed on TV anymore 😂 definitely my favourite Catherine Tate sketch ever. Gets me every time, her show was fantastic 😂
I'm leaving a comment before watching. Just watched u react to Catherine Tate's Nan character and both of you reacted with genuine laughter, which makes me look forward to watching this one. I have a feeling you two are gonna piss yourselves 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You guys need to get onto Micky Flanagan, a few good places to start would be ‘lazy French’ , ‘Americans just don’t get it’, ‘the shits abroad’ and ‘peeping’
ANOTHER SIMILAR SKIT IS HARRY AND PAUL SHOW, THE FOOTBALL MANAGER WHO TALKS TO ALL HIS TEAM AT HALF TIME IN 11 LANGUAGES, BRILLIANTLY FUNNY, PLEASE TRY GUYS
The catherine tait show was a great watch ! You guys have to check out her other characters like Lauren or Nan love you guys keep it up ! From the uk !
This was the last era, that was ALMOST, free of WOKE cobbler's (shite) Catherine and all the performer's you are enjoying on YT, are virtually barred from so-called 'Prime-Time' TV. If they have work, at all, it's (sadly, being associated with mindless piss-poor so-called 'Game / Quiz shows''. The future of Comedy, lies in the past.
The African man had had lunch with Catharine before the sketch, and he had said "This is not my sandwich", so she put it into the sketch without telling him trying to make him laugh. You can see he turns his head smiling trying to keep a straight face.
FYI, It's believed one of the kings of Spain, Ferdinand 13th, had a lisp and all the court started to lisp in deference. Apparently the king didn't think they were sending him up and so it continued. Catherine Tate is a very clever, funny lady. 😄
I feel like it's an American thing, to analyze humour to a point where it stops becoming funny. Just laugh at the funny thing and carry on with your day!😅
Apparently they had all had lunch together during rehearsals, and the last guy on receiving his order was heard to say "this is not my sandwich" he did really well not to laugh
The only thing wrong with this video is that it is called "offensive". There is nothing offensive in this video. That is how other people talk. This sketch is not being offensive to anyone but the English. It's highlighting how narrow minded the Catherine character is and we're laughing at her stupidity. We're not laughing or making fun of any culture... It's really fooking hard to explain British humour.. Snow flakes will always cry about stuff the do not quite understand. The joke is that she's th........ You know what. If you don't understand it then why should I explain it?...
@@pahema472 I see.... lol... And a cheers to you, too. All the way from Northern England ,where the weather is considered good if there is only slight rain and the temp is above 12C... *clinks glass with you*.
Fantasic show, she'd never get away with half her sketches on the BBC nowadays but I don't remember anyone being overly offended at the time (even the actress playing the chinese lady in this sketch apparently struggled to get through the takes without laughing!)
That's because it's the translator who's the butt of the joke, not the people of different nationalities. That's the difference between an offensive joke and a funny joke about something offensive.
Damn! I love Catherine Tate. No way would she get away with this kind of Comedy, in 2021. Thank god I was born in the 70s, where nobody got offended. Then came the 80s, 90s & then came the 21st century, where everyone gets offended. You can't sneeze without someone looking at you weird. 🤧
Catherine Tate used to have her own TV series years ago. This is really old. She has so many characters. She is a comedy genius. Check out her other stuff
