Style, Minimalism, Apartment Decor, Decluttering, Simple Living, Productivity, Organization, Clean Home, Wellness, Recovery, Capsule Wardrobe
This week's video on the Carla project is a declutter with friends episode. We are decluttering and organizing a super cluttered living room. My friend has lived in this apartment for nearly 15 years. Decluttering a small apartment is not easy. Especially if you struggle with feeling attached to items and feeling sentimental about the things in your home. But little by little you can start to make a change. Decluttering first and then organizing! You can't organize your way out of a cluttered home. Today's video will inspire you to declutter and organize your small apartment or motivate you to declutter and organize your living room space.

Erica is the funniest Declutter with Friends FRIEND who doesn’t want to Declutter 😂😅I actually think getting her a storage unit could be the gateway to her clearing out her space. Let us know your thoughts and thanks Erica for opening up your home 🏡 ❤ (like the video if you want us to make part two)

A storage unit would only solve her problem if she stops buying...that is not going to happen. She needs someone to help her deal with the issues behind the clutter

I think getting a storage space has potential to be the pathway to success for Erica if she makes the commitment to not filling the space created by moving the items currently in her home to the storage unit. It could be highly motivating if some items can be removed in such a way that Erica will have a room or even part of a room that is orderly and calming. She will however need to make a solemn promise that existing clutter in other parts of her home will not migrate into the newly cleared space and no new items will be introduced into the cleared area. Please film a part 2 to this video. I enjoy your videos very much!

This is because her Mom died....at least in part. When I am dealing with this situation I go mystical and burn sage. I was working with someone who had months to live and we got rid of 1 glass milk bottle that had a $1 deposit. I gave her the dollar. You can't convince these people it has to come from within. You handled this beautifully!

@SarahAnew

I personally don’t think she’s a hoarder. She may have hoarding tendencies, but that doesn’t mean she has a disorder. She’s a creative person, too, so she may see thing as having value in a way that others don’t. And it could also be attention span and spending habits too. I totally relate to her and I have hoarded (bought a lot of things I didn’t have places for and have attachment to) when I was going through a difficult time in my life. I don’t think being a hoarder makes you an unacceptable person or anything either. I just want to say that. Hoarding is a mental disorder that is often brought on by coping with trauma. Even if that’s not the case, some people are more attached to their belongings and have a more difficult time letting go. It’s a process. You have to build a muscle for it when it doesn’t come naturally to you.

@liisaking1247
@liisaking1247 Год назад
@@theloveyourfacegal2773 we would really need to see how Erica does over time in an adequately sized space in order to determine whether or not she's hoarding. She has so little space that she may just get frustrated and overwhelmed and not deal with things she is willing to get rid of. I deal with small space living and people with neurodivergence, so I'm familiar with how many people get overwhelmed or depressed and feel like nothing they do makes a difference, so why try? (She may also deal with object permanence issues, which can contribute to a lot of forgotten items of varying importance levels ending up mixed together.) Erica needs to see that what she does *is* making it better and she's not just shuffling stuff from A to B and back to A.

So realistic...not every declutter goes smoothly or quickly. Part 2 please! I'm against paying for storage personally, unless it's for a specific time frame such as cleaning out a parents home that you need to move quickly but will go through later ... I'd love to see a part two. You and Erica definitely made progress. I think it's a good sign she maintained the kitchen. I vote no on the separate storage unit. It'll just become an extra recurring expense and a place where she dumps things and forgets about them. My vote is for several rounds of decluttering. Each pass she'll get rid of more stuff. She won't ever be a minimalist, but I can she her becoming more simplified and organized. Plus, maybe more videos for us? 😂 Thank you for sharing your home, Erica!

Yeah, I agree that storage spaces are enablers and tend to be a waste of money, especially to people who struggle with clutter and parting with things. Paying rent to keep things in storage could be replaced with selling those items and/or donating them or recycling them. A monthly decluttering session where she gets rid of 30 or more items might feel less overwhelming than trying to do it all in one take. As always, great work getting things in order. 🥰#FriendsDontLetFriendsLiveInClutter #MentalHealth #ClearClutterClearYourMind❤

She’s doing great! Baby steps are fine! Some people need a little more time to declutter. I would not recommend a storage unit - that is just moving the problem from one spot to another. The problem isn’t the stuff, it’s the inability to get rid of anything. If she doesn’t learn that skill, her home will just be full of junk again in a very short time.

As someone who has helped my dad declutter a 4 bedroom home, one strategy that helped was sorting items by category, and then asking “how many ___ do you think you need?” After he came up with a number, I would have him picked out that many of his favorites from the pile and then move on. For hoarders it’s especially hard to pick up and make a decision about every single item and once they’re holding it they will often find a reason why they need to keep it. Mind you, he was only open to decluttering because he had to sell the home and had a deadline. Good luck with your mom! I know the struggle.

Maybe I'll plan to do that in the future. Our last thing we decluttered was books which I donated. I sorted out over 300 and my husband around 250. We have a lot of bookshelves. This is an episode of hoarders for real! Don’t buy a storage unit!!! She’ll just be paying for storage without any cleaning! And it’s going to add to the sadness and anxiety and anger when she has spent the money AND doesn’t have a place for her things. Plus when she can’t see it she will just buy multiples of what’s in storage. Take it from me EVERY ONE of my family members does this me included. We just can’t help it. It takes a real commitment (and doing the de clutter ourselves) to change things.

I remember watching a show in the early 2000s (maybe it was called clean house) where they cleaned out and organized hoarder level houses. Sometimes they would clear out an entire room by emptying it in the front yard. Then they would put the room back together with only a reasonable amount of furniture and decor. Sometimes that was the push the people needed to see what their house could really be like without the extra stuff. Maybe a storage unit could help with this realization. Or it could also be used as a time limit. For example if I don’t need to get something out of the unit in the next 6 months I don’t need it and it has to go. But it could also be a crutch to acquire more stuff. Time will tell.

I'd so give her a long hug. #understanding #love

@@TheCarlaProject What if you say that after the unit is is filled up, that if it's all still there in a 1/2 a year without being touched, YOU may dispose of the contents without her re-examining everything. We all know the only reason she says she wants stuff is because it's in front of her, but if she doesn't see it once it's in the unit, it wont be stressful. I've thought of doing this for myself, because once I SEE something the "what if" bells start chiming in that I'll need it. But if it's just magically gone, I'd never think about that stuff again honestly.

I understand her sooo bad. I was like her! I'm a minimalist now but I know how she feels. The attachment to things is real and it takes a lot of training and determintation to be able to let go. I'm a firm believer it is only through your own experience that you can overcome the attachment to things. Once you start little by little letting go, you start feeling lighter and it's nice. Then you can confirm, with your own experience that you are able to survive without that sticker or the Arugula recipe. Not only that, you start to feel better for letting it go because you feel lighter and you start to trust yourself more to make decisions to let go of more and more things. I love it but it is something that did not happen overnight for me.

I have a few friends like this. They want to organize their homes, admit how dirty their homes are, but there is ALWAYS an excuse as to why they can't start. They don't want anyone to see their home, they have to make sure they have the supplies first. They have to clear this one thing first, etc etc. Two of us offered to help her declutter, and my friend just stopped mentioning wanting to clean her place, so we stopped offering to do it. You can't help people who don't want to change. All we can do is offer to be there for them if they choose to accept your help.
@mrandisg
@mrandisg Год назад
I'm sorry, but the way you worded this triggered me. It's not that they "don't want to change." The whole reason they're asking for help is they DO want to change. But it is extremely hard to admit you even have the issue in the first place. It's humiliating. Your friend probably won't ask for help again because she was most likely shamed and judged for having a messy home to begin with. No one wants a judgmental person to "help" them do anything. That's not helping, that's making the situation worse. I speak from personal experience. So, instead of concluding she "doesn't want" help, I strongly suggest LISTENING to her and getting to the root of the issue. Your friend may need therapy to help her get thru whatever's going on. At the very least, she needs someone who will listen to her with ZERO judgment. If you can't do that, then no amount of offering to help will do any good. Trust me, I know.
@thegazetteyt
@thegazetteyt Год назад
@@mrandisg I'm not sorry. I meant don't want to change. Not my problem that what I said triggered you. Saying something is different than putting in effort, not matter the opportunity. You can say you want to change all you like, but if you don't put in intent, it's lip service. You seem to be more concerned with tone policing me than listing to what I'm saying. Me sugar coating it is not going to coax anyone into putting in the work. I have been that person and I have been on the receiving end of that person. Effort is part of the process, and it is no one's obligation to handhold someone and force them to do something they haven't admitted to themselves they truly want to do. NO ONE has that type of control over anyone.
@mrandisg
@mrandisg Год назад
@@thegazetteyt I understand, and I’m sorry for attacking like that. I shouldn’t have done that. You’re right, me getting triggered is not your fault. It’s mine. It’s just that I’ve been misunderstood and misjudged by people so much over the course of my life that when I think someone else is being judged unfairly, I feel the need to defend them. But yeah, I definitely overreacted, so I apologize.
@thegazetteyt
@thegazetteyt Год назад
@@mrandisg I hear you. I've been on that side of the judging as well. One thing Ive learned from it from getting older is don't give a s*it about what others think of you. Don't give them that power. It's too draining. Once you learn that (and that can be a hard lesson to learn) you will be liberated to go and do and experience what you want :)

I think a storage unit is a waste of money. Even at 100. dollars a month. Twelve hundred a year. She could likely replace all that stuff she wants to store for less money than she would spend on storage. Some of us really have to take baby steps. It’s ok to go slowly. You’re such a great friend to help her and it looks like fun was had all around.

Please make a part 2. Letting go of items can be hard but if you want change to last and take place Erica has to be ready. If she hasn't physically gone through each item clutter will continue to happen. Once she sees her home opening up, she will have more motivation and begin to declutter more. Decluttering is not a one and done, its a process that must be done continuously and consistently. Thanks for having patience with Erica.

An alternative to getting a storage space might be to rent a co-working space to achieve separation between work life and home life. Erica would however need to be vigilant about not introducing clutter into her dedicated work space or the newly cleared space at home.

I like to keep my appliance instructions and warranty papers so I just combine them all into one folder for the whole house and label it. I put it in the living room and showed everyone where it was so now if we need the info it's put away and accessible. We've used it several times! I also think putting the magazines into a combined pile will show her how many she actually has and help her realize she needs to get rid of some. Especially because most of that info can be found online

As a professional organizer, I am NOT a fan of renting storage units, unless it is temporary (eg. less than 6 months). Your friend needs a "vision" for her life, which will generate her WHY. Why she is decluttering. Does she see this as her "forever" home? Or at least her permanent home because this is not a temporary situation? Then she needs to declutter enough to make small space living realistic. She needs to declutter to JUST what she needs NOW. She has a lot of "stuck in the past" clutter, as well as "no vision for the future" clutter. Be ruthless and let's see a part 2.

After the divorce there were car accidents, surgeries and multiple moves to find suitable housing. Boxes still packed from 4 yrs previously. Layers is the key!!! Eventually it gets better!

Yup there’s an inescapable rule: stuff is infinite and space is finite. In theory I would say storage space is a bad idea but storing stuff is a good way to unattach. I’ve had boxes from a move 5 years ago that haven’t been unpacked. It’s pretty hard to justify keeping what’s in them. My hat is off to your friend for sharing the experience that many of us have but won’t admit to.

Watching this video I thought of the Hoarder's Heart channel. She used to have a completely hoarded house, and over years of working through her hoarding, she now has gone from a level 4 hoarder to a level 1 or 2 hoarder. I don't think Erica is a full hoarder, but some of those reactions seemed familiar to what Ms Heart talks about in her videos. Might be worth a watch to get her perspective and see how she processes letting go of things!

Definitely Part 2!! It's encouraging that Erica is continuing to declutter herself. But I would NOT recommend a storage facility, as it simply encourages hoarding behaviour. At some point a person needs to face their stuff (i.e., demons). Usually a lot of discomfort is required to trigger the decision for behaviour change.

Carla, I commend YOU for your HARD work abd EFFORT! PLEASE convince her to get a storage space AND get some sort of theraputical assistance e.g. be part of a decluttering group or something where she can talk about WHY is she EMOTIONALLY attached to EVERY think. If she can get to the root of it she can derach AND then start letting go of things! To every cause there is a root and she needs outside assistance to what you can provide. A band aid is only a tempoary cover to her wound, she has something deep rooted that might resolve this. I speak as a family member who like you assisted someone with this type of issue. Cheers and good luck!

Erica seems like a good candidate for Dana K. White’s decluttering method! She has a RU-vid, podcast, books! For example for things like those magazines she does this thing called the container concept where you select the container or space where magazines will be stored, fill it with your favorites, then once it’s full that’s all you keep! Makes the container the “bad guy” and reduces the amount of bargaining between helper (you) and space owner (Erica) by physically showing them the limits of their space. Also the first step of her method is to remove trash so y’all are making great progress even if it’s frustrating! Her method is really great for creatives like Erica who have piles and insist they know what all’s in them 😂 and really, really helpful for overwhelming spaces that feel impossible

It helped to prioritize the few things that were really meaningful and pass on the rest. I decluttered when I was packing for my house renovation, there will be another ruthless decluttering as I unpack. Looking forward to the segment in this sequence!

Yes, Part 2! I would rather she not throw her money away, storing things she never uses. Maybe she could use the money she would spend on storage fees, instead on therapy, to get to the bottom of why she holds on to things. My mom passed, plus I have no children, so I can relate with losing a parent. All this stuff keeps people and future relationships at bay. She’s so friendly, so that seems to be a paradox worth exploring.💞

I paid for one for a year after my mom died and then couldnt tell you anything that was in it except for the big items (couches, dining table, etc) she needs to let go of items she isnt using now (the stools) and items she hasnt used in the past 6 months. At first I was like "OMG! how can she have all that stuff crammed in her apartment?" but then I have to remember that decluttering isn't the same for everyone. For some just the thought of having to go through belongings and not knowing where to start can be very difficult. I started on my journey to minimalism before I even knew what it was after working in a retail store. It took me some time to pare down my belongings. I had a challenge letting go of some things in the first year and even in the second year.

I'm really glad you posted this video! I think it will help a lot of people who want to declutter but have difficulty letting things go! It's not a perfect process, but I loved that she continued to work on it after your initial help. A storage unit would be great because I think she'll get to experience what a clutter-free home feels and looks like. Then maybe after some time passes she'll be able to part with those items because she'll realize she never needed or cared all that much about them.
